i think a normal person that doesn't live on a screen would word it more like "have you tried using mouse and keyboard? not sure how long you've been gaming but once you're comfortable you might prefer it to controllers"... and I live in my screen.. dude please.

Throughout the game it's hinted that before becoming a smuggler, Joel was essentially a "bad guy". He's done a lot of bad things and has killed a lot of innocent people but for him, it's a matter of survival. Working as a smuggler seems to be a little too easy for him but the benefits of this line of work far outweigh getting lucky off of ambushing a straggler or two. FEDRA also seems to favor him here (We know this because he's able to get out of mandatory work details) so it can be assumed he was also smuggling for some officers in this zone. It's ironic too because later we learn he briefly helped Tommy fight FEDRA and they even tortured/ interrogated a FEDRA General. Considering the game is called "The Last of US", there's not a whole lot of people left so word gets around quickly and we see this in Jackson County plus the fact that even Bill seems to know about what happened to his daughter. I'm certain Tess would've warned him beforehand about bringing any related topics up because we see how Joel reacts anytime it gets mentioned. First there was when Bill was talking to Joel about how he had someone to care about (Joel turns and looks at him with a look of warning to which Bill picks up and proceeds to finish his story carefully) then there was when Ellie brought up Sarah and Joel, for a split second, was quite close to ripping her head off before remembering who she was.
