Technical reason why this happens - when the nose wheel steering is disconnected the PTU is inhibited until both engines are turned on. Looks like you were starting at a remote stand, so naturally there is no need to have a tug :)

there’s two hydraulic pumps, yellow and green with the PTU being between both of these. Engine 1 powers the green pump, and engine 2 powered the yellow pump. When engine 1 is started first, that then has powered the green pump. which is where the PTU then enables the green system to pressurise the yellow hydraulic system. So basically when you hear “woof woof woof” it’s the PTU enabling the green system to pressurise the yellow as I just said. I am pretty sure that’s all correct info. Maybe someone will correct me if I have missed anything out.

You are correct, as soon as one engine is running and a hydraulic system is pressurised the PTU is activated, think of it not as a pump but as a turbo in a car engine with the green system attached to the inlet side and the yellow system attached to the exhaust side, except that both sides are identical with no dominant side as you would find in a turbo, each side is capable of pressurising the opposite side. If 3000psi is on one side and 0psi on the other the turbo spins due to the differential pressure, but as the pressure increases towards about 2800psi the differential pressure is insufficient to operate the turbo so the dog stops barking, as the pressure subsides at about 2500psi the differential is sufficient to drive the turbo again and the dog barks and the cycle repeats. We had a similar pump system on the DC9 in the system B alternate pump, if my memory is correct we had an involved procedure during our pushback and start up to check all the pumps before taxi which went something like this: Auxiliary pump on 3000psi Engine 1 pump high Engine 2 pump high Alternate pump on System 1 would show 3000psi System 2 would pulse between 2800/2500psi (sound familiar) As the engines were started both systems would go to 3000psi as they were now being supplied by the engine driven pumps During the after start checks the aux and alt pumps were turned off and the engine pumps were turned to low, both systems would drop to 1500psi this meant that the aux and alt pumps were not powering the systems and that the engine pumps worked at both high and low, now all the pumps were switched on and high in preparation for take off. Gota love hydraulics!

These days alot of airlines don't start both engines at the gate / parking. They will start the 2nd on push back or taxi to save on fuel, that's why you hear the PTU equalising the hydronic pressure on the yellow line with the green line (Engine one) hydrolic pressure until its self sufficient.

Fun fact: in the F15, you can hear a similar sound when the JFS start the engine crank and when the first engine crank is done and the gears shift to the other engine. Totally different phenomenon, but similar sound.

This is certainly not the longest. This PTU noise continued from gate to gate (2.5 hours) on an Easyjet flight from Bristol to Rome on 21/10/2018

@@marcorafael312 um what? Just because the PTU is continuing to make that noise does not mean they are only running on one engine. It's just you usually hear it as a passenger when number 2 engine is started before takeoff (or number 1 shutdown after landing) It's definitely unusual to have it making that noise continuously for the whole flight, but not unheard of and is probably indicative of a minor fault with the system equalizing pressure.

Last year I flew on a Bangkok Airways A319. The crew performed a single engine taxi after start up of engine #1 which led to the PTU barking sound go on for about 5 minutes until engine #2 was started a few minutes before take off.

@@PlaneSpottingBerlin Yeah! The 777 300er is an amazing aircraft. It is so large that it rivals even the mighty 747. The fact that it has two massive engines means it consumes less fuel, which is why many airlines are replacing their 747s with the 77W, making it the most popular 777 variant.

Pretty sure my flight on Delta the other day was a little longer.. seemed like at least 2 minutes. The pilot warned us that they were having trouble starting the second engine.

I don't know why but I was on a floght from marrakech to lisbon and even though the sound at the apron was quite short, I started hearing it mid way in the flight and it stayed like that until the end. How come??
