Long Exposures: Why I don't bother...

Long exposures and outdoor photography go hand-in-hand, although not for me, I don't really like them. In this video I ramble around one of the world's most famous waterfalls - Skogafoss in Iceland - to explain why.
Also a huge thank you to Lumix for sponsoring this video. I love their equipment and you can find it all here: www.panasonic....

If you would like a print of any photo that appears in one of my videos, please email hello@jamespopsys.com with a screenshot of the image you would like, and the size you would like (A4 = £25 or A3 = £40). These prints are signed but not numbered. Thanks for your support :)
Thank you :)

I always wonder why there is not some warning on the long exposure waterfall shots that states that Acme chemical had a major processing problem at there upstream plant. It takes more skill to capture the real movement/power of the water.

long exposures have their place, there are also happy mediums between a silky long exposure and a choppy capture with a fast shutter.
@HarryBradbury

Agree and disagree. Depends on the water; with a powerful water source such as the waterfall in your video above, I agree, the long exposure looked odd. However on some of the little peaceful streams (especially in the Brecon Beacons), a long exposure works perfectly to enhance the quiet, dreamy effect that you get when you're actually there. All about judging the scene I suppose!

totally agree, if its a good waterfall that interesting when caught sharp then great but I always smooth out the sea if its not showing any great waves as I find it more interesting. Cant just tar it all with one brush.

I agree. It is a nice tool, but it needs to fit the rest of the image, and should not be an automatic reflex when seeing moving water or clouds.

3:52 AT LAST - Thank you soooo much James, why should everyone have to follow everyone else's photo styles is beyond me and the single pet hate I have is long exposure, your eyes don't see milky waterfalls or milky shorelines, so why would you want to take a photo like that is beyond me. Sometimes you just want to take a photo to remember the scene, in the exact detail that drove you to spend the time to take that photo, the beauty of the scene, without blurring it or spoiling it. 👌🏻
@benharris3949
@benharris3949 5 лет назад
Congrats on the sponsorship, that’s a great partnership. Sometimes I like stopping the motion of the water and capturing the drama, but if the light is soft and it’s already an ethereal scene, I feel like a longer exposure adds to what my mind is already experiencing.

Congratulations on the Lumix sponsorship! Can’t think of a better match than to be sponsored by a company behind equipment you’re already using and fond of! Very interesting video topic, too. I think you’ve made a great point regarding a powerful waterfall and how that element is completely lost with a long exposure. Conversely, reflecting on your point, I think it can add something to a calm stream or as a technique to obtain more reflection in a lake. I like the idea of asking myself, before taking the photo, if a given amount of blur from shutter speed will add to or detract from the story. Also great point on how in excess it very quickly identifies a photograph as a product of photography technique and how that may influence the viewer’s experience.

Couldn't agree more about long exposures with water. I've seen so many other channels where they get all excited about crashing waves for a seascape image, then use filters, ending up with the sea looking like an ice rink!! Congrats on the sponsorship with Lumix.

@zipp4everyone263 5 лет назад
About blurring the water, or lack there of, i couldnt agree more. I love it when you get that ice like view of the moment. Where the stream of water stops and you're left with a crystal clear piece of glass and you can see everything in perfect detail.
@RememberTheTrees

I totally agree, about long exposures of waterfalls. It takes the life out of the scene a bit, something about it softens a scene that should usually be quite powerful. Which can work artistically for some people, but for me, most of my photographs are about me trying to capture a memory. My memory of that waterfall is never going to be a lifeless white blur.

@whafrog
@whafrog 5 лет назад
I don't think there's really a point to argue about here, long and short exposures have their uses to "bring you into" a scene, and neither exclusively makes you feel like you're "looking at a photo". Photography is all "selective lying" anyway :) Frozen water reveals power, that droplets spring higher and further than we expect, the individual sparks of light create interesting patterns. Blurred water conveys peace, but also reveals patterns in the motion of the mass of water, the general trends of the stream. If you want closest to what the eye sees, it's probably around 1/25th second. But the brain also registers both individual moments that can only be captured in the 1/250th second range, and also the general trends that require 1/2 second or less to reveal in a photo. The trick is really to decide which shutter speed conveys the mood of the place you're in, or the story you're trying to tell, and I do think many people end up falling into a habit of assuming they have to do one or the other.

Saw this video not too long ago, got reminded of it when somebody insisted I use long exposure to blur the water in a photograph I took. I thought the texture of the water was perfectly fine and interesting, and making it "smooth" wouldn't have added anything. I do use "long exposure" often as a tool often to achieve the *correct* exposure and maintain higher image quality, with better noise levels and dynamic range , but not necessarily just to achieve a blurry effect. Sometimes I do, but not always.

