Are tamaskans aggressive? My dad is obsessed with dogs that look like wolves so I thought that a tamaskan would be perfect for him. And also can tamaskans be trained to be a guard dog?
@LazyBootsFarm
@LazyBootsFarm 4 года назад
Tams aren't usually aggressive, but as with similar dogs, they can be defensive to things they don't know if they aren't properly socialized as a puppy. So as a blanket statement, I would say no they aren't, as they'll not ever go looking for a fight. As guard dogs, they're biggish and scary when they bark, but I wouldn't expect them to be good guard dogs, though they will protect anyone they've bonded with. From what I've been told, they don't have the same liking to bite work like a German Shepherd tends to have, and the husky side makes them more interested in doing their own thing or playing, rather than guarding something.

They're low on the aggression scale, have a high prey drive so socialize them early to children and small animals so you don't have a mishap, and no they wouldn't make good guard dogs. They really take after husky types.

I had never heard of the Littlest Hobo before, but I just looked it up and there are quite a few similarities!
@lunamaria1048

Littlest Hobo was a Canadian show and the dogs real name was London.. I am Japanese born but been in Canada since my youth and that was my first favorite western show lol.. London is STILL by far the most beautiful dog I have ever seen, so my saying this dog looks like London is a HUGE compliment..I have wanted a dog that looks like London for my entire life, and trying to follow rumors that London's lineage is still being bred, but am also looking for an alternative in a breed that looks like him, just in case, and I found it in the form of the Tamascan in this video lol. I do a lot of remote overland touring expeditions.. My family dog i grew up with is over 108 dog years old and back with my parents because he needs more care than I can give with my busy career, so I just want a little brother for him because he loves puppies lol and actually tries to run and play with them lol, as well as I want a travel companion.. Our other family dog past away last October and he has been very depressed.. He needs a new pal lol Thanks!!

Well thank you! London is a very pretty dog and I agree that Thorin does look like him! I did a bit of research into London and I keep seeing that he is supposedly fully German Shepherd. He really doesn't look like that to me, though. I would say that for looks, Tamaskans are going to be right up that alley! You should certainly look into them and see if the temperament and such is also good for you. There is a ton of information on Tams on our website at AvalonTamaskan.com if you're interested in looking more into them!
@lunamaria1048
@lunamaria1048 4 года назад
The breeder kept his lineage a secret so they wouldn't be exploited.. As a child I always thought London was a Shepherd/Husky mix, but Google says he wasn't.. His relatives were even used as doggy stunt doubles for the show lol... My father told me that Shepherds were crossed with wolves awhile back, so maybe London was from that line that was crossed with wolves countless dog generations ago so still held wolf physiology that todays common German Shepherds lines do not, to give that distinct color like there is something like wolf or husky down the line.. Just a theory.... I know they were bred for some time after the show.. I hope they are still around... Do you know how much Tamascans are?... OH! I just see the link in your comment now that I put my glasses on lol.. I will check it out now! Lol thanks

Are you in the U.S? I am amazed with this breed and I’m looking for a breeder . We already have a Aussie who’s extremely friendly but meet need a friend !

We are! However, both our Tams came from over seas, so don't limit yourself in applying just in the US. Check out the Tamaskan Dog Register (pretty sure a quick Google search will get you there), and you'll find all the active breeders!

Hi! I’m looking to buy a tamaskan puppy, and was wondering if you had any recommendations for breeders etc? I love the breed, and have the time right now to add another member of the family
@LazyBootsFarm
@LazyBootsFarm 6 лет назад
Nightsong22 of course! There is a list of TDR breeders at tamaskandogregister.org/breedermap.php we would recommend any of the breeders found there. Athena and Thorin are from Europe (you can learn more about them specifically on our website, avalontamaskan.com or if you would like to ask more questions, send us an email and we're happy to help, avalontamaskan@gmail.com)!

I'm in the US and me and my boyfriend were looking for dogs that we could bring into the family when we move into a house. We already have an Australian Shepard. He wanted a German Shepard at first but we read that they really don't get along with other dogs. So I found the Tamaskan and we read they are gentle, sweet and get along with almost anything, is this true? We really want one, since they seem like the perfect dog for our family.

Hi Paige! Yes, Tamaskans are great with other dogs (they love to be part of a pack). They can be wonderful family dogs as well, though because of their northern breed ancestry (siberains, malamutes, etc) they can be a bit aloof so it really come down to making sure young pups are properly socialized! One of our tams didnt meet children until 3 months old and you can definitely tell he is weary around them. But our other was raised by the breeder around kids and she absolutely adores kids and does extremely well with them. They are truly great companion and family dogs!

@@LazyBootsFarm Awesome! We plan on getting one from a breeder. We don't worry about Socializing because we take our dogs to the dog park all the time! Our aussie has learned to love other dogs and even children because of it! Thanks for the information!

@@MamaDrunkie very glad to hear it! My last suggestion for you, then, is start looking and applying now, as it can take a while with waitlists and waiting for heat cycles!

So you got bitten?
@LazyBootsFarm
@LazyBootsFarm 5 лет назад
There was no biting, no worries. When I showed my hand, it was the juices I had on it from making the duck that Thorin wanted! Thorin is super gentle even taking treats and whatnot and will sooner slobber all over a hand feeding him than bite it!
@TCM215
@TCM215 5 лет назад
@@LazyBootsFarm Yep ok I did kinda think that was a bit of a long shot that you got bitten. That breed is my next dog:) I had a blue healer as my last dog. Would you suggest getting two? and if so would it need to be another Tamaskan? I am thinking another blue healer and a Tamaskan or Husky and Tamaskan. There are only two breeders that I am aware of though in Australia and they are interstate.
@LazyBootsFarm
@LazyBootsFarm 5 лет назад
@@TCM215 blue healers would be a great fit! If you are home to be around your dog almost 100% of the time, you could get away with just one, but they are very social dogs, so I would urge you to get a second dog. While we can't directly get you a dog, shoot us an email at Avalontamaskan@gmail.com! We have plenty of info to help you out and a contact in Australia that would be extremely helpful for you with the laws there. Also, keep in mind that getting a tam is a long application process, so start early!

Way to not reinforce the good behavior and just frustrate your excellent doggos by telling them "no" repeatedly and confusing the shit out of them "thomas"
@LazyBootsFarm
@LazyBootsFarm Год назад
You want me to have given them the duck when they were calm? Sometimes there is no *food* reward, there is only listening. That's part of positive reinforcement training. It wasn't even mildly confusing to Thorin, he knew exactly what was right and wrong; if he hadn't, he would have just taken the duck.
