Longer Chess Games #74 How Much Space Can You Give Away In Chess?

In this video, I play a long-play game against my good friend Blair Connell. The game sees me playing the Modern Defence, an opening where Black gives away a lot of space. Will that come back to haunt me!?
Hopefully, you will gain some useful tips. The time limit is 15+10, my aim is to really explain the thought processes behind the moves that I am playing.

You are a true gentleman. You show your losses. You give credit to your opponents. I can not compliment you enough on your conduct. It was a pleasure watching the video.

Best Chess RU-vidr out there. Honest, normal, down to earth and very funny bloke! Not a pretentious, narcissist like Levy or Hikaru.

Very instructive game. Shows the dangers of playing hypermodern openings if they are not played optimally.

Yeah I struggle with them in general

I play the modern myself it seems great opening but you have to struggle in the first few 15 moves if you can do this correctly than rest of game goes smoothly.

Super instructive, you saw all Blair's moves and your countermeasures but just the slightest variation in combinations got through your defence. Beautiful positional setup from Blair too w/ 3 snipers covering the infiltration *chef's kiss*

Following that game with Stockfish... makes me think ... oh, never mind, he's your friend.

Hello everyone. Dear Simon, thank you for sharing this great game, and your knowledge. I loved every bit of this game. By the way, at 40'40, while checking the "computer" on chessCom, I have to tell you Stockfish on lichess doesn't recommand the same moves. Stockfish approved of your move ! Best line, sir ! So, watching you doubting your move because of chessCom's computer was like a mind opener for me. ... by the by, on move 20 Stockfish was screaming : play Knight on f5 ( for black ). But you didn't seem to fancy this move, and I understand your logic too, so what can we say ? Chess is hard. Or as you would put it : "bloody hard". Matthieu

Nice video and it shows if you miss a move it can be all over. You have a great ability to calculate and analyze. If i was better at that id be a stronger player. Cheers

The one move you played quickly in the entire game was Qxh5... So often happens when we're overconfident about the position

Whenever someone even more noob than me asks me what is the best way to learn chess, I tell him/her: go watch GingerGM playing longer games or him doing game analysis, because his educational skills are unmatched on youtube, and also he adds some humor into this, so it is pure pleasure to learn the game from him
