I hate people like that. They don't listen to what others have to say, they make up their own rules and they DO NOT prove that what you are doing is wrong. I call abuse of your authority on those police officers

The cops can't stop you riding on the road because under the NZ transportation act skateboards and that includes longboards are classed as wheeled recreational vehicles which means they can be used on the roads just like a bicycle which is also classed as a wheeled recreational vehicle

Longboarders can slow down really fast. It's called Sliding.

In the U.S a police officer has to by law state their name and badge number if someone asks. I didn't think that'd be different anywhere else.

That officer was just being discriminatory towards these boarders. It is just as legal to skate as it is to cycle on the street as long as you aren't causing problems for others using the roads as well, and yielding the right of way. From the video, there were no cars behind you waiting on you, nor were you taking up both lanes making it dangerous for cars on the other side...Legally, you guys were all good to ride.

I think police officers should be able to state which exact law the accused broke and how they broke it

Look, I respect cops, but when he says "How is it obstructing" and the cop responds "Cause it is" is real funny to me. It like a parent saying don't do this because you shouldn't.

Even if somehow they were doing something illegal the cops could have handled it a lot better they just decided to act like pricks from the very beginning.

Legally you are allowed to record police when they confront you, so I love it when he tried to grab your camera and I also liked how he didn't provide his name which he is required to do by law if you were to ask which you did.

Legally the Police officer is incorrect. The NZTA website says "Skateboards and scooters are legally defined as wheeled recreational devices. Bicycles with wheels less than 355mm are also included. While usually powered by foot or gravity they can be fitted with motors up to 300 watts. If you do fit a motor, your 'device' then becomes a motor vehicle, which means you must register and license it. It also means that you'll need a driver licence to use it. Using your wheeled recreational device While you may need a driver licence to operate a motorised wheeled recreational device, they are not required to have a warrant of fitness or registration. But there are requirements for where and how you can use them: On the road, you must keep as close as possible to the edge of the roadway. On the footpath: you must ride carefully and be considerate of others on the footpath you must not ride at speeds that put other footpath users at risk you must give way to pedestrians and drivers of mobility vehicles."

I hate this type of thing soo much. I live in a town that is filled with drugs, vandalism, peoples houses occasionally getting burnt down, brake in's, and yet i get yelled at for holding a longboard. And yes i have been yelled at for literally only holding a longboard. And for sliding my fingers across a fence at the baseball field in the park near my house. Police could be putting their efforts towards much more serious causes yet still waste time to yell at innocent people...

We'll I guess if you don't know what long boarders are actually capable of people can mistake them for dangerous I guess. Also if you skateboard and a cop drives by there gonna stop and see what's up. In the community skateboarders have a profile of being bad. And old people hate them the most. So this video doesn't surprise me. But also sweet run. U guys went pretty fast.

Did you file a complaint to the police department/ and goverment official where you can properly report this what has happened?

I've only done this once in my entire life, it's the scariest feeling in the world. I do recommend doing this once you've grown comfortable riding your longboard down hills and on roads with traffic.

I have a question for you skaters here please answer honestly, a bicycle has brakes and if they need to can stop very quickly (comparable to a car) so let's say they are flying down the hill at 80ish and see some cars stopped, i know from experience that they will be able to stop also. What will all of these longboards in the middle of the road do?

It's not against the law to skate there. But if you guys memorized the exact law and what it says I'm sure it would be much more helpful.

geez at least they weren't boy racing and doing burnouts!. They seemed like sensible young boys, who were wearing all the correct protective gear, following the rules of the road, not acting like idiots or harming other drivers!. no different to cyclists imo.

What was the end result? In the future, ask am I being legally detained or am I free to go. Just keep giving them that response for every question they ask you. Then when they ask for your details, tell them am I legally required to give it you. If they say yes, ask them, what am I being charged with. When they ask you a question respond with, I don't answer questions.

Theres many ways to stop a longboard you can slide or simply put your foot down or install longboard breaks

Yo, you should've stood right in front and behind their squad car and waited until they answered your questions. You shouldn't have listened to them telling you to leave since they had no legal reason.

I don't know what the law is in New Zealand, but here in Canada you have to supply your name and badge number to anyone who asks. Ironically, he was the only one here breaking the law.

I was once stopped by a cop that had received a complaint about me skating. He apologized and asked politely to move somewhere else to keep the resident happy. So I did, if only all cops were this nice then we wouldn't have so much hate for them. Since it's New Zealand law that skateboards are legal on the road then they had no right to threaten arrest but they have the right to ask you to move and similarly you have the right to stay but it's always better to move if asked imo.

I would have gone straight up that hill, pulled out my phone, looked up the high way code, then go down.

Can they quickly stop if they need to? I know they can do those board slides but will that slow them down quick enough if a car were to break infront of them?

in the USA they would have been run off the road by the cops and the shot.

The only problem with the longboarders is that it seems that they are going too slow and could be holding up traffic. I'm not sure if its a 80km/h zone but they look like they could hold up traffic. Also they shouldn't be longboarding in the middle. They should be moving closer to the sides like cyclist.

I think they were concerned for your safety roads are dangerous places . plenty of videos on here of dudes longboarding into cars and trucks check them out . lots of motorcyclists and cyclists brain dead in beds and wheel chairs living the dream . Go hard .

you cant run a for wheel vehicle without registration on legal road, that's the law, if you find an abandoned road you can drive without problems, but this is almost impossible

we have follow cars to stop that from happening, also the double yellow lines stop cars from overtaking , so that will not happen. We also tend to go the speed limit which will reduce the chances of this happening. Also we as safety conscious riders will not use an ipod on an open road or when skating with others because we know we need to be aware of our surroundings and others on the road. I personally respect cops and so do my peers as we understand they are only doing their job.

what boards do you guys have

It's funny when I was buying my first longboard the owner of the store was explaining the exact same thing to me about how skaters are no different from cyclists and he could shut down a longboard faster than a cyclist.

I don't think this video was posted for people to start hating on cops. The cops are just doing their job. I think he uploaded this for showing his love for longboarding. It doesn't have to be about "cops taking away our rights"

I carry around a copy of the law that says we can use the roads. I suggest you do the same gets cops to leave you alone

The rider will rarely change a cop's opinion by an argument, especially from someone with an attitude that they know more than the cop, maybe. The cop is probably right (imo), but it is an interesting point. I love to see downhill Longboard riding, but I could see that there would be complaints about noise from rolling and sliding and safety concerns from neighbors living on the street. I think the cop mentioned that. I wonder what the law the cop will charge the rider with. The rider should take the ticket and appear in court and appeal the cop's ticket. The judge will settle the case and make a decision on who is right or wrong. Also, bring up an issue that the law essentially discriminates against Longboarder's by not having any roads to legally ride on.

I've seen this in many downhill long boarding videos but I havent done any downhill with friends but why do they push on each others backs

I don't believe you because at new years I was driving a mercedes 511 (Large van) in mt maunganui and there were some longboarders coming down a hill behind me quite quickly and I stopped to turn right (another car coming up the road on the other side) and 1 went under my van and got injured and another flew into a garden and broke his board, I don't think they knew that longboards come with brakes?

never once, have i heard of something like this happening in Denmark. the police once overtook me in a patrol car while i was on the middle of the road. they didn't even care. Police in Denmark are such nice people :)))

Someone needs to get a cop longboarding and then cops will stop cops and cops will explain to cops that cops trying to arrest people because they are cops isn't a legal thing to do for cops even though they're cops.
