If the people worried about how much money you get for these programs thought about the fact that there are No ads at the beginning, end or middle of the episode. It comes through very clearly that you have a gift for teaching and enjoy learning and passing on your knowledge. I enjoy and appreciate the knowledge you share and when you go on these high elevation walks I also look at the way the trees grow and sometimes wonder how they can survive in the soil and weather conditions.

Nick, I personally feel your joy at sharing all this cool geology that Washington in particular has to offer. Just the short bits here and there from your students, past and present, tells me how infectious that love is, not to mention the interest it has stimulated in me whenever I am driving the highways and byways of the Northwest. I'll be driving along and go, "Nick talked about this once." or "I know what that means!" and it is because of you and the guests you have had on these little "snippets of home video" you bring to us. I am glad it is an internal and not an external thing that has prompted these many moments you have shared.

As someone who doesn't live anywhere near there, may I say that the vista appearing at about 12:30 is pretty spectacular, regardless of the color of the rock(s). "I'm getting no money for this…" might be the most positive thing I've heard on RU-vid in the past couple years. The very idea of exploring (and sharing) just for the sake of doing so speaks to my own heart as a teacher (now long retired) who loved his work and his subject, and is now discovering, via these videos, a whole new field of intellectual endeavor.

Ray, do you mean the fine scene / vista where first you see a miniature pine tree (bonsai) right next to the trail...then looking down into the valley there is a huge grove of golden aspen trees and finally, the Stuart Range, in all it's glory?

I for one would not begrudge him a few YT bucks. Equipment costs money. Lot's of Tubers plough it all back into equipment for making better (technically better) videos. If Nick doesn't want to bother with all that, then all strength to him. 👍

Last year (2020), my family and I spent our summer vacation in the PNW. I drove out and my family flew out. Inspired by your Nick at Home and other videos, we visited Smith Rock, spent a day at Mt St Helens, and spent another day hiking around the Goat Rocks Wilderness. When it was time to drive home, I took a route that allowed me to visit many of the places you have shown in your videos. I drove over White’s Pass, drove through the Yakima River Canyon, spent a couple of nights in Ellensburg, checked out the coulees, had Campus U Totem, and and then drove through Idaho to visit COT(F)M. I even visited the Fred Meyer in Yakima. But I forgot to stop at Vindmann’s. 😞 Now I need to visit Lake Chelan, the Wenatchee area, the North Cascades, the Stuart Range, the Kelowna, BC area. They look like such beautiful areas. And I won’t forget to stop at Vindmann’s next time.

After 40 years here in MT, I still miss the Cascades there in Washington, your videos help me remember. Our Rockies are hard to beat, the Absaroka range here is magnificent, but those interior Cascades, the Icicle, MT Stuart and the Teanaway are firmly placed in my memories. Nick, we just want to say how much we enjoy your videos. We discovered your channel by accident when it came up as a recommended video because we watch so much Washington hiking stuff. It was the recent Gary Paull video and, as I mentioned to you, I had worked with him on trails in the '90's. My wife and I are avid hikers, and my wife is ALWAYS looking at rocks while we hike. And bringing them home. And polishing them. But we have little geologic knowledge. So coming upon your excellent video content is now not only extra entertainment but also educational! Thank you and we love you!

Nick, my grandparents owned a farm just west of Indian John hill with a view of Stuart. Tragedy struck when a cooking stovepipe fire ended up burning the farmhouse. They moved the large family to South Cle Elum. Aunt and uncle went to CWU back in the early 60s and had long teaching careers, now retired. Ive lived in Utah for 28 years now but I want to thank you for this trip and the views of Stuart, the trail, the larch, the snags, and yes even the rocks. Love your channel! Thanks again. BTW my all time favorite hike in WA is Ingalls lake. Also from the backside to the lakes for a fishing trip.

Nick, thank you for bringing back memories. Not of Longs Pass but of Ingalls Pass, which was my lifetime favorite hike. We would do Ingalls as a day hike most of the time, except for the trip we went across the valley and then down Ingalls creek to where we had a car parked just off the Blewtt Pass highway. But the day hikes to Ingalls Pass were the first hike for each of my 3 daughters that they would walk most of the way. Lunch and nap time for the youngest was just over the pass in the meadow. Then back the way we came. There was of course a toddler back pack for their father to carry them when their legs wore out. These are happy memories now that my heart trouble and cancer treatments prevent me from doing such adventures.

173 comments when I read them all, nice to see a good crowd enjoying the virtual hike also... that many green rocks impressive... the rain shadow hikes do show the bones of the ridges...I am on the wet side... I do get to see some of the places my little brother goes to maintain trail on the wet side...can't see nearly as far as up where you get.... I still enjoy your reactions to people trying to give you stuff... one of the best things from the "Nick at Home" livestreams was the interactions... I was looking at phones, my little LG TracFone is going to lose it's 3G network soon... and I like Samsung tablets... so was looking at smart phones... noticed some have the option to add 1 terabyte SD cards... and I was interviewed by a RU-vidr who uses several phones to record with some he got used just to use as cameras, where he would later edit them together from best footage... It might affect what I pick for a 5G network phone... was surprised by what choices I have... been enjoying you for years.

As far as making money on RU-vid, you don’t start making any money until you get 10000 subscribers! So anyone who is saying thing about money are misinformed period, there are so many post on RU-vid about money someone is making that are just false. I met you many years ago when you were giving Community Talks and your enthusiasm was contagious. I for one am glad you are willing to take the time out of your personal time to make these videos. In all the years I have been teaching Sunday School, I found that the one in the classroom who learns the most ... is the teacher. We have to learn what we are going to teach, and we go over the material several times in order to become well versed. Then we present the material in a way that we hope will stick in the minds of those in the class. And, if we are lucky, we get to answer questions about the material. Is it any wonder that we teachers learn the most?

The casual talk is fine, it gives us a chance to look around and come up with our own observations. For those of us late to geology, you are bringing us to places we might never get to, at a depth we didn't dream of in a boring 70s high school class. Now we have so many more tools, and I am grateful you use them with us new/old students.

There are those who see channels with thousands of views and think they are doing it for the money. But, as I've met some of them, and followed others that have been at this a long time, most have started as you have, from a love of sharing experiences and teaching others about what they know of the world. That's a genuine reason for doing what you do, and I (and, I suspect, a few others) appreciate that you are doing this for all the right reasons. I live in Ohio, and, at 65 and living on social security (for the most part,) don't see a trip to the PNW in my future. So, yes, I'm grateful that you enjoy doing what you do so much that you're willing to share, and hope that your PBS show goes national, and you get a bigger budget, so you can continue to do this for a long time.

what an amazing view from the top!!! I would so love to have a small sample of that serpentinite.. such a neat looking rock, and its history makes it all the more interesting. Stay safe! We all love you, too! And a special shout out to Liz for making the Rosemary bread for you. =) (and for being so patient about all this video stuff!)

I’m embroidering while watching this, so this sort of low-key presentation is great. A walk in the mountains with a but of intelligent commentary!

I've had my own blog for years and make no money, just because I've seen the commercial imperative spoil virtually everything else from a creative perspective. Everything changes when you have advertising overlords, and never for the better. We totally understand what you get out of this and why. Keep it ad-free, as long as you can be bothered. Just do what you want; it's the greatest privilege in the world to have that freedom.
