Look What A Nail Did To This Piece Of Walnut - Stained Ogee Bowl, Turning It Wet And Letting It Warp

In this video, I turn an ogee bowl out of a chunk of Black Walnut from a larger yard tree log. As I was cutting the log up into turnable blanks, I noticed the dark staining that is typical when there is metal/iron in the wood. I had to save this. I thought I sawed around the metal just keeping the staining, but…Well, the results are gorgeous, and I had so much fun and have absolutely no complaints turning this piece of walnut (my chain saw blade and bowl gouge have a different opinion 😅). I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it.
Have a nice day. 😊

Rob that turned out really smart, and boy that nail really did stain the walnut. Think it adds to the caricature

Really nice shape. You did an excellent job with this bowl. Pretty obvious whose videos you’ve been watching, at least to me since I’ve been him too. Beautiful bowl.

Gorgeous piece of Walnut Rob and I really like the shape. Be sure to post some pictures of how it warps. Although I have found Black Walnut does not warp as much as other woods. Like Apple which is the King of Warp LOL

Why the ziplock bag between tenon and chuck?
@copperowlwoodturning5929
@copperowlwoodturning5929 6 месяцев назад
Hi Brad. The plastic keeps the wet wood from reacting with the metal jaws. The reaction causes undesirable staining and I kept the tenon as the foot. Also reaction causes the jaws to corrode if you don’t clean them off good. The plastic also helps keep the corners of the jaws from marring the foot if the size is slightly big. You still have to be gentle when tightening the chuck though. Thanks for watching and asking. I saw Richard Raffan and Tomislav do it first, btw. 😉😊😊
