These Top 5 tips to Long Distance Walking or Thru Hiking will help you to complete your goal and finish your journey.
I have walked over 25 long distance routes throughout the UK, Germany, France and Spain, which have included walking 14 of the 16 National Footpaths of England and Wales and 4 in Scotland, I also have walked the Pennine Way back to back over 27 days (268 miles each way).
Throughout completing all these trails I have realised the best tips to successfully completing a trail which I can pass on to you so you can also succeed and long forward to your next long distance path where ever that maybe?

Great tips Andy. Tip number one resonates with me. As I’m planning to stay in B&B’s on the Pennine Way, it’s such a risk not booking them in advance as some places have very limited accommodation options, but you’re spot on that if you book everything in advance then you’re committed to having to take on the planned mileage each day.
@ExpeditionHiker
@ExpeditionHiker 3 года назад
You can book 2 or 3 days before when you know you will make distance targets, but anything more can cost you if you don't make the distance in time, if camping generally if backpacking a lot of sites will let you on even if the site is full as they know you have no alternative as no car if walking and if no other campsite near by (well that goes for those that don't want to wild camp) can you do the Pennine Way by B&B's or is the distances to far in between each B&B? I would take a shelter in case of problems.

i used to ride trains freight trains and that involves sometimes walking 20 30miles a day,,, the way i do things cause i chose destinations tracks dont go.. so hiking with a 50 pound pack 8-13 hours a day really tests ones build... one of the problems i have had is walking tensely and hurting my hip {just soreness } but when that happens i rest and change my style of walking and engage my core more.but concious walking and sheer effort of hiking with that big of a pack seem to make everything a bit sore until im a week or so in.

I want to do a walk of 500 km (310 miles). But i have never done a long distance walk yet. My plan was to walk 10 - 15 km a day (6 - 9 miles) because im no exspert. And if i can walk more than that then i can always add some km on the way. I want to do this as soon as im done with school so that i can take all the time i need. For sleeping places i use a site where you can sleep in people's houses for a night for cheap. Theyre are so many locations on the site that i wont have to push myself to walk another city further. This way i dont need to take that much with me as in these houses i could charge my phone and have blankeds and everything. But yes after watching this it does sound stupid of me to not try out shorter walks before. So that will be on my planning now

How do you decide on the exact route? I have something similar in mind but it seems to be a bit dangerous to walk along highways like Google maps tell you to, and to walk across the fields around them sounds kind of awkward. Is that really the way to do it though?

Hi Andy a very interesting & informative video 👏 , I have been researching long distance walking training videos & pleased to hear that you have a army background, I am initially thinking of retracing my father’s footsteps for a Charity walk covering around 140 miles that his regiment undertook on a route march from Northumberland to Yorkshire back in 1941/2 before he went off to India & Burma, so how should I prepare for such an expedition at the age of 72 ? Thanks Keith

Thanks for the reply Andy so I play 18 holes of ⛳️ each week at these times, it will be on A/B roads etc similar to the route march taken from the Otterburn Camp in Northumberland to Thorne in Yorkshire , am thinking of doing the walk in the Autumn after a couple of months training ? & I plan to use B & B, doing a reccie later this month to see if it’s realistic for starters thanks Keith

@elliottwright3772
@elliottwright3772 2 года назад
12 miles or 12 hour walk? 12 hours continuous walking will take its toll on anyone - it's not something you should be doing, unless you've got some one-off charity challenge sorted. Plenty of factors to explore. Build up your feet strength with daily shorter walks. Don't keep trying to reach that end goal every time!
@michaelkores6860
@michaelkores6860 2 года назад
@@elliottwright3772 I would say never underestimate two very important factors: the weight of your backpack and the weather (heat/humidity). Without bachpack and perfect weather I would say 12 hours walking on one day is possible if the path is comfortable.

In 4 weeks I’m doing my first long distance hike the Yorkshire wolds way over 4-5 days, would you recommend doing practice hikes of around 15-20miles with a heavier backpack than will be used on the actual trail to try and build yourself up faster so it’s easier on the day? (We arnt the fittest lads but it’s for charity so failure isn’t an option)
@ExpeditionHiker
@ExpeditionHiker 5 месяцев назад
It can help to do practise walks carrying the weight you would on the Yorkshire wolds, I wouldn't carry anything extra as you won't find any benefit or it be any easier if only 4 weeks before the trail, get use to the weight abd the rucksack you are using, how far are you thinking of walking per day on the trail? As I say in the video build up day by day don't just plan day 1 to do the same as the last day, also try a 2 day, with full kit, a practise run - dial in your kit, don't take to much clothing but enough to be comfortable, practise putting up tent straight out of your pack, also try at dusk when getting darker, or even at night by headlamp light, plan where you can get water/food along the way so not carrying to much at one time, I hope that helps? Anymore questions?

@ExpeditionHiker

Is this a multi day hike of 9 hours a day or a day walk? It depends on the season, amount of light, what footwear you have, boots/trail runners, socks - amount of gear carrying, if you haven't walked that far I would suggest take your time, take trekking poles, take breaks, have plenty of snacks/fluids

How often do you take a break ? I mean after how many km's of non stop walking you'd take a break and how long these breaks are ?
@ExpeditionHiker
@ExpeditionHiker Год назад
I generally do not stop for breaks along the way over a day, but do stop to film locations and create the video, so in a way I would probably consider that a break. I eat as I walk, snacks/water in reachable pockets so I don't need to take off my pack. but having breaks works for most people, if think about 2 to 3 breaks over the day, mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon, 20 minutes 'ish per break - if feet are feeling tired, maybe take your footwear off let your feet air out or maybe a couple of stretches so you don't get to tight throughout the day and fatigue

@ExpeditionHiker
@ExpeditionHiker Год назад
@@SS-sg4eg stretching before the start of each day will help, build strength gradually - weight in pack are you taking to much kit that will cause pain, (I might do a short video on putting on a pack properly as can make a big difference) if carrying kit wrongly you will feel in in back, shoulders, neck and upper legs. electrolytes and drink plenty of water - they will help with salts to stop cramps and pains, good innersoles in footwear helps with fatigue
