If anyone is interested Kevin Hicks himslef runs a youtube channel called thehistorysquad. Love this dear man to death and his enthusiasm for medieval history.
The Welsh British archers in 100 years war had the shits they fort without trousers the arrows were stuck in the ground in rows at Agincourt there were 6,000 archers every one could shoot 10 arrow a minute,
I know lol it's great. His whole "over it" attitude and nonchalant way of describing things makes the history he's teaching and the presentation he's trying to... well.. present far more accessible, easy to listen to and take in. When your listening to someone who's taking everything extremely seriously and talking to you like they're going to test you later you don't want to listen to them. The way Kevin masterfully dictates is a true skill and a rare trate in presenters. I admire him greatly for it. You should check out his new RU-vid channel (thehistorysquad). I'm not affiliated with them or anything. I'm just a trucker from Canada (which incidentally is where Kevin lives now lol) who admires this great man.
@@dylanmcwhirter9844 that's hilarious. I'm not directly from Nova Scotia because I was born in PEI but most of my childhood and teen years were in Nova Scotia. Specifically Yarmouth and Wolfville. To your question. Kevin's bow is made of yew. You're not going to find that in Nova Scotia but you are going to find an overabundance of sugar maple. It's not the best wood in the world for a bow but it's the best you'll find in NS. Make sure you seal your ends when cutting the stave though. Sugar maple tends to lose its moisture extremely fast. Good luck!
The Fractured But Whole not really you can do things without math. Simple math sure but at a certain point the teachers are just throwing shit at the wall
I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Hicks on the phone in 1999 . He called me up and requested I build a Native American “pony bow” For him and I did . That and 6 custom arrows. That was a highlight of my bow making career.
@@josephinebennington7247 Yeah he actually moved to NY. There was a news article put out about him recently: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EaxBAnyDywU.html
Imagine a government which created a school system where teachers were allowed to teach, enthusiastically, topics they found interesting. The reality is very very different.
knightshousegames my American history teacher brought a gun to school lol, and I was sitting right by his desk while he took it out and cocked it lmao. Luckily it was child locked so it was safe xD
you don't have to imagine- I had several throughout my time in secondary school. Even they couldn't make you listen if you had no interest in the subject whatsoever (Or where looking to not listen). The problem is not just with crappy teachers who think that being jovial in the presence of children somehow inspires juvenile delinquency (They certainly exist) but also with a general trend towards anti-intellectualism. We live in a culture where lots of adults still refuse to believe anything they can't "see with their own eyes"- like viruses- and think that experts who disagree with them are part of a conspiracy to stop them being "free". It isn't just the schools that fail children, it's also their parents
I would plan a trip to England just to hear this in person. It’s wonderful to see someone passionate about what they do for work or as hobby and you can see it come threw by the way he talks about this and you know he’s put a lot of thought into this over many years I’m sure and it’s seamless and engaging to listen to the way he engages. I love history and like the man said you won’t find much better history then English history. On a side note I can’t tell you how angry 😤 it makes me thinking about someone fire bombing that tree 🌳, What kind of tit would do such a thing? Makes no sense? That someone took the time and put the effort into it just annoys me to no end. That teee can survive for 1000 years threw wind and storms but in a single moment a man could wipe out the history of this tree as of it were never even there and think nothing of it. What joy could be got from the distraction of a thing that is literally living History. At this point in its long long history it’s become much more then just a tree and to want to destroy it with nothing to gain but the pleasure of destroying something beautiful just shows how much longer man has left to go and just the types of people that are all around us. The loss of this tree would be cause to morn.
4:16 "The best target is the arrow sticking out of his head." That's very true; when I shoot and land my first arrow successfully, it becomes the target. Not the gold. The arrow.
yes but they had an actual reason, 100 year war and all that. It wasn`t because they refused to join the coalition of the fucking willing and wage illegal wars. ps EVERYONE hates americans, he`s just joking around here
I mean, the French were the first to recognize the USA as a country, and also sent money, supplies, and weapons to the soldiers to fight the Revolutionary War. I'm a South African living in the USA, so i don't really have a horse in this race, but i always wondered why Americans don't like the French. There were many French students when i studied in Japan, and they could all speak English and Japanese, and were some of the nicest of all the western students. And the French girls were all stunningly beautiful. I know it's a small sample size, but they were really cool.