I think an exposure time of 0.5-2" is generally more than enough to get the movement of the water, but still show some of the 'chopiness(?)' of the water. I try and limit that to my maximum exposure time for water these days. An Olympus body could have done a few seconds handheld for the northern lights. My old EM-1 did a 2" exposure in Iceland for a waterfall in very low light and it came out great. I've seen up to 4" for northern lights handheld! Great videos as always, James. Really enjoying watching another m4/3 shooter/vlogger. Keep up the good work.

Peter Forsgård's tip directed me to your channel. Now I am not a landscape photographer (although I will often take a camera on a walk, just in case I come across something that will make a nice shot), but the reasons you give why you don't bother about long exposures, are very similar to why I don't bother about about a lot of post processing that a lot of colleague concert photographers do nowadays. I want to tell a story about the artists and make the viewers feel they are actually witnessing that moment in the concert. You talk sense to me.

Nice one James, I totally agree. To me it represents the cheesy side of photography, Like when someone makes a full photo black and white and reintroduces colour in the reflection of a puddle or petals on a flower. In regards to water, sometimes when filming, I'll use a fast shutter to capture the water mid air etc, looks so cool.

I think the best technique for moving water is to either go insane and, while having the camera in shutter priority, max out the shutter speed (fastest your camera can do) OR do the typical slower shutter speed with a filter. I think doing anything in between can be a bit boring and snapshotty. One of my favorite photos I took was of a waterfall in the Smoky Mountains that I took at 1/8000 shutter speed. The water looks crazy powerful.

It's nice to hear your views on long exposure. I disagree however because I love long exposure BUT I think there is a way to get both sides of the argument together. I find it nice to blur the water but only slightly. There's a fine line between blurred and still but it is possible to blur the water but in such a way that you still retain the dramatic feel of the image without making it too smooth. If that makes sense. Can't think of a way to put it. More often than not my long exposures are silky smooth but now and again i get a shot that's not blurred enough but looks incredible. Anyway great video and your images were fantastic :)

I believe long exposures are great way for new photographers (just like me) to learn the triangle and how to use light and filters. Once you get comfortable with it, it’s more than ok to move on since this kind pf shots are way overused and provide very little differentiation from other photographers

Well, let's see - movies used to use (and still do, afaik) 24 frames per second (give or take), and this is fast enough to let us see a continuous motion (give or take). So - should then not be around 1/20th of a second the shutter speed that gives us the most natural impression of moving water in a still picture? Just musing (and I'm sure it differs for everyone, but it should resemble what our eyes are capable of seeing "in a moment's time").

I always thought I was strange for not liking long exposures. And now I've had that suspicion confirmed since you and I are on the same page! :-) But seriously I like details in the clouds and in the water! Really the only time I think I might like the long exposure is where a glassy reflection in water is required.

I totally agree with your water long exposure point James. I was wondering if you had thought of importing some sheep for your vlogs up north? I reckon a few people miss the sheep angle in your pics and vids. Are you heading over to Gulfoss and Geyser for some shots? Great places mate. Plus there's a big Nanook of the north statue at Geyser. I'd luv to hear your thought's standing near that. Keep up the great work James.

I do agree about that blury waterfall. It´s better to freeze the action 😊

I like tripods but there is a place and time for them. As for Iceland can’t wait to get back there. It’s a photographers canvas with dramatic scenery. Thanks for the video.

Agree 100% Silky water always looks amateurish and overworked to me. Slowish shutter is nice; bit of motion blur but mostly sharp. Dynamism! Great channel btw.

Just a point of photo history from an old guy. The miserable looking blurred long exposure water was a product of slow lenses and slow film in in old high status medium format cameras. For some strange reason 35 mm film users decided that their pictures could look as "good" as medium format if they blurred the water too. It became a thing. A defect was elevated to a cliché. I hate it.

I completely agree. I think long exposures could be good for Sunsets but not for water. It’s so annoying that I can’t post photos here for comparison.

Yep, tend to agree. Feel the same about clouds. I love the shape of clouds and often they’re just blown out by long exposure.

Tony has a video has a solution for not carrying the little tool for the 'not so quick' release plate, replace it with a D ring, see "$6 tripod upgrade will save your butt" .

Congrats on your new partnership! Well deserved. That thing with long expo waterfalls and everything is definitely not good for photography. Well done on becoming well known and still keeping your own style.

In general I agree. I think that something like 1/25 sec is much nicer than 1sec. You could take a bunch of frames in a row at 1/25 and if your client prefers something longer you can always merge some of the frames. But if you took nothing but 1" exposures, you couldn't extract a shorter exposure from those.

I thought I've been all alone. I don't like foggy water on the beach as well, and there are just so much, too much, overwhelming, numbers of long exposure shots of sunsets at the beach, that I'm actually getting tired (if not sick) of seeing those colors with foggy sea water. Long exposure clouds too (mostly they got too weird), though I admit some (few) long exposure clouds could give a strong atmospheric image under certain circumstances and in certain location, which in itself is pretty rare to find.

Don't worry, now the photographers are hand painting the clouds in post so it "looks more like anime".
