Hi Lou, thanks for showing your Long Yellow tree from Vito. To me, what I can see as the most distinguishing attribute from the fig commonly know as YLN would be the predominance of long stems and the fruit has more of a tear drop shape. I have noticed a few long stems and some leaves without fingers on the YLN I grow. I’d really like to see a couple fruit cut open when they ripen.
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
Yes, Tom, you are right in pointing out the difference in the fig shape and, of course, in my video I tried pointing out the very long stems of Long Yellow. My Yellow long Neck has shorter stems, but remember, my Long Yellow is a first year fig and it may require another year or two for me to draw a final conclusion. Also, I'd like to emphasize the abundance of single lobed (heart shaped) leaves on Long Yellow, which are in sharp contrast to my Yellow Long Neck. I confirmed this distinguishing leaf pattern with Vito. To be sure, these two varieties of Honey Figs are very close in many important traits, in deed. It might even be possible that one of them is a sport (a slight variation) of the other. To your point, I fully intend to make a short video of the soon to be fully ripe figs as soon as they are available. Time will tell! Thanks for your response. Lou Monti

A bit of an update. The interior of Long Yellow is identical to YELLOW LONG NECK. I have a video showing the interior of L.Y., and several videos showing the interior of YLN and Golden Riverside, also. Try...FIG FEAST, and try the video titled...A HAND FULL OF GOODIES. YELLOW LONG NECK, is the same exact fig as Ben's Golden Riverside, now called Golden Rainbow. My opinion, for what it's worth, but personally, I'm entirely certain. I am long familiar with YELLOW LONG NECK, for some 20 years and the person that introduced it to the fig community was a personal acquaintance of mine. I have grown a confirmed specimen of Golden Riverside, too, side by side, and they are one and the same. LONG YELLOW is very closely related to Yellow Longneck, and in my opinion it could be a sport of it. I have videos on that subject if you care to watch them. Regards from, Lou Monti

Only in a container, for sure! I should add that it's not my favorite Honey fig, not by a long shot! None of the trees in this video are. Additionally, there are many other better figs of all types, than any of the ones discussed here. My person opinion. Good luck! Lou Monti

Hello Lou, thank you for new videos! Could you add what are your thoughts regarding Battaglia Green versus Adriatic JH (in comparing earliness, taste, size)?
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
Yes, of course! I would be happy to give my opinion and here it is. All Adriatics are very close to one another in overall lateness and taste!!! Do not be swept up in any marketing craze for any one Adriatic or another!!! Having said that, just like the many Mount Etna types, there are slight differences between them. I have had an Adriatic fig for over half a century in my family. My uncle brought it over from Italy around 65 or 70 years ago, maybe more, from the mountains of Teramo. We never knew it's exact identity, but it was very much like Strawberry Verte, which I grew for a number of years long ago. It's taste was slightly more tangy and it did produce a fair number of Breba some years, not a common trait of the Adriatic family of figs. Therefore, I kept it through the years and have not replaced it with any other, permanently. I also have Adriatic JH, as well as Battaglia Green. Both are quite similar and on a practical basis, perform equally well. However, my Adriatic JH is fully in ground, in Zone 7-B, while my Battaglia Green is potted in 7-A, and enjoys periods in the greenhouse, as well. They are quite alike, not withstanding, and I would suspect that they, like all of the Adriatics, would perform similarly if grown in identical conditions. To be on the safe side, I can tell you from three years of personal experience that my Battaglia Green is an incredibly delicious and productive cultivar! However, I would not agree that it is superior in taste to my uncles Strawberry Verte, which in ground, is one of the tastiest figs I've ever enjoyed. Kind regards! Lou Monti

