Is the modern world embarrassed about car engine sounds? It’s like the cameras had their microphones turned off, and then some random road car sounds have been added, quietly, during editing. Thankfully I went to lots of rallycross back in the 80s into the early 90s. Back then it was rough, exciting, loud, and had a good social life attached to it.
Not quite. What's happened is that boy racers on the road have fitted loud pipes for street use every day of the week and the public got sick of it, so when it comes to the weekend the last thing they want is more racing noise so they complain to the council about both. Because the land is usually under council control they can easily get the circuits to reduce their noise levels or threat of closure. Where as the roads are under Police control who do nothing about the problem. Ideally you'd have petrol heads agree to behave on the road and have race circuits unlimited.
