www.monsterchildren.com We sat down with the man and mystery, Mark Gonzales, for what we can confidently say was 10 minutes well spent. Watch Gonz give his most candid interview yet as he chats with Evan Goodfellow while patting a cat.
Gonz is the only person I've heard who at times makes little to no sense and perfect sense simultaneously. He really does seem out of this world, just in an Earthling's body.
I owned four boards in my skating life in the late 80s/early 90s. Vision Gonz, H-Street Danny Way, Real TG Guerrero and the Blind Jason Lee Bible/Gun. My favorite was the Gonz. Love the Gonz.
I never paid much attention to Gonz back in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20... wait a sec, I get it, this dude is awesome, I'm just realizing over the past few weeks. Funny, way back I couldn't get enough Natas (much like now), but I had never really processed how much they were parts of each-other in so many ways. Natas or none, Gonz is some good stuffs.
that's cool I like what he was saying about karate dudes and boxers that would be able to skate, I tend to think the same about dancers like ballerinas and what not
Thank God MG is a skater. He is an artist. His skating is a masterpiece. His art is a skaterpiece. Love it. Remember the the paintpen boards. He is an individual individual. He eats cats.
@infoslinger it’s only a guess, but Stacey probably never liked Gonz for convincing friend Mike V(who also brought Rodney Mullen)to defect to World Industries from Powell, and then a few years later snatched up Guy Mariano to come skate for him at Blind, which started the beginning of the end of Stacey and George’s partnership, while Rocco and World Industries basically shoved it in their face? That had to have bruised Stacey’s ego......which he had a huge one during the height of the Bones Brigade. Perhaps he blamed Gonz for starting all that? Tony Alva also had a rift with Gonz for awhile too, but they’re cool now. He marches to his own tune and never gave a flying eff what people thought of him, especially the big 3 companies at the time who gave Gonz bit parts in their videos at one point or another, but never got the credit he deserved, especially at Vision. He always stayed true to himself and his friends, and never cared much of the business aspect of skateboarding, even though it’s pretty much made him a millionaire today and he barely skates!
Love Gonz and as a Sped teacher I would have loved to work with him. It sounds like an undiagnosed or a learning disability not effectively dealt with: Typical of a lot of kids that are artistic.
yep getting older and not having the muscle and gaining weight,,,makes everything so much differnet and tougher,if you don't stay in top shape......ive lost a lot of skill,,,,but ile always keep skating...I quit once before for like 10 yrs I didn't skate just due to work and being lazy in my late 20s-30s...now in the 40s..i don't want to miss any more time...its too precious to waste....marks YT channels is very inspirational to some of us im sure
+Nancy Nightmare and the Wizard I think a lot of those guys had bad experiences with Stacy back then. I'm sure that you understand, since you are speaking on it, that Stacy more or less OWNED skateboarding circa Mark's formative years... plus, he was like the, "i'm retired from skateboarding, I'm team manager, businessman, artistic director" and I think a lot of people chafed at that. If you listen to interviews with a lot of those young guys like Rudy and Guy and whatnot, they say things like, "if you didn't skate, I wasn't interested in you" That sort of mentality. So you've got this older, now non skating, know-it-all Stacy Peralta that is telling all these guys what they should and shouldn't be doing. Whether or not he was right, they weren't trying to hear that. I'm not Mark or Stacy or any of those guys, so I'm probably wrong, but I think that has a good bit to do with it. Stacy, in those Bones Brigade "best team" days... he thought he hung the moon. People act like Alva was this egomaniac... they both were.
+Nancy Nightmare and the Wizard We'll never know the truth unless Mark says why, but one can assume he didn't treat him well. Maybe money....but Gonz doesn't seem to me like a person who would care about money unless he was being disrespected.
burrowsgod if you didn’t grow up skating in the 80’s and 90’s you’ll never know why, not your fault though go back and watch the videos from those days and you’ll probably have a better understanding.. most definitely watch ‘Video Days’ and then watch the ‘Making of the Blind Video, ‘Video Days’ it will help 🤙🏻😎
The Gonz is basically the incarnation of street skateboarding. Doing crazy tricks at wacky spots, being a joker, unrelentingly creative. I don’t skateboard anymore, but I still look up to this man regarding his attitude towards life and creativity.
