Optically centring the Arken ep5 with the Rigid precision 20moa 1 piece 34mm scope mount using eaglevision picatinny adapters on the AirArms dovetail scope rail
Ive been slowly optimising the setup for really pushing the ranges out to the extremes .The plan later in the year is to start competing in some of the new ARL / PRS type disciplines. The outdated dovetail rings are finally gone and ive successfully swapped over to a picatinny 1piece mount. its rock solid and now sits very close to its optical centre. this now allows me to dial out to 150 yards and can easily swap between a far larger range of picatinny mounts.
i look at what 20moa actually is and measure it with my digital level box to see what 20moa is in degrees.
heres a link to the initial testing and setup of the arken ep5

Tilly good vid, i had a paie of eaglevision 2 piece picatinney mounts, the best thing you can do with those are remove the overly strong springs ,as the grub screws are not strong enough to hold them closed due to the spring pressure, recknagel do a nice 1 pice picatinney rail, but not cheap,rgds steve

Hi Tilly, I've been using the Arken Halo rings for over a year, and they are excellent. I've been on and off various rifles, and they look and fit as good as the day I got them.

Hi mate, I think I'm going to give them a go in the 30mm 2piece configuration. They should be perfect on the katran/optisan CP combo as that has 20moa cut into the factory pic rail

Interesting, I have Wulf Adjustable 40MOA Mounts for a Vector Optics 34mm 12-60x60mm with 40MOA of adjustment, but the Tikka T3x TAC A1 did not give me enough elevation with .308 Win to 600 yards on the standard Vector Optics Mounts supplied, I don't like relying on the limits of a scope adjustment to put accurate rounds on a target, hence decided on the Wulf Mounts. I've not seen a cantilever mount with 30MOA as yet, since have a shell catcher mounted beneath the scope over the extraction port, the one piece mounts won't work for me, so either separate mount rings or cantilever is required.

Great video. Have you looked into the Arken EPL4? Has all the same features but focuses down to 10 yards! Maybe they would be willing to send you one since you have given this one such high praise.

Hi mate, I looked closely at all the models. The shorter focus of the epl would definitely be much more convenient for the majority of air usage... The main reason I didn't go for one over the ep5 is the 8mill per revolution on the top turret. Just a weird coincidence really with my rigs. 100yds is almost exactly 8mill. I've used a few scopes with 8mill per revolution and it's so easy to end up a 'turn out' . So I'd often end up thinking I was at zero but actually still be at 100.. just me being careless... With 10 mill per turn, I immediately know which way I need to dial back. Less thinking😆 which is is important especially shooting against the clock or filming.. A few of my mates have got the EPL now and are very pleased with them though

Cheers mate. It really is an eye opener how little misalignment it takes to throw a scope out. Or in this case get it nearly on centre.😉

On the rimfire Dave? What scope did you go for in the end or still choosing? The cantilever mount looks a little unusual but it's rock solid and feels like a decent long term solution. I think I'm going to go the same setup on the 9015 too

@@tillysgunstocks the reason for going pic rail was I wanted to fit a brass catcher as got fed up grovelling around tidying brass after a session. Have just used same scope, still looking for something else. Seen the newer falcons and want a look in the flesh.

Very interesting, I have struggled to find decent mounts for my BSA10. Have a set that are secure, but a very ugly fit, doubt you would have any consistency with removal and refitting, but the scope never leaves that so not too much of an issue. Might get myself one of those Eaglevision adapters though. I have a couple of the sets from West Hunter too and am pretty pleased with them and the versatility of them. Like you said, next day from Amazon for a good price, so worth a try.

Hi mate, there's a BSA specific eaglevision mount. I can't comment on how good it fits,but it seems a popular option. You could then easily run a 1pc or 2pc mounts directly over the magazine cutout. The more rigidity you can get into the scope rail the better on the BSA's 😉

Don’t forget that when buying any adapter for a dovetail it will probably be an 11mm one, but the dovetail on your BSA is 3/8” which is slightly larger.

