The Midnight Sun Rifle Challenge 2018 was supported by Kahles, A-tec and LRProficiency (hence the logos).
Stage 15, Precision Milling has 5 targets of unknown size at unknown distance. To solve this stage, there is a painted measure stick next to each targets. Red is 100cm or 1000mm tall, yellow is 80 cm or 800 mm tall, white is 60 cm or 600 mm tall. Measure the painted stick in your MRAD scale and the formula TARGET in mm (the painted stick) : MRAD VALUE (your reticle) = RANGE IN METERS.
On this stage, you mainly loose points by running out of time. Work structured. The workstreams you need to solve are find correct target/ measure MRAD value/ calculate range/ solve ballistics/ shoot the target/ transition to next target. With approximately 6 workstreams you per 60 seconds/ per target/ per 2 shots it is easy to run out of time. In workstreams measure MRAD value/ calculate range/ solve ballistics you will find the biggest gains. Aim to solve each of these workstreams in 5 seconds during practice, that should land you with a +30 second margin at this stage.

Excellent stage, and nice camera work, Thomas

Thanks for commenting Jim. Yes, this was rightfully a very popular stage as it tests slightly more than just shooting the target. I really like these kind of stages.

Christmas was ok, all the stressful stuff was done well in advance and the kids seemed to enjoy everything.

Dear Thomas, thank you for your outstanding Videos! I would like to ask one (stupid?) question: What is your routine for physical fitness? You guys run up and down mountains without beeing shaky or out of breath. That´s fantastic! Thank you, best wishes from Berlin.

Location. Where I live the terrain is basically either up or down which means plain walking activates slightly different muscles than walking on flat ground. Due local terrain, I get a lot of "free fitness" from what is essentially daily life. If you are not used to walking up or down, this can be quite hard as you'll be hitting "new" muscles. When I want to get fitter, I simply put on a small backpack and walk around with that. It doesn't look too "off" and significantly increase the workload. When I want to get proper fit (like now, when I am preparing for a chamois hunt), I take slightly heavier backpack and simply use my lunch break to walk up and down the stairs by the fire escape. I'm all about functional fitness and I don't go to a gym to get "cosmetic fitness" or look good at the beach.

You run too much and shoot too little ;) (For outsiders: Me and Streken Vertabrae are friends IRL, so no bullying going on here)

Thomas, could you do a video on how you prepared the data for the BDC? I ( and perhaps others) would like to replicate your system with other calibers. Thank you for the great content.
@THLR

Yes, I will set up a playlist next week with the videos showing the how-to.

I know that feeling, was over in the US hunting with a MOA reticle and I wasn't too sharp on that one even though the principle is the same. We have a 0,7% difference in our answers which means we are both spot on.. In order of appearance, my readings and range estimations would be: Yellow demo (800mm : 2,4 mrad) 333 meters, white (600mm : 2,1 mrad) 286 meters, red (1000mm : 1,8 mrad) 556 meters, yellow (800mm : 3,3 mrad) 242 meters, white (600mm : 1,6 mrad) 375 meters.

@@THLR So why did they require you write down the solution versus just engaging it? To burn time/add difficulty?
@THLR
@THLR 5 лет назад
@@DFOOSKING It depends on when in the match you hit this stage, the targets are small and wrong range setting will cause a miss . I had been awake approximately 30 hours and with that amount of sleep deprivation I did not gamble on remembering 5 distances for the second round of shooting. There is no reward for time on this stage, only a max time limit, so taking chances to save time doesn't make sense if you know your pace is inside the limit. (I finished with almost 50 seconds to spare)

Hey Thomas another great video! What is that yellow calculator you are using??
@THLR

It's a Swedish product called Truemiller. Same construction principle as the old flight calculators, neat product and easy to read vertebrae.no/no/after-the-shot/shooting-aids/truemiller
