This is a great tutorial. It is always incredibly helpful to have a musical instructor provide the insight of open tuning "secrets" of a given song. Thanks to your video, the guitarist won't have to struggle with trying to learn the song, by ear - and not figuring out the open tuning neccessity. This is one of my favorite songs, and you have saved me countless frustrating hours (perhaps months or days), in developing the arrangement. You must have a very gifted ability to hear the details of the guitar, in order to have determined that he used G tuning in his original arrangement of the song. We are very grateful for the answers provided by instructors like you, who help us RU-vid students. Great Job!
I just now (a year later) noticed a mistake/omission: at the 18:15 mark, I neglected to mention that while playing the descending notes on the D string, the left hand is also maintaining a position on the G string, 5th fret with the pinky. It stays there throughout the passage. So the beginning position of the left hand is XX55X0. It then goes XX45X0, XX35X0, and finishes XX45X0. The picking is as described. Sorry about that.
Conquering the fear of playing in open G tuning is the key to learning this song! After watching you play it, this song is so much easier than in standard tuning. Thanks for the lesson and for opening my mind! 😉 I’ve been asked to play “Longer” for a dear friend’s wedding anniversary. I’m so happy I found your video David❣️
Also, the song ends with the phrases, "I've been in love with you; I am in love with you." Both of those are accompanied as I describe in the video, with the open chord finishing with a final note on the high E string, 5th fret. But the third and last time, after the vocal ends, it is: open A string, open D string, then G 2nd fret sliding up to the 4th fret, and ending on high E string, 5th fret. Play that G2 with your index finger, slide it up to 4, and hold it there while playing E5 with your ring finger. Hope that all makes sense.
You mention an Am 7, but im not hearing it or seeing it I see an Am, and the bridge is not the same shape as you demonstrate. But all In all I figured it out thanks to you.
