Catherine, that means so much coming from you 🙏. We know you had to cut your trip to Florida short. We hope you come back and experience the Everglades. Plus, the Florida National Scenic Trail southern terminus starts in Biscayne National Preserve close to where we are camping. You would love it. Alice and Larry
I stayed in Long Pine Key back in 1993 with a group of volunteers with the Student Conservation Association. We were there partly to help get the park back into shape after Hurricane Andrew swept through the area. We had the whole campground to ourselves from March until May. It was one of the best experiences of my life.
@@DownsizingMakesCents it was great getting a virtual tour through the campground. I haven’t been back there since 93. I was very glad that you drove through each loop as I was hoping this would jog my memory as to where we were camped. The park rangers had placed a trailer there for us to use. Inside was a small kitchen, a dining area and a couch and some chairs. Beside the trailer was a large, tall green Army tent with room for everyone. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to determine which campsite was ours. Thanks for the video tour.
Wow! Nike-Hurc Misslle Site! That is a really interesting piece of history since that was a nuclear air-defense weapon system (that the US Army moved away from in the late '70s) designed to detonate in the air in order to destroy large air formations of enemy aircraft. At some point we realized this type of weapon system is probably not the best approach since it affects both the enemy AND us! I didn't know we had one of those down there but not surprised that we did! Thanks for sharing so much great info about this great National Park and area most American know so little about!
Andrew, I was surprised myself. It was so interesting to see it in the middle of a National park. It’s also scary to know we had places like this. I hope you get to check it out one day. Alice
Bob, we decided to do site to site because we couldn’t find good pictures when we wanted to book a site. Thank you. It’s a lot of work and doesn’t get views like other videos but we know people appreciate them thanks 🙏 Alice
Nicely done! And let's not forget: The other Everglades NP Visitor Center, which is in Everglades City on the Gulf Coast. It is the only city in American history arrested by the FBI, lock stock & barrel. These days the fishermen there are (mostly) fishing for seafood once again, rather than the elusive 'square grouper'.
Jack, we are going to visit the northern section in a few weeks- Shark Valley. I might have to look this incident up for another video. Not sure everyone knows about square grouper 😂 Alice
We would take 80s.. it's -20 below zero in Wisconsin right now... those were some big gators & what a beautiful area to hike. Long Pine Key Campground looks really nice- Chasing RV Sunshine 🌞Joel, Deb & 🐕 Maya
Hi guys. I agree. 20 below is too cold 🥶 for me. We did see some big ones 🐊😂. Long Pine was a beautiful spot. And we tested our dry camping skills. Take care, Alice
I love that tee-shirt Alice!! Good choice :) I didn't want to skip over any of it. I wanted to watch the whole thing. Larry I love your information on the actually campsites~
Kathy, thanks. There’s one company that makes great shirts for the National Parks. Super comfy. We try to give info on a campground that we would want. Thanks for watching, Alice
Good morning guys. You do best the RV virtual tours of campgrounds, bar none. I read that you are planning on coming back to Canada again. Please make sure to keep up with on rules posted by the federal and provincial governments as they change more often than I change underwear... 😉... Love your channel!
Miyvna, thank you. We know that tours don’t get as many views but we know people find them helpful. We have tons of footage of provincial parks we aren’t sure what we will do with it 😂 The rules do seem to change. We want to go see Larry’s nephew in Nova Scotia. So we will hit the east coast going up and keep checking. Thanks for the heads up. Take care, Alice
@@DownsizingMakesCents My last work assignment before retiring back to the US was three years in England. After being cold the whole time, I promised myself I’d never complain about hot weather again! Thanks again for the great video.
Awesome. We loved it there. We are now working on our time at Midway Campground video which will include Shark Valley, Oasis Visitor Center, loop road and more, Alice
Emily, thank you. We loved it. But the weekends did get a bit loud- mostly tenters. But there is so much to do close by. I can’t wait to go back. Alice
We were supposed to be at Long Pine this week. Moved to a resort with power since it is a little warm for no AC. Headed to Key West now. Stuck on Hwy 1 due an accident ahead of us... enjoy your stay! Thanks for the video
Scott, we did not expect the heat. But between our solar, lithium, micro start, and generator, we were able to run our bedroom AC for several hours. Sorry you are stuck in traffic. We are in the keys now ourselves. Glad we could distract you while in traffic 😅 Enjoy the keys, Alice
Thanks for making this video - we enjoyed it. We are on are way to Florida next week and booked a site at Long Key Pines. We'll be putting up a video on our channel soon.
