Hey, Ben! Love your videos, thanks for making them! I hope you will delve into the rocker, tail and nose, in a little more detail. When you say more or less rocker…how much? I’d love to see you stick a straight edge on your boards so we could see the comparison readily. Thanks again! Doug , Florida USA. Generally crappy beach break.

It would really help if you could mention the dimensions of your boards, not just the length, but O/A width, Nose width, Tail width, how much rocker at nose and tail.

I appreciate you taking the time for these videos but I'm going to have to disagree with having more rocker for beach break because it really depends on the beach, your beach break looks like it's lined up and almost perfect, now on the East Coast here in Wrightsville Beach we have close out sections we have to beat and there's no way you're going to do that with a rockered out board, we need fast flat boards in our beach break just a fyi for anyone on the East Coast thinking about buying a longboard this man is on the west coast where they actually have good waves not a east coast buying tip but I do agree have some tail kick! 🙂 you're welcome hopefully saved y'all 1k

Interesting comment... I'm thinking of buying my first longboard, and was after hplb with nose riding ability. Let say harley ingleby hi4 9'1, or similar. I also surf a sometime crappy beach break with close out, and I thought that rocker would help for those late take off we always have to do. But I might have taken the problem upsidedown... I understand your idea of flat rocker to take off earlier and escape the closing sections. It makes sense. So now I'm lost 😅 I don't know what to buy... 🙈 What do you think about Thunderbolt special T 9' ?

@@danielbarbieri8199 Sorry bud just saw this comment.. I'd say if you're surfing beach break close outs which are normally 4 to 8 second waves lol get a super fast board which in the longboard world means flat! Add some moderate tail kick and you have yourself a eastcoast wave machine 🤘

Hi Ben , any advice on dimensions for the board? Thanks again for a great video
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 2 года назад
Hey! Yeah absolutely, for a log id never go below 23 for width, I ride 23 and 1/4 which I think is perfect. Depending on what you want in your board, for logs I call 9’4 a great length and I’ll go up to 9’6 for a heavy noserider board. Anything above that feels a bit much but for anyone at or over 100kg I think the 9’6 to 9’8 mark to be pretty reasonable. As for rails I ride 2 and 7/8 , I love thinner refined rails even for logs as they cut through the water much nicer. If I was recommending dimensions to work off I’d go 9’4, 23 1/4 and 2 7/8 then tweak other aspects such as where the wide point sits, tail type (diamond, square, pin) and rocker/kick. It’s all based on preference though so other people may have different preferences, from my experience that’s the template I like to work off though. You can look at a great guide for board size here as well 🤙 any other questions on this or anything else please let me know! Yewww 🤙🤙🙏 www.surfertoday.com/board-size-chart/surf

Love your new log, and you rock her pretty good Ben. Give your opinion on bottom contours. fin sizes and shapes Give us some advice on best bottom contours for beginners seeking the nose, and did you change your new logs contours? are you considering it for one in the quever ? Double concaves on logs ? What about that nose shape ? little pointy or round ? what diffenrences will that give you ? Great channel, keep them rolling, and your quitar is spot-on.
@BenConsidine

So much here to go into! I love it, I'm not very well versed on bottom contours so I'm looking to educate myself further here! Nothing new with respect to bottom contours on the new log, and has the single nose concave but only slight. I like nose shape a bit rounder as it provides a larger platform to steer from the nose/availability for nose tricks as well, a pointy nose will slide you more critical in the hook for nose rides though! Great feeling Really appreciate the kind words, if there's anything else you'd like to see please let me know,. hope you're getting waves!!! yewww!

Think the McTavish Beatnik is a gread board to start, with this V in the tail, flat, plus concave in the nose….

Great surfing on the new board Ben, what comp are you doing in New Zealand? Awesome comments regarding the rocker for beach break versus point, really good to know! For a intermediate surfer who's trying to improve noseriding, should I look for a board with wider tail block, round 50/50 versus pinched in refined rails for more hold? Have a 9'0 Firewire wingnut but find the tail is really good for turns but not as stable for nose rides. Mainly surf beachbreak waves, and we have a right hand point here in Gisborne but not same quality as Noosa. Cheers!

G’day Phil, thanks heaps! I will be competing in the Single fin mingle in May 🤙 Yeah I find the rocker is a super important thing to consider depending on what conditions you’re surfing For a really reliable noserider, I think having a wider tail block is key, but I actually prefer thinner refined rails for nose riding as well, I find if the rails are too rounded and thick then the board has more wobble and is less engaged with the wave. The main thing I’d be looking for is a wide tail block and enough kick in the tail as well I hope that makes sense, thanks for the support! Yewww 🤙🤙

As I’m getting to the nose, sometimes I start to sink. Although, I feel like I am in the perfect part of the wave (right in the pocket). Any suggestions on what to change or what else could be causing that problem??
@BenConsidine
@BenConsidine 2 года назад
Difficult to say exactly what the problem would be, but if we are nosediving it will just be meaning that the board will be dropping down the face of the wave too much or we are coming out of the critical section of the wave a bit too far. Quite often this can happen if we don’t get to the nose quickly enough and then we fall out of place by the time we get to the nose, or oftentimes it can also feel like we’re in the right spot but we’re just a little out of place. What I would encourage is to get some film if you can and just see where your placement is. You can also trial placing yourself higher up on the wave than you think you should be, which if you’re placing yourself a bit low that will help, you can also try going to the nose and coming straight off so you don’t nosedive, and then bit by bit elongate the time spent on the nose and just become really aware of how it feels when the board is going to Pearl so you know exactly when to come off the nose ride. I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions 🤙🤙

@@BenConsidine Hi Ben, great video as always and thanks for sharing the dimensions of this board! Do you mind telling us how much you weigh? Personally I weigh 165lbs/75kg and have been surfing mainly a 9’ 4 x 22 3/4 x 3 1/8 and am craving getting down to 2 7/8 and wider around 23 1/2 on my next board fora stable but less “corky” on top of the water feel. Just curious about the amount of overall flotation you prefer, thanks :)