Hi Tiily, did your EP5 come optically centred from the factory? I picked up an EPL4 last week from Arken and it came wound all the way down on the elevation turret and zero locked, I didn't notice until I went to put the gun away after optically centring with my adjustable mounts, the first time I have had a new scope from a factory that didn't have the turrent's set at midway, I will keep an eye on the next one I order,
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 3 месяца назад
Hi mate, yes my ep5 was optically centered out the box. The initial clicks onto zero also confirmed it was there or thereabouts. And the same when I swapped to the 20moa mount. With the 20moa mount I'm only 5 clicks on the elevation off optical centre now and a couple clicks to centre it on the windage. I can't speak of the other models though,I've not seen any in the flesh yet😉
@tonybyrne8763
@tonybyrne8763 3 месяца назад
@@tillysgunstocks Possibly the way they set up an EPL4 due to its relatively small amount of elevation windage range, 68 MOA on the EPL4 as opposed to 110 MOA on the EP5, I have an EP8 and that came optically central, which has the same 110 MOA adjustment as the EP5, I have two Zulus as well and personally rate Arken at least on PAR with my Element's for build quality, id like to a do direct comparison of the EP5 next to the Element Titan's I have, the EPL4 isn't found wanting compared to my Element Nexus's all things considered in my initial comparisons.

I like the quality of that 1 piece and would go for it BUT i pretty much shoot 50 yards. does that mean using these +20moa is a no no? All the good 1 piece mounts i see are + moa
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 4 месяца назад
Hi mate, even at typical ranges the 20moa is handy. It'll just mean you will be zeroing closer to the scopes optical centre. On normal mounts I was losing near 6mill of the scopes internal adjustment just adjusting the elevation for a 25yd zero. With the 20moa I was just shy of 1mill off the scopes optical centre. That has freed up much more elevation adjustment for the extended ranges in my case but it's definitely not a problem for more typical ranges,it'll just mean you're working nearer the scopes optimum.so definitely dont disregard a nice moa mount 😉

@andrewworley8946
@andrewworley8946 4 месяца назад
When using the adapters I clip them "open" into the mount and then clamp to the dovetails as a "complete" unit. I can't remember where I saw/read this but it was presented as the correct way to do it?
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 4 месяца назад
Hi mate, it's worth trying either way just to make sure your getting the flattest most consistent grip on the dovetail. On the front portion of my 9015 block, they dog up nicely with the side screws,yet the rear portion of the block (the dovetails are subtly different in their top face between front and rear portions) they sit best when the pic mount does the clamping.. just the usual dovetail foibles 😆

@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 4 месяца назад
I've got a few sets now in the workshop, I've used a set for a little while on the katran and I don't think you could really complain atall especially for the price. Even the inexpensive picatinny rings mostly seem to be built to more exacting tolerances than the 'average' dovetail ring. Hardly surprising really given the huge range of dovetail sizes available. 😉

@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 4 месяца назад
Yeah absolutely, I don't think many people will be running an xti with a monster scope on lowish mounts and pushing out to the limits of sub12 ranges. It's a me problem this one 😆 But the tolerances on the readily available dovetail mounts is getting a problem nowadays. Going picatinny opens up a whole new world of options

How much moa is actually built into the rail on the XTI50
@tillysgunstocks
@tillysgunstocks 4 месяца назад
None on the hft version,but the ft version with the riser rail fitted has 20moa on the raised dovetails. All out Ft guns are a bit of an anomaly as most will have a riser rail of sorts, it's a much cleaner way of mounting a riser on dovetails,the raised rail could either be dovetail or picatinny. It'll be great when all the manufacturers offer a factory made pic rail option

Question for you. If you were to set the EP-5 with the sunshade attached, mounted in this Arken Rigid Precision mount, on a long flat surface....... Would the sunshade touch the flat surface?..... And if it doesn't touch ... how much clearance does it have under the sunshade? I have this scope mounted in the Arken TALL (34mm) Halo rings with zero MOA built in, and it almost touches the picatiny rail at the front of my rifle. Note: for anyone buying this scope for a flat top picatiny rail (think AR-15) type gun. You CANNOT use the LOW (30mm) or MEDIUM (32mm) height Arken Halo rings........Lower is always better,..... except when it's not Only the TALL 34mm Halo rings will work. You would think they would tell you that on the Arken website........ But they don't
