Longest Day Diversions:
Azumas and more
Train Variety on the Newcastle & Carlisle and
Carlisle Station!
21 June 23
Two parts to this one -
First part is along the Newcastle & Carlisle line
Second part is an evening at Carlisle station
Network Rail chose 21st June - the longest day of the year - to undertake Engineering Work on the East Coast Main Line north of Newcastle.
LNER ran Azumas over the Newcastle & Carlisle line and we see some at Brampton, Denton School Crossing, near Gilsland, at Haltwhistle and at Hexham, together with the daily engineer's trains and the regular, frequent passenger trains.
Later, in that evening, I spent a few hours watching the activities at Carlisle Citadel Station.
The freight included three Freightliner intermodals utilising pairs of Class 90s, a Royal Mail train and a Varamis Rail parcels train, the Cement train from Clitheroe and Alcan's tank train from Fort William to North Blyth, operated by GBRf and usually run via the ECML.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.
