Team Wild TV: Episode 13. Clever corvids are tough to get close to, so we are using some remote control tactics to get on top of them for a local farmer. The high speed flat shooting .17 round is perfect for the 100 yard plus shots on offer.

Remember that this was one of our very first videos. We now get new videos up DAILY. We're not planning on publishing more than 365 videos per year. I'm totally uninterested in what the antis say - and that's an understatement. You're never going to change their minds, not matter what you do.

You were spot on with your assessment of the Ruger 77 rimfire series. I own a 77/22 magnum rifle. They cost a good deal more than a marlin or savage but are well worth the money. The gun is as good quality as a centerfire hunting rifle. The trigger on this gun is far too heavy. I believe mine was 6 and a half lbs. I bought an aftermarket trigger and now the pull is 2 and a half lbs. I absolutely love it now. It is ridiculously accurate with 33 grain Remington ballistic tips.

What a lot of people don't realise is that some of the most destructive pests are not the rooks, which are what you are shooting here, but the insect larvae they are the main predator of. You can have a greater weight of insect larvae under the ground than sheep and cattle on top! I am an ex farmer and I'll own up to shooting a lot of things, but I would never touch the rooks, because they do far and away mor good than harm.

A .22 mag with Shepherd scope would smoke their asses. I have taken bounty varmits in Louisiana @ 400 yards with a .22 mag. My partner was shooting a .17 and had pitiful success. He is a very good shot but the .22 mag. outperformed him. My package was a Ruger w/carbon fiber barrel, custom trigger adjusted to 2#, Shepherd scope and Hogue moulded stock. I once clipped 8# mono @ 50 yards with the .22 mag. Very accurate package and a pleasure to shoot.

I haven't checked the actual muzzle velocity over the chrono yet, but if you believe the box, the Winchester V-Max kicks out the 17grain bullet at 2550fps. This equates to 245fpe at the muzzle.

Only just clocked this video. Zero 200yrd then 3.5" drop to 300 yrds. Why did I buy a 220 swift? Actually published trajectory for 17gn Hornady ammo is 2 feet of drop at 300 from a 200 zero but you also have to cope with a 4 inch high 100 yrd trajectory no wonder most of your targets were taken at ranges within the capability of the average 22 LR.

Great video, but 300 yards is asking a tad much from the 17 HMR. Maybe 200 yards. I have the same caliber in a Browning T-bolt. The CCI A-17 17 HMR @ ammo @ 2,650 fps will still be going 1,466 fps at 200 yards with 81 ft. lbs of energy. Sighted in at 100 yards, the drop at 200 yards will be only 7.5 inches. Actually a bit less drop because the ammo's actual muzzle velocity is about 2,700 fps. I really like the fact that they've put a 3-12x56 MM Zeiss Victory scope on the rimfire, instead of the usual 50 Euro Bushnell Banner. I had the same Zeiss scope, and it was my favorite. The video demonstrates why it makes good sense to put an expensive scope on a rimfire rifle. The only drawback is that most rimfire ammo bullets have fairly low ballistic coefficients. The above 17 grain bullet's ballistic coefficient is only .128, whereas the 17 Winchester Rimfire Supermag 25 grain round uses varmint bullets that have a BC of .185. The BC of a bullet is useful because it tells us instantly at approximately what range in yards that the bullets muzzle energy will drop by 50%. In this case, the 17 HMR 17 grain bullet has lost 50% of its energy at 128 yards.

With most 17hmr cartridges, you get a better MPBR if you zero at 150 yards meaning not as much aiming under close targets. Great little vermin cartridge and fun when you can snipe enemy greycrows from 300 yards once you know what elevation or holdover to use. Wind drift is the biggest factor in missing with a hmr even more so than drop.

It depends what you call "dropping off". A .22LR 40gn subsonic round at 1100fps does 'drop off' significantly over 60 yards in comparison to the 17grain .17HMR at 2500fps - but you adjust your zero to compensate for longer distances. Usually when I'm out with the Team Wild boys, I will zero my CZ 452 .22 at 100 yards and will quite happily take rabbits out to 115-120 yards, while the others use a 50-yard zero for the bulk of the work. The .22LR is still our favourite workhorse rimfire round! :-)

oh no doubt the 22LR is a very versatile well rounded caliber, over looked simply because its small and does not have the loud bang. like i said though it depends on the cartride sub sonis high velocity or hyper velocity, and as well with the grade of barrel, twist etc. but hands down when it comes to range and terminal velocity the 17HMR more than holds its own