You might be able to call and ask for it. I’m not sure. Our spot was assigned and them the spot was wrong orientation so we asked what sites were available. Then I biked to find a better site and told them which one we chose. It’s a beautiful place. Good luck, Alice
Wow! That is incredible information about everything and your site footage was very kind!! It's already so hard to get sites in state campgrounds. Thank you!
I would love to have your problem. We got a high of 28 today and a low of 9. lol Holy crap there are gators everywhere. I would assume this is not a good place to walk pups. They may become a snack. I do like the missile site. That is cool. Wow that was some water to ride through. lol Looks like plenty of room at the sites. I like how the a lot of the motorhomes pull straight in. That is smart. Looks like a great campground. Very well laid out. You are rolling blading. That is a girls game Larry. Minus 1 man card. lol Great video y'all.
William, I know we are complaining about heat and everyone else is freezing. Sorry. There are no dogs allowed. Safer to keep them at the campground. Nike site was very cool. The ranger there had so much cool info. I wish I could have included it all. You definitely need to pick the right site so your door is on the best side. That why we had to switch. Hey. Larry played roller hockey. He could kick your but. You lose 10 man points for never playing roller or ice hockey 😂 Still love you 😉 Alice
Awesome Video we live 30 minutes from here and have never checked it out. I guess you never know what's really in your backyard. We'll have to spend a weekend there soon :)
Most definitely. I lived in Florida since I was 2 and never visited the Everglades. I’m making up for lost time 😂 We will have another video about Big Cypress & the northern part of the Everglades in the future. Alice
Great video. We've camped at Flamingo (all the way at the end). It's a beautiful spot but we were there during a record mosquito season. There are lots of great places to paddle back there.
Chris, we tried Flamingo but it was booked. But Long Pine Key had few bug issues. We are going back but to visit the northern section of the Everglades. Maybe we will paddle then. Alice
Really nice job reporting on the camping site and park! Thank you for sharing this. I'd be afraid to stand as close to the gator as you did. Thank you for sharing! Donovan and Jodi
Scott, that park is on our list. It’s so hard to get into state parks right now. Actually, all are full except maybe some expensive private we can’t afford. Alice
Shion and Matthew, I bought the shirt at the COE visitor center. It is comfy. We are going back to the top of the Everglades. I can’t wait. But this time we will have power 😂 I hope you make it there. It’s amazing, Alice
Steve, though this is a private RV park, they did give a small discount with our National Park pass. We love state parks but the the site here was so big and private. Hope you get camping soon, Alice
I do the campground tours on my bike with an iPhone gimbal. It’s funny the reaction I get from other campers I am obviously filming. Hope to see you on the road this year. We are headed up the east coast on our way to Canada in may. Hopefully COVID will be more controlled by then. Larry
We are going to this campground this coming tuesday. Can't wait. This is not at all what I thought I was going to. It looks very nice and huge. Can you tell me if the mosquitoes were very bad when you were there? I've heard nightmares about the mosquitoes in the Everglades. Thanks so much. Lynn and Danny
I don’t remember them being a problem at the campground- it’s near water they can be bothersome. When you park your RV, you can orientate the way you want. If you try to stay on the payment, you may not fit. Plus, depending on the type of RV, it may seem like the site is “backwards” And we had a problem with partying tenters on the weekend. But it’s a perfect location to go to the National Park - the southern end. Have fun 🤗 Alice
Very nice video. It looks nice there at The Everglades. Looks like a nice Rv park. It nice you can bike ride. Or even walk. Very nice tour. Saw Larry roller skating or roller blading. Not sure which it was.,Thst looks like fun. I have not roller skates in years. Every time I tried someone wound one along and knock me down same thing with ice skates. Have had a bad knee ever since. Seen those alligators weren’t you scared to be by one? Or is that when they attack you is when they get mad is when they sense you are afraid? Thank you for this video. Have a great day and see you you soon! Stay safe.