I've seen a few other vids with Kevin Hicks... Here it appears he is doing much more entertaining than he is worried about accuracy. He is very good. You can see he is barely getting a draw on this bow and just flinging the arrows with a high arc and very little force.
Johannes I wouldn't be surprised if his wife left him, he used to compile lists in his spare time of english defeats and shit like that Truly a complete waste of air.
Entertaining. The sad thing is that, although this was only uploaded 8 years ago, I have no doubt that now he wouldn't be allowed to say many of the things that were amusing.
Kevin Hicks has an amazing RU-vid channel called “History Squad.” I highly recommend you check it out. He covers all sorts of history and is very passionate about it and a lot of fun. He has 105K subscribers so let’s get him up to one million
i hope they didnt stick that wooden fence up to stop people petrol bombing the tree, because i dont know if they know this but cows aren't doing the petrol bombing
I’m afraid that the fence was put up to keep tourists back from the Major Oak, the pressure of thousands of feet was compressing the soil and reducing the water and oxygen getting to the roots to keep the tree alive
Slingshot shooting really helps with ypur archery draw i.e anchor points clean releases and also the way you draw i.e push the bow as you draw the band back is so translatable to archery i live by the sea and practice on oyster shells at 10m and my archery has improved no end whod have thunk ot a ✌✌😂
Good one, beleive it or not this is the most real bit of achery you will see. If you wonder why the loose happens so fast its because on the tips of three fingers, at the knukle crease, is where you are holding anything from 80 to 160lbs which is real set on pulling your arm away from your shoulder. The eye and the fact that you drew the bow to you best pull and for a second had your thumb under your chin, at this position the string was on your lips, you look down your nose at the arrow head and usually this was pretty much on target so let go, or the word was loose, about twelve to forteen arrows a minute, so with an army of archers of say four thousand, you now have a rain storm of arrows that was pretty constant, and the umberella was not much good as on the sunday practice that was law and still is, they were sometimes ordered to shoot clout, which is dropping arrows into a target on the ground from 200 yards, so you are shooting in the air so they rain down on people, by the way, an arrow collects energy on thecway down at 32 foot per second per second so they definitly killed on the way down too, so hifing behind a hill was not the best idea as usually there was a good acher who shoot a marker arrow for everyone else to use as a marker. A wonderfull sport for the whole family, my parents started the biggest achery club in the U.K. just after the war. Archery equipment was not something you could go out and buy so my father a master carpenter made all the equipment himself, according to all the old information he could find ever down to the fleatings on the arrows made from goose feathers which is why they do make a noise as they fly, but like a gun you never hear the one that hits you!!!
the bow of that guy is maximum 60 pounds and hes always just pulling back 2/3 of an arrow. I wouldnt be scared to get shot by this guy at that distance if id be allowed to wear my thick winter coat, yet alone gambeson, yet alone anything made out of metal.
Fantastic history! I never believed that I would hear an Englishman talk true trash about the Lionheart! I am an American by Irish/French ancestry but have always loved my ancestral homelands. Bloody good lesson mate!
This guy is hilarious!! I live in America and we obviously don't have the history Europe has. Our country is only a couple hundred years old but you guys have history dating back thousands of years. It blows my mind.
Yes Sherwood forest was huge went above Barnsdale, Barnsley it is said where John Little was and over 2 hills is Hathersage village in church yard is a long grave of John Little ??? if true And in between Barnsley and Sheffield we have the Loxley Vallie and to the west of Barnsley we have the village Hood Green ?? As he grew older and became ill, he went with Little John to Kirklees Priory near Huddersfield, to be treated by his aunt, the Prioress, but a certain Sir Roger de Doncaster persuaded her to murder her nephew and the Prioress slowly bled Robin to death.??????????????????
