Billy, this is the way I was taught, by a man who learned from a voyager. We worked the root a little different. We rake the root over a pole to make a three strand twine. The twine gets hand rubbed with pine and cedar resin softened with turpentine. We paint the whole thing with hot clear resin, and turpentine.

That was seriously awesome. Honestly I'm pretty surprised the bark doesn't split along the grain, and let you fall through. Obviously the trip you took, proves that wrong. I'll really have to watch more of your channel 🙂🙂

I have build a canvas canoe looked like yours. It was a good learning practice for me. Of course it was impossible to stay upright. I had to put so much ballast. Second canoe was much better. Trail and error is the best way to learn for some of us I guest.

Thanks for sharing! Great job! Very interesting to see your work with spruce. Since birch is the best material, there isn't many videos of spruce-canoebuilding. But I gather your canoe didn't float very well, since you chose not to show how it worked in water. Don't feel bad about that. I'm sure you have drawn valuable conclusions from it. We would love to hear what you learned, and hope that you post another video that shows how both of your canoes works in water, and your analysis of what one might do differently.

That bark is so much heavier then birch they had to put those pitifully skinny ribs in it with no decent framing, or any planking in the bottom just to make it light enough to carry. It may take twice as long to make a brich bark canoe, but the end result is a much better canoe.

Its unfortunate that the tree had to fall to make the canoe, but then again stripping the bark while keeping the tree alive is a very gentle and difficult process.

Probably because the hull was so misshapen that the boat handled poorly if they could keep it upright at all.

It is interesting what may be done from mother's nature raw materials. The mathematics of such design is interesting, It is not possible to make a complex curve from a flat sheet as only cones and cylinders many be formed from a flat sheet. The wider the canoe the more difficult it becomes as basically the base is a sinusoidal form and when the flat sheet is folded around it there will be pleats near the gunwales and so folds and darts need to be introduced so that the bark will fit the perimeter of the gunwales. Making a narrow canoe will ease this "geometry" if one whole sheet is used, but a wider canoe would need more folds to get rid of the creases near the gunwales. I feel this canoe is unstable and needs ballast to hold it right, unless an outrigger is meant to be fitted. The workmanship is good showing all the ideas that our forefathers used with the little they had. Nice video, It is self explaining .
@AaronHendu

So is birch bark preferable to spruce if available? Also, what is bear grease? Is is created from bear fat, or some other part?
@BillyRiouxAdventurer
@BillyRiouxAdventurer 7 лет назад
Birch bark is way stronger than spruce because of the direction of the grain. Bear grease is bear melted fat. Thanks for watching!
@AaronHendu
@AaronHendu 7 лет назад
Thanks very much for the video and the reply! I have been wanting to build something this summer, not a bark canoe necessarily, something smaller...but I would like to build a traditional birch bark canoe one day, with a few friends or something hopefully, and take it for a long trip somewhere...would be cool to do a great length of the St Lawrence. I used to do a lot of canoe when I was younger, longest trips were usually around 3-4 full days of paddling though, and fairly calm most of the time. I did shoot a 12' dam though, and some fairly long stretches of rapids, and got fairly good. To this day have never tipped lol I literally was forced to read all sorts of canoeing books by my Dad before we went out, so when he shouted commands at me I knew what to do...now I can handle a canoe real well, playing in the eddies in rapids and also got some experience in a kayak last summer. I still largely prefer the canoe to a kayak though, the extra space for gear and to move, and I am not fond of paddle style in a kayak, even if it's more efficient...anyway...I am just rambling...I guess I just wanted to say I love canoeing and hope to actually build something like this some day soon!