Do you net all your trees before you leave for vacation if it’s fruiting season?
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 3 месяца назад
Hi, there. I generally practice netting regularly if I'm able to maintain a manageable size. That's not always possible, so I've been known to net certain parts or branches of a tree during the harvest. I, personally, find it extremely difficult to leave my trees during the harvest. I do my very best to avoid it whenever possible. It's not always possible, and our son, or perhaps a deserving friend, will take over when it's not. Thanks for watching. Lou Monti

Ok so Long Yellow grow faster than YLN and RGR, but what do you think about their taste? And which one you think is more productive? Would you recommend one of them over the other one?
@loumonti10

They all grow vigorously and all have a long hang time, Dustin, I did performed a taste test yesterday and I will release the video later today or tomorrow. I wanted to wait until the Long Yellow was thoroughly ripe. Regards! Lou Monti

These videos are always helpful! I also live in South Jersey, and I am looking to add a new variety to my collection. If you could give your opinion, would you recommend Yellow Long Neck or Long Yellow?
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
I will answer you truthfully and to the best of my knowledge, Nick. In the North East, New Jersey, etc, do not waste your time attempting to grow Yellow Long Neck in the ground. Not in 7-A and not in 7-B! It had to great a tendency to absorb water and the eye becomes open, it loses flavor, and becomes subject to spoilage! It is also not a Winter hardy fig. If grown in a fabric (fabric is best) container, and if you have a garage or someplace to place it out of the rain during inclement weather conditions, then, yes. Yellow Long Neck can be successful grown in a container in the North East. You can view my video...Beauty and The Beast. Good luck! Lou Monti

Lou, I really value your opinions regarding my fig choices. I am new to fig growing this year, and already have 8 varieties. I would love to get either a cutting or fig tree of yellow long. Do you know of any source for this fig variety? I’ve been looking but have not found anything. Thank you once again for all the great info you’ve been posting on these videos!
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
Hi, Ann. The truth is that too often this variety has been wrongfully sold as another by mistake, and visa versa! Not many growers have true long Yellow and it often turns out that they, too, were sold Yellow Long Neck, for example, by mistake, or some other variety. I recieved mine from a close friend that once made a small sensation by bringing his favorite figs to one of the annual fig festivals. He was later visited by a competent authority, for whom I have a great deal of respect. During his visit, he confirmed the uniqueness and note worth favorable characteristic traits of this very interesting cultivar! According, there is no doubt that I acquired the true Long Yellow. I did so because I was aware of the fact that these four varieties, in some ways similar, Honey figs, needed clarification for the fig community. If you are fortunate enough to acquire this variety, my advise is to make sure that it came from a reliable sourse! I might contact several reliable growers, that I am certain have true Long Yellow, to see if they will authorize me to recommend them. Kind regards, and good luck! Lou Monti

Lou, thank you so much! I hope that they will let me purchase this wonderful variety of fig tree. I live in Birmingham, Alabama, and I am sure this variety would do really well here. I had watched hours of videos regarding Golden Rainbow, Yellow Long, and UC Golden Riverside before I determined I would get Golden Riverside initially. But, I would love to have Long Yellow since it is such an outstanding variety! Thank you once again for helping me to clarify all of the mixed up info I got regarding these varieties!

Lou did you ever think about grafting black Madeira and i258?
@loumonti10
@loumonti10 4 года назад
This is an enormous subject! I don't think that I should comment because it would be impossible to explain my position on grafting fig trees, especially in the North East. Certainly it can be useful here, but I think that it's far more useful in better climate zones. Personally, I like an uncomplicated fig tree (easy to keep track of) growing on it's own rootstock here in New Jersey. Having said that, I do have a healthy, grafted Black Madeira that's doing quite nicely on a seedless Kadota root stock. Take care! Lou Monti

Lou Monti's Figs very interesting 🤔 love your intake on grafting these types of trees. I think your right it’s better to have the tree to have in it’s full root stock but as a experiment once I fully mature my black Madeira and i258 I will give it a try. I just like to see the outcome of it. I will let you know Lou. Anyways, have a wonderful summer and happy figgin!! 😆
