The stars on the chimney have a threaded rod that gets screwed into usually an 8"x8" beam that runs the whole length of the building. This secures one end of the house to the other and adds structural support. There usually only found on brick buildings cause as the house settles the brick can tend to lean away from the building. Then the floor joists are anchored to this same beam, so when you see one from the outside you know that's the seperation of the 1st and 2nd floor, or 2nd floor and attic. I only know this cause my brick house is a confederate style house that started being built before the civil war and was finnished after. And most people knowing this much about em wish they didn't. LOL Looks like little leaf is pondering which side of the fence the grass is greener on.....(much like many of us who just keep on hiking)

I think that house is gorgeous and not the least bit creepy. I'd love to live there. I enjoyed rehabbing my house. It takes a special person to rehab very old houses like that, to keep things period specific and enjoy the historic features of the house. I see it has a dirt cellar. That would be one thing I would bring forward in time. The land is breath-taking. ♥

I LIVE about 30 miles from there in Newport News, hope you got to do the ferry ride to Williamsburg va. .

Those old Maytags had a kick start like a motorcycle. Farmers then and now often have to do things in winter and during the growing seasons. They're most busy during planting and harvesting. The off time is how to get ahead. Good Luck, Rick

My hubby says those star looking things on the chimney are connected to rods that hold the chimney to the house. They were probably there when the house was first built, but added later to help secure it.

I believe they had a stable (?) underneath the house. They heated primarily by fireplaces.
