The mail is a reproduction of armor found at Vendel and Valsgärde (6th to mid 7th century), although made of steel instead of iron. Ironically nowadays iron materials are relatively expensive, compared to steel.
This is where the maker of this test piece got the rings: www.capapie.co....
The weapons used in this test:
1.) Langes Messer by Nielo Swords
ww4.aitsafe.com...
2.) Roman gladius (mid 1990s model) from Raven Armoury
www.raven-armou...
3.) Type XVIIIb longsword by Lockwood (dedicated thrusting blade)
ww4.aitsafe.com...
4.) Spear point by Baltimore Knife & Sword (BKS)
imakeswords.com...
5.) Rondel dagger with triangular spike blade
ww4.aitsafe.com...

Stainless has one simple issue, it's brittle. Hard, yes, but it cracks where as high carbon steel won't. Even hardened high carbon skipping the tempering is tougher than stainless in that regard.

Pure circunstancial speculation: in a dire situation, if my sword gets stuck on my opponent, even it the actual wound is 2 or 1cm deep only, wouldn't ig make him awkward to have it there? In the time he my try to counter attack or even remove the stuck sword one could go to ringen and/or use a backup weapon like a dagged.

what amazes me is that these are premeditated attacks with plenty of time to prepare and aim and the mail still did pretty damn well. in the heat of battle where split seconds make a difference i wouldn't mind a layer of that

I don't really its necessary to go though to incapacitate someone with a stab like that, there is no doubt it would hurt like hell, maybe even more than the impact from a cut since the point of contact is so small. people seem to think that plate was used to protect against cuts, but if you think about it, you can't cut through mail and ganbersom anyway, so the plate will be there to protect against thrusts and arrows, and in my opinion, a just as important characteristics is that it can spread the energy from impacts though the plate, so you would feel nothing from a impact.
@autismisuncontrollable4925
@autismisuncontrollable4925 7 лет назад
It would hurt, BUT during a battle, when your pumped full of adrenaline, you would barely feel it. (except for the spear, that would hurt A LOT)

A hard enough thrust, such as the one with the gladius, to the liver would be likely fatal, even without actually going through the mail; the sheer force behind it would likely be enough to cause internal bleeding. But of course, that assumes wearing *only* mail, without any padding such as a gambeson, which never happened. So, riveted mail + a proper gambeson would likely render you immune to most kinds of swords, assuming of course you only get hit in protected areas.
@JETWTF
@JETWTF 7 лет назад
Plate was not created because of cuts and thrusts but because of blunt force weapons. Mail and a gambeson isn't going to do much against a Warhammer, you need something solid covering the gambeson. Plate stops the hammer and the gambeson absorbs the kinetic energy without plate the hammer is stopped by your body and your body absorbs the kinetic energy giving you a really bad day. Plate without gambeson and the body absorbs the kinetic energy and you get some blunt force trauma.

@test-tf8wt
@test-tf8wt 7 лет назад
Yes, but by moving your body side- or backwards you can negate a fair bit of the impact force. Plus Skall thrusted with all his force without having to wonder, what happens afterards. In real combat an opportunity to thrust like shown in the video was probably rare. Most likely you wouldn't commit as much into most of your thrusts, as you would just be too open, if your thrust was not lethal.
@Skallagrim
@Skallagrim 7 лет назад
Committing to an attack does not necessarily expose you, if done right. Proper body mechanics rather than overswinging and stumbling about like they do in movies and video games. :)
@test-tf8wt
@test-tf8wt 7 лет назад
I was not talking about overswinging, but the fact alone that your weapon might be stuck in the maille a bit is already enough to give your opponent an advantage in a fight. So yes, if done properly, a thrust will not completely expose you but still hinder your ability to return to a defensive stance/guard immiediately and therefore expose you for a maybe half a second? or even less, but it still might be enough to give your foe an advantage in the fight.
@Skallagrim

test Well, in a real fight you would also yank the sword out as hard as you can without having to worry about wrecking the stand or tearing the strings that hold the piece of mail in place. :)

From this and other armor tests I've watched, it seems as if armor all around is extremely effective against most or all contemporary weapons. How did casualties get inflicted in ancient and medieval times then? How were the battles decided if severe or fatal injuries were rare? And what allowed the historical battles with high casualty counts given that armor was so good? I'm shocked at how effective armor is given that I know a lot of people died in battle.

Skall, I found this most educational. But as for the weight on the frame, I'd leave it as it is. Why? The fact that some of your momentum is transferred to it in such way may (I think) dissipate the impact pretty much like how an actual opponent would try to deflect or dodge your attack. In conclusion: I think the results on a stand like this may give a better representation than hitting a target on a firm and solidly placed stand.
@sffc95
@sffc95 7 лет назад
Not necessarely, I get your point but you have to consider that the stand doesn't represnt the weight of a person, nor the distribution of said weight. If the center of mass is lower, then it's much harder to tumble it. A more interesting experience would be using the prosthethics he got (at least just the chest), and build a makeshift dummy with legs and average weight, so that he could test how much a stab or a shove would actually be able to make someone who is intentionally lowering the cnter of gravity fall
@Mtonazzi
@Mtonazzi 7 лет назад

Question: would it make sense to use something like a crash test dummy if you wanted real proportions and weight? Although I guess maybe they would be a bit too pricey :o
@sffc95
@sffc95 7 лет назад
True, hence why I said makeshift. It's not very important to have sensors on the Heads, Shoulders Knees and toes... knees and toes. However, with some wood, pen and paper and some weights it could be possible to replicate a human's distribution of weight, and also use the prostethics as visual cues. Thus effectively simulating how a real blow would be (as long as the dummie is in a fighting stance)

