For some reason some of the species are always out wenn its rainy. And i dont think it is a protection mechanism against drowning common in earthworms. If you have a big area of marshland or a meadow with high vegetation it could be a good place to finde those parasites. Best to go on a wet summer morning there will be plenty. You will probably also find some in small creeks in the spring.

I believe that is a horse hair worm which is an endoparasite. It takes over its host. Which is usually a grasshopper/preying mantis or another insect of that sort. It will live there and grow until it is ready to emerge. At that point it will cause its host to jump into water and drown itself. The worm is fairly reliant on being in or around water and can't live long without it.

That is my guess as well. I took invert zoology in college back in the day and we studied many worms... so many worms. It is absolutely wild to see those things come out of crickets and other insects. It is the kind of video that I bet Destin would be both fascinated and appalled by, I know I was lol. Not as bad as the guinea aka match stick worm. Another crazy parasitic worm is the Leucochloridium paradoxum, at least it doesn't infect people though.

Long stringy worm sounds internal parasite alarms to me: if they live by absorbing nutrients from their host through their skin, they need to grow in length rather than diameter, in order to maintain their surface/volume ratio and absorption capabilities. Biology student here: In Germany i heared them being refered to as "wire worms". They are found in small streams and in marshlands. There are differnt species, which are not closer related. I know of the genus "mermis" and "gordios". They are parasites. There are plenty of differnt species with differnt host and intermediate host and alternate hosts. Most known are they in Grasshoppers/Crickets and praying mantis. There are some videos on youtube you should check out.
@gameplayer193
@gameplayer193 2 года назад
Grasshoppers will feed on vegetation and eat some of the larvea. The larvea grows until the Grasshopper dies and falls onto the ground. The then adult worm vanishes in the ground and reproduce and lay new eggs of parasite offspring for the next season. This is the most simple lifecycle, however there are more specialized species with intermediate hosts and behavior altering effects on there hosts (look up praying mantis parasite)

looks like Spinochordodes tellinii, or a hairworm. They live and reproduce in water, where their microscopic larvae are ingested by grasshoppers. The larvae grow inside the grasshopper, where they mildly influence its behavior to seek out bodies of water to jump into to drown, at which point the hairworm leaves the host body to repeat the cycle. Could be wrong, but they can get pretty big, thin, and somewhat yellow-white in color.
