While we most likely all remember Goofy's sports cartoons, did you know he had a cousin who excelled athletically? Let's take a look back at the brief career of Sport Goofy!
I had no idea that the character in "Soccermania" was seperate from Goofy himself, I just assumed it was him playing the part of an athlete. Nor did I know he had had such extensive appareances in the comics (to the point that model sheets were drawn up). Really mind-blowing stuff.
Way back in the early 80s I used to watch the Goofy Sports cartoons all the time. We had them on a RCA vinyl record disc movie - movie technology pre-dating VHS. :D They were my favorite cartoons, and Goofy is still my favorite of the fab five characters.
I actually saw Soccermania by chance a while back, and noticed that Tad Stones, creator of Darkwing Duck was in the credits. I happen to be Facebook friends with him and asked him about it, and he gave me some nice insight on what went down with this short. He also gave a funny anecdote about how the Disney executives weren't really a fan of his ideas, and in particular turned their nose up on Darkwing Duck at first.
The song ”You can always be number 1” was used as the anthem in the Swedish tv show ”Lilla Sportspegeln” - a show about sports, aimed at kids. The song was translated into Swedish and was being performed by future pop-star Robyn.
Let’s not forget that John Debney also did scores for the Disney movies The Emperor’s New Groove, Chicken Little, and Disney’s 2016 live-action remake of The Jungle Book!
I personally think that Sport goofy is a pretty fun character but I think the goofy in the Soccermania Special was probably goofy himself but hey that’s my personal opinion
That character always confused me as a kid. Like, even back then, I could tell he wasn't QUITE Goofy (also, he had a really cute son who wasn't Max)... but... yeah. Weird. Goofy and Sports Goofy. That family gives their kids weird names. Also, I've heard the Sports Goofy song from Splashdance. It's kinda good -- reminds me of ABBA.
Huh, I thought it was a little odd that Goofy was referred to as Sport Goofy in the Soccermania special (which I haven't seen since I was a kid, but remember loving), but I never got the impression that he was a separate character.
I’d just like to say that I think that space jam completely ripped off this film and who framed Roger rabbit. Edit: also, it’s weird because often times in the film itself sport goofy was also actually referred to as “goofy”. So there’s some continuity...
So Sport Goofy was going to be Goofy's cousin; like Indiana Goof (aka Indiana Pipps)? Didn't see that coming. I'm still hoping more info about the whole Sport Goofy comes around, since I'm still curious as to how big it was supposed to be in the 80's?