Sherri, it’s a beautiful park and campground. Larry was roller blading. He’s so good because he played ice hockey and roller hockey. The gators seem to be so used to people. I don’t think they noticed us. But I was a bit scared though I’ve grown up in Florida and I have seen lots of gators. See you next time, Alice
@@DownsizingMakesCents Ok thank you much. You are right the gators get used to seeing people. Especially everyday there. Have a great week and day. Oh and Happy Valentine’s Day!
@downsizingmakessense Saw you guys on Nomadic Fanatic! That was really cool of you guys to film home and let him know. 🤗💜 So, I decided to subscribe to you.
Connie, we just knew he would love footage from another view. We met him before he kayaked and he was super cool. We were just glad he liked it. It was cool if him to give us a shout out. Alice
@@DownsizingMakesCents We would LOVE to meet him, he seems like a rely great guy. It was really nice of him to give you guys a shout out. He seems to really love his followers! We can't wait to hopefully meet you guys too! We are looking into selling our home and living the RV/Class B life. We really need to downsize though. Hopefully watching how you guys do it, will help out a lot! Have a wonderful rest of your day! Stay Safe! 🤗
@@Beatlesfan1076 Connie, it was surprisingly cool. And the shoutout was really beyond what he needed to do. Larry just loves sharing cool footage. He does it with kite surfing friends too. Downsizing is hard. Try to do some every day. You don’t have to decide about every item. Something I kept in the first purge didn’t make it to the last purge. Good luck. Maybe we will see you out there one day, Alice
Bill and DeAnna, I can’t believe I’ve lived in Florida since I was 2 and I’m just now seeing the Everglades. We are going back to the northern point in a few weeks. You definitely need to put it on your list. I hope your friends have fun, Alice
Paul, we have had mixers reviews about separating them or putting them together. We figure with the chapters, you can skip and just see what you want to see. Thanks again, Alice
I have only camped in California and I was really surprised that they allowed trucks and trailers on the grass - that's a big No-No here you stay on the concrete is that common only to Florida? On another RU-vid channel or possibly one of your first videos someone stated that if you get a Florida state park pass that even if you're not a resident of Florida sometimes they will give you a camping discount at their state parks, is that true? Do you have a Florida State Park pass? Adding this to my state of Florida must visit! Thank you for your time and effort!
Jeanette, I think they let you park on the grass because the concrete is often too small for the length they have it marked for. Plus, depending on the site, your door may be on the wrong side. This campground goes through a private company but we did get a small discount with our America the Beautiful annual National park pass. We don’t have a Florida state park pass. We have asked in the past if you get a camping discount with it and were told no. It’s just for day use. The only discount for camping is senior Florida resident, and disabled that I know of. There might be a military one. Rumor is that Florida might leave Reserve America. So who knows. Alice
Jim, we were in 48 which is green 34-37. However, when I booked on the phone, I was told we would get a 40’. And we had to change sites because we wouldn’t fit in the original and backing in, door would have been in wrong side. Water sights are 4 RV (62, 64, 66, 68) and 3,tent sites. I hope that helps. Alice
Incredibly thorough, but then that is how you guys roll! Awesome place, we really love the natural areas like that so much more than "resorts"! I so wish we had gone south....right now we are dodging the vortex🤣. I saw several empty sites. Did you find the kCG to be completely full on the weekends?
Thanks guys. We loved how spacious the sites were. It’s not supposed to be that hot that time of year. I hope you guys stay warm. We will head north very slowly soon. The campground was packed and loud on the weekends. But isn’t everywhere. Ugh. Hope you guys are enjoying yourselves. Alice
I have AT&T and looking to possibly adding a Verizon jetpack or something similar as I work remotely and being without internet connection is not an option for me. Thanks for answering.
@@DownsizingMakesCents Thank you. After I saw your reply, I booked 3 nights at Long Pine Key and 4 nights at Flamingo. It is very nice of you to answer so quickly. I checked out some of your other videos and subscribed. Your information is presented in a very concise and helpful manner.
Hi can you tell me what you use for those dam noseeums they bite the hell out of me that's why I won't stay in the far south when I'm in Florida thanks
