Just to prove to my crew that vacuum sealing preserves crackers and cookies, I opened a few jar that I vacuum sealed in 2014-2016. The Oreos were as crunchy as the day I sealed them and the crackers and cereal tasted perfect. So they were approx 6-8 years sealed.

Isn't it wonderful how the Lord has things ready for us even before we know we need them?! Happy to report that my saltines serviced five (5) years! Opened them up and they was fresh and crispy as when I bought them. I would suggest smaller jar unless you can eat them right away. Next they were getting the stale taste. But, felt very proud about the storage. Love you ideas, Heidi. Did NOT disappoint!

And there great with coffee or tea because there virtually indestructible haaaa but when people are hungry this stops thous hunger pains and nutritious and no tears from your babies as it was in many famines in history

It helps me a lot to use my brake bleeder by pressing the inside handle against either a table or the back of a sturdy chair. Saves my hands and arms a lot of fatigue. Thanks so much, Heidi :)

Not sure if it was noticeable but I always rest mine against the counter and use my arm, not my hand, to pump

Hi Heidi, I love your videos! Thanks for teaching us how to vacuum seal 😊. When using recycled jars (with the lid and band all in one). Before you vacuum seal you screw on the lid until the jar turns. After you are done vacuum sealing do you tighten the jar top? Or will that ruin the vacuum seal?
@RainCountryHomestead

When using the chamber, yes, when using the foodsaver tops, I do not put the bands on at all until after it is sealed

We mostly vac bag our cereals, leaving the cereal in its original bag, but with a tiny hole punched in using a bulletin board push pin, putting the factory bag into the larger factory made (or roll style cut to length) vac bag and cut out the front of the cereal box, placing that in with the cereal bag so we can instantly tell what type of cereal is in the bag & when dated. We don't vac pack any cereal with nuts of any kind or dried fruits (raisins, blueberries, strawberries, etc) because the oils in the nuts probably go rancid even in a vacuum & similar for the dried fruits.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
I vacuum seal nuts of all kinds, I am not afraid of the fats. Vacuum sealing high fat foods prevents rancidity. I have been doing this for quite a number of years now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AV-cIcmmhd4.html Remember that you can buy nuts vacuum sealed into jars and cans from the store. Plantars used to use that as a main selling feature

@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 года назад
From my own experience in vacuum sealing many different things such as nuts, chocolate chips, herbs, cereal and other dried goods, they should last at LEAST 5 years but I would think even longer as long as they are kept in a cool, dark place and their seals hold

Ok I got on the rabbit trail from this video, watching all your granola and cracker videos. Oh, by the way, I frequently have hair envy watching your videos, lol, but I LOVE your hair in the berry almond episode 😁 so classy. ANYWAY, my question is tgis: if I want to make granola BARS for a grab n go morning, what do I do different other than obviously not stirring it halfway thru? Make it stickier? Maybe a smaller pan to make it thicker? Cooking time might be longer that way, I guess.

Maybe it is because we live in the deep south but, I vacuum sealed store brands of cereal about 19 months ago and it went rancid. We kept at 76 degrees and didn't store any with nuts . I really think it because of the oils
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 года назад
I would say 76° is too warm for storing any kind of fat. Our pantry stays much cooler than that. I store nuts in jars plus many fats without issue of rancidity

Another classic video Heidi Thank you Now question time. We have a second kitchen in our basement. We run two dehumidifiers during the summertime but I am wondering should we still store our full caning jars upstairs?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 3 года назад
Basement is likely better as it typically stays cooler. If the jars are all vacuum sealed, humidity will be less of a problem than light and heat

That was interesting although we don't get those jars and lids over here. While watching I was wondering how big your pantry must be and for what kind of period you think you have to live from your pantry goods. We have a storage ourself but whenever I take something out of it I buy in time to restore my amount. And I would never store crackers in a jar because normally the package in which they are sold are truely dense so one can store those goods for many years (as long as the packages are undamaged of course). But nevertheless it's interesting to listen to your experiences cause they help to think about a besser storage for food.
@RainCountryHomestead

I have several different areas around the home and also offsite where we store food. I believe we have enough for three years right now. Most crackers come in packages that do not keep the crackers fresh, at least from our experience

I have several videos on storing grains. Most will use mylar with oxygen absorbers. However, as long as you have a well sealed mylar bag inside a bucket (make sure you push out all the air you can before sealing) you should not have a problem

For people in areas with high humidity the canning lids can rust very fast. I've started brushing the tops of the lids with rustoleum. I'm careful not to get any where it would come in contact with the food. I'm hoping to multiple uses of the lids this way when dry canning.
@chrishamill3170
@chrishamill3170 3 года назад
In the south also…no problem with lids rusting. Maybe you store things that are kept in high humidity areas.
@theIAMofME
@theIAMofME 3 года назад
I'm in the south too. I have never had a lid to rust. However, the bands do. After they are washed in hot soapy water, I dry them very well. Then dampen a paper towel with oil (olive, or whatever) and wipe them down well with it. Mine don't rust anymore. Even if they did, rings/bands have babies. LOL LIDS are scarce. So maybe try oil instead of a harsh chemical.
