For those history buffs out there, luggage in the early days of our railways here was carried on the roof of enclosed carriages, a possible relic of stagecoach customs. Rails were fitted to prevent items falling off and canvas laid on top in bad weather. The Frith painting of Paddington shows luggage being placed onto broad gauge coaches, unless I am mistaken. The Longleat line hints at safari flavour so all the luggage is conveniently stowed on the roofs as there would not be room to carry it in the coaches. Plus a generous loading gauge to accommodate all trunks, valises and portmanteaux. There you have it.The Railway still operates presently as far as I can ascertain, despite rumours to the contrary.Alistair

It was last August we were there, they only ran the steam on one of the days. I was told they try and run the steam loco on busy days but it depends who is rostered to work as only have a few staff trained on the steam locos.

Please those of you watching this keep in mind that whist the government have exempted heritage and other steam railways from the restrictions related to green policies there may be a problem with coal supplies. Steam locomotives need good quality coal, the best being Anthracite which is classed as a clean fuel. Heritage railways, and by default all steam railways in uk, have been told they will have to import coal in order to keep operating. Apart from the restrictive expense quality is also an issue, in particular for the smaller locomotives, miniature engine's 5in and 7.25 in gauge. Heritage steam are willing to take over and run a suitable coal mine in UK but at this time (2020) are being told by the government this will not be possible.

I used to go on alot of narrow gauge railways alot as a kid in wales

Too cute...did you see the little children as the first locomotive was redirected on the turntable..their eyes were glued on that engine and you could almost feel their wonderment. Isn't it odd (in a good way) that our age of innocence has a train in its midst.

This railway no longer exists. They had one too many accidents. When it was run by enthusiastic volunteers, all was well. It was taken over by the the theme park.Just saying.

A nice video and set up but if you want the real fun of riding a narrow gauge train just come to India and travel to Darjeeling which is situated in the strip of Himalaya you will enjoy a great scenery and you will also see the engineering marvel
