Excellent video! I loved your point at the end with the new tundras, I’m currently trying to build out my gen 3 to be one of the first “luxury prerunners” with the whole LT and fiberglass. Admittedly there isn’t a lot of kits to go around right now but I’m excited to see what these companies start coming out with here soon. So you said that the external reservoir is for heat dissipation, and yes this is true it can help with this along with adding shock oil volume. But I felt I could also add that the main purpose of an external resi is that it separates the oil from the nitrogen in the shock externally from the shock itself which prevents aeration of the shock oil. Roughly half of the resi is actually just nitrogen gas!

Wish we could do this in Australia! Our laws would make this kind of setup illegal (unroadworthy) and hence if caught or picked up by police the vehicle would practically be written off (and no insurance) as the difficulty in having an engineer sign off after removal of welded on frames would be close to zero. A system like this is fairly much unobtainable for us as a street/road registered vehicle. For modifications like this in Australia on road registered vehicles we would need engineers to sign off on the build but even then practically all engineers would not sign this off due to the complexity of our laws and testing requirements. 😢

I'm so happy I found your channel. How does size and weight factor into what vehicle you look for when looking to do a long travel build? For example, do you look for something long and heavy, like a full-size truck like your Tundra? Or something smaller like a Tacoma or 4Runner?
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 11 месяцев назад
This is a great Question. The reality is you can long travel just about anything... in a lot of cases the bigger you go, likely the more expensive it will be. The other big consideration is Power, most people go long travel cause they are interested in Racing (not professionally) but they want to do High Speed Desert and Mtn trails, Sand dunes., FAST..etc. This type of driving is the most fun with a lot of power, especially with Sand... you want a lot of HP. Because of this you will see platforms like the 1st gen Tundra very popular... it is smaller then the full sized Tundra and lighter but it still had V8 engine option that could be Supercharged. Longer wheel bases (not like Ford F350 long, but Tundra and down) actually do very well in high speed long travel because their is more time between the front and rear wheels encountering the same bumps that gives the shocks time to recover. If you look at the Baja 1000 Trophy Trucks - which are basically the most elite level long travel machines in the world - They are typically 1400 HP and they are pretty big... much more similar to a "small" full-size truck. Weight always kills everything... almost every type of build, you should always be targeting to be as lean as possible. Some of the New 2024 Tacomas have longer wheelbases, more powerful engine... so I could see base model Tacomas getting built into Pre-Runners becoming much more popular in the future. Hope that helps.

@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto Год назад
I am actually in the process of this right now... I am timing the shock rebuild at the same time I am doing a big electrical refresh... and I coordinate with the shop I send it to so they are ready for them when they get the shocks to rebuild so they are only out for about 10 - 12 days including two way shipping.... @OutdoorAuto

I have done a few things with Tundras, if you add a little weight I like Toytec’s Add a leaf kit, Old man Emu had a heavy duty leaf pack called the Dakar springs for the Tundra that was good but has had stock constraints… the best thing to do is weigh your truck at a cat scale with a full tank of gas and fully loaded with your gear and then get a custom Deaver leaf pack made for your weight.

@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 5 месяцев назад
Overlanding a Long Travel build is honestly pretty nice when you are off-road... on the HWY it can be a bit more work and take getting used to because a lot of times you don't have sway bars. You also need to be a lot more conscious of weight and build design... an over weight long travel truck is just a huge waste of money.

What spring rate did you go with (650 or 700)? Are those 14 or 16in coils?
@OutdoorAuto
@OutdoorAuto 4 месяца назад
I actually just upgraded the shocks when I did the rebuild on the front end. I’m Running a dual spring coil over. Top spring is 500 lbs, and 4 inches. Lower spring is 800 lbs and 18 inches. This gives me a very plush feeling 3 inches of travel that rates at 307 lbs and then once the Cross Over ring is engaged it steps up to the full 800… so far it is working great… still making adjustments to dial it in.

I dont think so... back in the day almost all the prerunners were 2WD so a lot of old timers swear buy it... but if you watch the pros... for example in the Baja 1000.... they abandoned 2WD went to 4WD and then actually went to AWD. It is hard to argue with their results. I don't have a locker... I Just run a Auburn LSD in the rear and leave it in 4-high off-road.... work great.
@jeremiahsk8nsurf174

It is worth it. 4wd cv axles tend to disconnect and limit travel. At the end of the day, you can get through anything with speed and if you have great suspension, you can get through anything. For instance, I have a 2wd w/e locker and power through everything.

One of my companies happens to be an off-road tour company in Baja... so the truck works pretty well for that, and tax write-offs.
