We are sorting Dexter cattle, and look what I found! We rarely see these around our farm. We have lots of other work to do today too: moving the layer flock, putting broiler chicks on pasture, moving the cattle to fresh pasture, and visiting with the pigs. It's another fun workday on the farm!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

We never had such fine pasture grasses for our herd, but you're right: hearing them feed and listening to their legs push the grasses aside sure is relaxing. Couple that with the birds and the wind and you're in for a calming experience. Thanks again for today's video, Pete.

I tried the eggspiriment myself the other day, typical supermarket egg vs a pasture raised organic small farm egg the local health coop sells. It really was amazing how colorless the supermarket egg looks im comparison. I wouldn't know if they tasted all that different since I added in a bunch of taco seasoning, but the texture was noticeablely different too. The pasture eggs were much more fluffy and creamy.

Hi, Pete, I would just like to say how much me and my husband enjoy watching your videos. We used to farm on an small scale but it was strictly pigs for us - Tamworths. At the height of our farming we had ten sows and one boar. We sold close to a hundred weaners a year plus we sold sides and went to the farmers' market. Of course, videos where you show the pigs are my favourite but I do have one suggestion to make - more dishes! We found several dishes or troughs spread out work best because then everyone got a chance to eat equally and it cut down on "hogs at the trough". When it came time to take them to the butcher - around 230 pounds - they were all pretty well the same weight within 10 pounds or so. Thanks again for the videos!

I really enjoy seeing and hearing about what your able to do on 45acres. Where we live we would need 80-90 acres to do the same. That's with normal rains that is. We have sand/ gravel soil with very little organic matter to support growth. Grasses grow well and our land is good for pasture. My family has worked for over 80yrs to improve the soil on the land and it's much better, but still not good enough to grow crops.

If you have time Pete i would be interested on your view of having a older tractors on the farm vs one new kubota or any other brand. Personally nothing against new machines but i dont have the income to afford them. Having 2-3 older tractors do the same job for me. Yes there are downsides but then again where is the joy of learning and discovering the knowhows yourself? I like working on cars but the moder vehicles are just a hassle to start with.
@COIcultist
@COIcultist 3 года назад
Steve I'm currently watching Mustie 1 renovate a Kubota that is a few years old. What surprises me is that this Kubota, his friend's Kubota and the other Kubota he has at another place is that none has a roll bar. Though commonly called a roll bar that is a misnomer, it is a roll-over or more often a roll back (where the tractor tips backwards on snatching a load) protection. These first started appearing in the UK and Ireland in the 1960s or 70s, nowadays, all larger tractors have full protection cages and no doubt glazing and air-con. You even see vintage Fergussons or David Browns where farmers' affixed bars behind the seat. These Kubotas are not that old though, has the US never had any legislation for tip-over protection for tractor drivers? Out of courtesy, I would have provided a link to what I was talking about, but Pete doesn't like YT links. Are Kubota still making these small tractors for the US, in the UK the smallest is a 66bhp model in a modern format.
@SuperMAZ007
@SuperMAZ007 3 года назад
@@COIcultist I have seen Mustie 1 video. Well he dose what he can. Can't say anything bad about Kubotas.They have there nish of usage in today's world. As for the roll bars. Not that familiar with western tractors. But I can give a example from what I know from my hearth: I remember the Soviet tractors from the Belarus series started getting roll over bars in the early 1980s for the internal Soviet market. But the onse that got exporter where equipped by the abroad dealers with roll over bars and inside reinforced frames for the cabin as early as late 1960s. That was to do safety laws that made it mandatory. There where a lot of accidents with the belarus tractors specially the 720 series that in a case of a roll over the cabin would crush the driver and be fatal 99% of the time. I'm amazed it took the soviet union really 30 years to start taking measures to prevent death on roll over or fatal injuries? What ever the case was at least the later tractors where much safer to use for the end user.
@Mtbambeno
@Mtbambeno 3 года назад
He kind of covers the new vs old tractors in one of his tractor restoration videos if I remember correctly. I agree with him that I would rather fix up an inexpensive older tractor than spend the large chunk of money a new tractor would entail. I have a decent old 4020 John Deere and a old Mahindra 4500 with a Frey Loader. The Mahindra runs but still needs a little work but at 3,000 vs 35,000 I know which route I am going to pick.
@SuperMAZ007
@SuperMAZ007 3 года назад
@@Mtbambeno Maybe he did, cause Pete has had so many videos I keep loosing track. I do see benefits as a small farmer having older tractors. But there are some pitfalls with them as well. Don't think that is the case in the States cause there is a huge variety of different models and brands. Not to talk about retailers and vendors who specialise also in older models. In some parts of the world it different. I can only speak from my own experiences but that would be like making a hour long video. Rather saying it short, make a plan and be sure to know what you buy+ always have extra cash in case you need to spend more then you planned for.