There are lot of people had video testing butted & riveted mail, gambeson & plate on youtube, while I hope you can test something new stuff such as coat of plate, brigandine & jack of plate (sewing type of brigandine). From some resources I read, it said that later brigandine is even capable to stop specific type of firearm.

well apparantly, though not widely used there was supposedly butted mail used by some people, most likely by those who could not afford normal mail. this could perhaps represent the examples of the historical accounts which show people being completely run through and their mail being cut
@ethomson0
@ethomson0 7 лет назад
OK I think the big take away here is not that the riveted mail can resist thrusts, but that even though a riveted hauberk can can resist penetration from a spear, that the amount of force received from a strike would still break a rib and leave a defender vulnerable to follow up strikes and etc. So, even though you are only testing the material, the man in hauberk (who is able to deflect and parry) is still more important that the hauberk itself.

I don't think the mail is entirely historical accurate in it's construction, the holes for the rivets looks like they have been drilled or stamped out and not pushed open like on historical mail so the metal around the rivet is raised: s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/44/63/c2/4463c2a9b560f91090df9da4f39c6b41.jpg Still interesting test to see

Yes, it probably would, along with other variables such as wire thickness and diameter of the rings (which varied a bit in period). I have to wonder Skallagrim if its fisically responsible/possible to make metallurgically accurate butted mail. The accounts of mail being cut/run through sound like they could more likely be a material/structural failure. In modern times I imagine that even the stainless steel or aluminum rings we have now are more flexible than what they would have had then - If historic sword metallurgy is anything to go by, 13th century riveted mail would have used an iron with far more inclusions than modern steels.

Yeah, straight iron is hard to get these days. I would like to see a test done with that. Iron is generally softer than steel so I can imagine how it could be cut through if carbon were not added and then having it all tempered, or if it were rusted when cut. Ooh, that'd be cool look into, if we have extent mail with such cuts. I'd like to know if there were any broken links left on it so it could tell us how it was tempered.

Perhaps the mail should have been bonded to a pig diaphragm, each sword that penetrates, penetrates about 2 to three inches, -which is distance between the mail and the end of the solid backing of the structure it is hanging from. Perhaps with follow through, the two inches that the blade penetrates would go deeper through the body whilst pulling the mail into the flesh with the blades force, creating quite a nasty wound indeed.

One big reason it dident get deeper is (what I think) because the "stand" is absorbing alot of energy, a human body dosent move like that, the human body is not completly "static" when you thrust sutch a pointed tip into a torso (for example) the body is not moving that much because its center mass. Hard to explain, I think you should try with more weights!

Where mail hauberk or any mail armour worn outside of gambeson or inside gambeson?
@Wilderwolfman

i would assume that the stories of riveted mail wearers being run through are either from horseback shock Cav or just bad/old mail.

question, would you have more success with say, a pike than with the spear? I'm no expert, but I've seen a few pikes with narrower heads, and with longer purchase... I dunno

And they laughed when I had sewn stainless riveted mail to my bullet proof vest carrier . With a trauma plate in it for good measure . No one ever even knew i had it on except the guys i worked with .

Hey Skall. I'm interested in getting into HEMA but I was wondering if I could learn techniques with something like a machete instead of making a purchase as large as say, an Albion sword. Thanks!

The one thing about this: I still wouldn't want to get hit with any of these weapons in full maile with the thickest gambeson. Even if it doesn't go all the way through it just looks like it would hurt like hell 😂

How is the Lange Messer doing so far? I havent found many reviews of Nielo Swords, most of them where a few years old and it seems that back then it was basicly luck if you got a good blade or a poor one.

I know this is a stupid question but what would classify as sword as a sword breaker such as a long sword probably mispronounced that but something that would have so much mass behind it could break a weaker blade

What is that mail made from anyways? I know as hell it's not metal washers but it looks a bit like it. Yes, I know that metal washers that are used for bolts are terrible.

A stand in an "A" shape will not rock like that as long as the stance is wide enough, may still need some ballast to prevent sliding but the stand would be substantially more sturdy.

I mean even if the penetration wasn't much, it would certainly hurt from a blow like that. At minor, bruising, or broken bones. But in a fight, that would also stagger you severely.

May i ask? In For Honor, the Knight uses the guard of his sword to kill, is that some sort of fighting style, and how does it work?

Given the unpredictable quality of ancient and medieval iron, and the consequently unpredictable effects of accumulated damage and stress on armour pieces, I don't doubt that someone at some point got run clean through while wearing mail. It would be very unlikely, but of all the lances hitting all the mail in all the battles of history, one could have done it.
@kski113

In regards to the historical accounts of guys in mail getting run through and hauberks being sliced open by a sword......well, not everything was made to the highest quality, so I think it's likely those accounts may indicate that those unfortunate souls were wearing poorly made hauberks

Maybe the dummy you used had way to much "give" when you hit it than is normal for a human and that's why you didn't go that far in. Anyhow I can't see the stabs you made going through the gambason (I'm sorry I can't spell it). Though the test you did does clearly show the effectiveness of mail. Thanks you I really enjoyed the video and seeing riveted mail was amazing!

You have to mention the material. Modern steel is way harder and consists also of other metals that gives it good flexibility and strength.
