During this lovely Autumn day, I've found a nice, colorful hill to take the quad over.
Unfortunately I was so hasty to make it to the top, that I didn't scout the area any bit, so that I know where I am.
Therefore, when I was about to return back home I got confused and was heading in the wrong direction, where I as presuming I was stationary.
The rest is in the video, hope you will enjoy my adventure.

Your right about the GPS. I used to own a drone with GPS, usually, that one was sent first, then I would learn the surroundings. Unfortunately I lost that drone.

Exactly. I spent so much effort in making the GPS work well in my 5-inch fpv drone. It had issues with interference etc, but solved it by wrapping its bottom and sides using two layers of anti-static plastic sheets. Worked like a charm. Can't afford to lose the drone in this kind of scenarios.

Mistakes makes us better pilots (if we can afford them). I'm not trying to be nasty but: My thoughts: no GPS? really dumb. If you go down in those trees you will probably NEVER locate your quad. GPS cost $30. ALWAYS do a 360 to get an idea of where you are. You realized your battery was low WAYYYYY before you turned backed. really dumb. You started with a less than full battery, OK if you are flying close but really dumb going out away from home. In that situation when you discovered you were lost, Stay at the high altitude (gives you a better chance of getting back home and a bigger view) you can always lower your altitude when you think you battery is ready to fail. Staying at the higher altitude DOES NOT use up any more battery power, you are already up high. Good job watching your OSD and found you were headed in the wrong direction. Also, good job looking for an open place to land. Glad your quad was recovered

@@adventure_boy I’m glad you received my post in the way it was intended, to help. Here are 3 sites that will get you all the info needed to setup, test and rely on GPS For betaflight Joshua Bardwell ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B_Yl0wqRf68.html For Inav Pawel Spychalsky (one of the developers for INAV) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KeRv484ntzQ.html and Also for Inav Painless360 Most people I know use a FC setup with INAV which is much better on LR than Betaflight. In INAV you will be able to do Missions (autonomous flights controlling altitude, speed and direction). AutoLanding and many other features. I use Betaflight for short flights (under 1.6Km) and Inav for all other LR flying. One other thing if you have an ‘Open TX” radio you can download a LUA SCRIPT from GitHub that will take your GPS coordinates and display them on your radio screen using any RX that send Telemetry. And they will be saved on your screed even if you lose connection with a downed quad. I wish you Happy Flying 😊

I always thought long range was at least 10-15 km. Here, by eye, there were only about 2 kilometers. And if you do fall somewhere in the forest, for such cases there is a GPS beacon or at least an autonomous beeper
@adventure_boy
@adventure_boy 7 месяцев назад
Oh, thanks for letting me know, but be aware there are plenty of RU-vid videos I've seen doing 3 - 4kms saying they are doing long range, please make sure you update them as well. Why would you launch a 4s at 15.2v? That is when I typically land them. My hope is you were just having a good day and decided to use your least spent pack for 'one more flight' and this is not common practice :-). I have lost a few aircraft that way, they linger 3.75-3.6 (per cell) for a while but then drop like a rock. Now I stay at or above 3.8v per cell (regardless of S), just bring more packs if you need them, batteries are cheaper than aircraft. Avoids puffing too so also saves on battery costs. Great save though!

@@spotLV would like to clarify a few things. There are the DJI consumers drones, like the Air3, Mini4Pro or Mavic3 that have very good cameras, even better than GoPro but for different purposes. Then there are the fpv drones that may use, what is now, the old air unit which is far less performant when compare to the gopros. But more recently this unit was upgraded to what is so called o3 system that is very comparable to GP. However it may have some limitations and still some will prefer a GP on top of drone. In my opinion the o3 is almost as good as the GP, but not quite there. However, if I were to have a small drone, like a 4", I would fly without a GP for more flight time.

Why record audio from the drone?
@adventure_boy
@adventure_boy 8 месяцев назад
This is a question I don't see that often. Usually, but mostly in the DJI groups everyone is asking how to record sound from the drone, therefore I don't really get your question or the reason for asking. Maybe you can elaborate a little bit.
@DonnieBrass
@DonnieBrass 8 месяцев назад
@@adventure_boy Sure...I don't see the point in placing a microphone onto a device that screams, whines or hums to the point that most drones do since the only sound that mic will likely be recoring is the sound of the drone. I can kinda get it for fpv freestyle guys who just love the sound of hearing the motors and props doing their job as they crank it through the moves...kinda. I find drone videos more enjoyable to watch with sounds that are added in later in post. Maybe it's just me, but I don't really care for the sound drones make and do see the point in recording audio from a drone, which is why I asked about doing it.
@adventure_boy
@adventure_boy 8 месяцев назад
In my videos I sometimes leave the drone sound and sometimes not, depending on the scope of the video. When I go for some cinematic shots, like this one, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7lGIJIq_0Aw.html, I take out the drone sound completely, because the focus is not on the drone, but the scenery. When I try to emphasis what the drone is doing, like in this case, then I leave the sound in, it's for better immersion into the act. And as you mentioned, some drone pilots, like those that run analogue actually have an earplug through which they listen to the drone sound live, helps them fly better. To me the sound of an FPV drone, makes sense, because it follows the movement the drone makes. In the end its a subjective thing, you can either like it or not.

Made this same mistake in NH! Always do a 360 during your treck to your destination 1. To make sure your video is good for the return and 2. To take note of your takeoff point and what it looks like that far out so you know what your looking for! My first long range was on 6s 7inch with 500mw vtx and flysky i6s with 4w wifi booster! It worked like a charm but the 14dbi patch I was using with my makerfire cheapo box goggles wasn't up for the task! After losing that quad 3 miles away! I got all tbs gear for video and control link and use Inav and gps! Setup way points ahead of time set to a safe landing zone just incase and have it set to land incase home is too far away I know ware to look incase! After losing $3k of gear I got smart!
