I haven’t run it in the winter, but I have run the whole of the arc of attrition course in the summer. I would highly recommend you recce the stretch from Pendeen Watch Lighthouse to St Ives when you visit Cornwall in a few weeks time. I reckon that stretch will be the biggest test re your shoes. I think that’s the toughest section of the course.

Hi Sarah - I ran 20 miles of the NDW in the Saucony Peregrine 10s which are great in the mud! I also have the Inov8 Roclite for fell runs which are also v grippy on wet grass and boggy terrain but more aggressive than the Peregrines.

Living in Cornwall, I'd really like to attempt one of the Arcs some day. Will attempt a R.A.T race which is closer to me 1st. I walked all of the North Cornish Coast in 8days a couple of November's ago in reverse of the direction you'll be headed and between Land's End and St Ives is hard work, but some of the best paths the Southwest Coastpath has to offer, 100% rewarding when you'll look back and say 'I've run that' 😎👊🏻👍🏻

Such a beautiful trail! Really like the vlog/follow along type of video :) An idea for what you could put on your page other than just training plans; audio sessions! Intervals, speed work or other types of workouts/runs with recorded audio guide. Would be lovely to have some sessions were you don't have to rely on the watch and just follow what someone tells you to do (and it's always nice with company even if the company is a recorded voice xD)

I generally wear Hoka Speedgoat Sarah. Evo Speedgoat currently. But to be honest nothing will stop you slipping on that terrain. It’s eyes on the floor for 30 hours and concentrate hard, or you’re in trouble!! Just wear what’s comfortable for that length of time. Have fun and we’ll see you guys down there.

i think you can still follow a route on the 645 though dave? it won't be a full map but you can see the line at least which is still quite useful. don't quote me on that though, garmin make it almost impossible to tell which watches have navigation features!

No grip is enough grip on the Arc if it is wet and muddy. I had Saucony Peregrines on both last year and this and still was sliding all over the place. I would place more importance on some cushioning in the shoe. A poorly padded full on off road shoe is a bad choice for 100 miles as you really need that cushioning. If you have crew, then I would also suggest some road shoes for the Penzance section, that helps a lot to give your feet a break. Keep an eye on the MudCrew website as there is a course description coming out shortly with more on this. If it is dry though (like at a the moment) then you can get away with anything. I did the Pendeen to St Ives section in broken old road shoes a couple of weeks ago and that was fine. But it won't be dry at the end of Jan....

I live in Cornwall and have a pair of salomon speedcross's that I run in on the coast path between Hayle and Sennen. You definitely need a lot of support and grip as its pretty muddy, sandy sections and slippery rocks. I hope this helps!

Hi Sarah, great running videos, with helpful insights, that I have taken onboard. For me, when on long, slippey and technical trail I find you can't beat the Hoka Speedgoat 4. Ridiculously comfortable for miles on end, on any trail surface and with mega grip. I've used them on everything from the Cornish path to even Ben Nevis on the pony trail (well they were the Speedgoat 3 but you get the same deal in the 4). Obviously this is just my opinion on what works for me.
@SarahPlace
@SarahPlace 3 года назад
hey scott, yes i have had a pair of speedgoats in the past but found them a bit narrow and they kept giving me blisters on my little toes, but maybe i just need to get a size up and give them another try, because yeah the amount of cushioning on them and the grip is ideal for this sort of thing!

Hi Sarah, I attempted the Arc last year and although I didn't make it past Penzance, I think I had a good insight into the route! My shoe choice was Saucony Peregrines as they have a great tread for mud, but more importantly for this route, they give very good grip on wet rock. The first 6 miles is hard, so don't go off up the hill at the start too fast as there is nowhere to catch a breath for several miles! Also, it's worth changing socks at Mullion Cove as the section before that is several miles of bog, and I ended up with blisters early on because my feet were so wet. Watch Anna Troup's video from last year to see what I mean! Don't expect the Penzance CP at 38 miles either, I had 41.5 miles on my watch by the time I got there! If you do any reccies, it's worth checking out the last 5 miles as there are some very steep hills with steps, better to know than end up with a nasty surprise at 95 miles. The sound of the sea in the dark, when you are alone, becomes like white noise after a while and started to drive me a bit mad! I'm going back for the 50 this time, and will hopefully do the 100 the year after. May well see you out there on the course!
@SarahPlace
@SarahPlace 3 года назад

@@SarahPlace Ah excellent! I like them and they were given a really good workout in a soggy Scotland a few weeks ago! As for the Arc DNF, it was my fault for not training hard enough and I had a stomach bug a week before too so I just couldn't stomach any food right from the off. I knew my race was over at The Lizard but decided to keep going until I was timed out! Hated every minute and vowed never to go back but that lasted about 24 hours! Unfinished business!

It depends on the conditions the week before but knowing what I've seen of the arc I would go with grip, grip and some more grip. Don't need to be slipping back on the climbs or feeling nervous on the decents. I've ran plenty of it in daily grippy salomons (like the pros or speed cross) and then lots in inov8s (loved the xtalons). Know some people like grippy Hokas for the arc though with the few road bits between
