Nice Intro! My Grandfather took me to see Treaure Island, Gulliver's Travels And a couple of other classics at the local children's matinee theater downtown. There was also a juggling act, some dogs act, zany antics and a fabulous magic show. Those were magical times. This pirate really scared the daylights out of me.

Yes. Robert Newton has always been best at playing a pirate - any pirate. Fairbanks, Lancaster, and Flynn were men 'playing' pirate. Newton showed a confidence and authenticity completely unmatched by any other. Charles Laughton was good because his skill as an actor was unmatched. Were I to give the title of 'Pirate' to anyone besides Robert Newton of Stephenson's Treasure Island fame, it would be Wallace Beery.

ROBERT NEWTON was in JAMAICA INN, 1932, ALFRED HITCHCOCK. It was MAUREEN O'HARAS' first movie and included CHARLES LAUGHTON. This is not the only pirate movie of LONG JOHN SILVER, that starred ROBERT NEWTON as the lead, LONG JOHN SILVER. It seems as though ROBERT NEWTON was born to play this part. ROBERT NEWTON does not get enough credit for his superb portrayals of THE BAD GUY!!!! Even in OLIVER TWIST, as BILL and starring ALEC GUINNESS as Fagan, his portrayal of bad guy, BILL was supreme. ROBERT NEWTON, One of the finest actors of the 20th century. RIP ROBERT NEWTON 🙏

Robert Newton was a great actor, and could play any type. Including the "pirate accent" which he basically invented. He based it on the people he met growing up in Mounts Bay, near Penzance, on the Lizard, the very south-western end of Cornwall. Robert Newton also briefly attended Exeter School, Devon, a prestigious, private ("public") school, so he was no pirate 🤗 I write from where I live - Exeter, Devon, England 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I would say that Wallace Beery did a pretty job of it as well, the earlier Treasure Island Movie with Jackie Cooper. However, it was Robert Newton and his interpretation and especially his dialect that made the role his own. Also, honestly, doesn't every aspiring pirate actor try to imitate that dialect. Just as they do with Bela Lugosi's when doing Vampire stories.

Thanks for the video. I love the background about the film and the actors. I'm currently reading the classic book Treasure Island.
