Long Range license-free Network Radio Tested from Canadian Arctic (Zello + SATCOM)

During the making of this video, I was using free SATCOM to make contacts from the High Arctic in Canada to the rest of North America and Western Europe.
SATCOM? Well...kind of! The signals I was transmitting were transmitted via cellular data to an Arctic telecom provider. From here they left the community via satellite. Cambridge Bay receives all its internet traffic by satellite backhaul. So my Network Radio contacts were happening via SATCOM. Cool!
In this video you will see how I used the Zello platform to make a 1150 mile contact from the Arctic to another area of Northern Canada. I was using a Radio-tone RT4, and my contact was using an Inrico S200.
I explain how Network Radios work, talk about the Zello platform, show some hardware examples, and end with a couple of QSOs to North America and Europe - from a handheld radio in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A LICENSED HAM RADIO OPERATOR to own and use Network Radio equipment (unless you want to access Zello to repeater crosslinks).
You can find out more about the Network Radios channel suite at their official website : networkradios.weebly.com/
At the end of the video, I am using Network Radio CH00.
Many Network Radio users choose the excellent, and free, Zello platform. Visit Zello.com for more information.
As always, thanks for watching the Frugal Radio (FR) channel!

Yet another great informative video giving people a small glimpse in to network radio and the use of zello of which I tend to use daily basis for personal use and work (Ems). Very reliable service and have only experienced two occasions in the past 5 years when zello has gone offline be it just for a couple of hours if that. Enjoy watching your videos and would welcome seeing more the network radio side of things in the future. Best wishes from the UK. Pete Dalton comms NR911

Perfect Demo, so easy to follow your introduction. These handheld devices look stunning, especially those with bigger screens. I wait for something from China at a $100 price range. Maybe they offer combi devices with UHF and Network use builtin. That way you could also talk simplex over a local repeater without a data connection.

Indeed, such multi mode devices have been around for a few years, most with 400-480 MHz radios. Some do DMR as well, although not always DMR Tier II compatible. Generally the cost is more than $100.

How do I know what needs a license, and what doesn't? I understand this uses more than one form of network. When am I using an amateur repeater somewhere along the way? Does it need a cell phone to work? Needs an app? I suppose they'll want to know everything about me and put it all online. Would that be so? Will it work in a grid down situation under any circumstances?

@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio Год назад
Not really. Because I was so far north, the local community receives all its internet via satellite. That's why my transmissions from the Arctic were going via Sat. Ordinarily they will go by terrestrial means, including the underground cables on the ocean floor. There's a bit more explanation in the description.

I like using Network Radio. Been a cb user since I was a kid in the 70's, licensed ham since 1996, GMRS licensed, use Murs, Frs, this is just another form of communication. People cry "its not ham radio" or "its dependant on infrastructure" well yeah, alot of those other services I mentioned are not ham either, I like comms, Im not "married to ham", and as far as infrastructure, well hams are dependant on repeaters for long range local comms which is infrastructure, and likely less robust than the cell tower systems, hf is dependant on atmospheric conditions, and can be hit or miss. These network radios just work, crystal clear, no fuss, no mess of antennas or amplifiers, and if theres some kind of "disaster" I have all kinds of redundant backups of the other services. Network radio is just easy and clear and has the best "range" 99.9% of the time.
@FrugalRadio

Does one problem? I'm looking for a app for my cell phone that will work with any GMRS radio or I did GML or DMRS. Radio sorry I don't GMRS radios that actually have an app to work with Android. And do they work with voice text? Or how do they work curious to know thank you? Because somebody has to invent an app for GMRS walkie-talkies for Android and iPhone as well as for the desktop or laptop. Because GMIS is actually becoming very big and being AGM RS is becoming very big. The same way hand radio license people probably can have an app on their cellphone like. I'm finder and stuff like that shouldn't be something for GMRS something like that I think so. I think that it should be something like that for GMRS the same. We'd like to offender for ham radio license. People have a hamburger license. The same thing should be for gym or s shouldn't there yeah yeah I think so? GMS should be on the Android and iOS devices as well as your desktop for laptop I. And I will list devices whatever it is. Show me for all systems no matter what. It should be apts for GMS the same rate that's for ham radio users. That will greatly improve improve the GMS range for GMS walkie-talkies. The reason why ham radio license people. Can talk world win all over the globe is? Because. Of apps like? I've finder as well as some other apps. But GMIS is basically left in the dust for why? Why is it left in the dust for a whole for wife or what? There should be apps there should be apps for Android. IOS PC Mac whatever GMRS radio users the same leader is far ham radio users. On all devices GMS apps which will it? Which. Will enhance the range of your GMRS walkie-talkie? If that happens. Shouldn't it be something like that I think so?

Yes, and every cell phone is a radio. Take the radios out of your cellular device and you'll not be communicating with anyone. Wifi : needs a 2.4/5.8 GHz radio. Cellular : multiband radio transmitting and receiving from 650-2400 MHz. Bluetooth : another radio. So yes, a mobile phone dressed like a two way radio, but it is actually transmitting and receiving signals which makes it a radio nonetheless.

Your regular phone battery will go flat quickly. There custom hardware means you have a massive battery, and very little draw, since you aren't syncing all the regular smartphone data. You can also leave your screen off. I literally get 2 weeks out of a network radio before needing a charge. That's at about 90 minutes of solid QSO each day. Using a phone requires the screen to be on so you can press the software PTT key. If only monitoring on the phone, the screen can be off. For a year or so I used an old phone in the car as my network radio device. Moving to an actual device designed for network radio made life a lot more pleasant. For one to many type calls, I enjoy it. Looks like a two way, functions like a two way, but sounds way better and provides far more range than a typical UHF Motorola!
