In this video, we head out for another day on the water. The target species today is the pacific cod. The weather gets a little wet and dreary, all a part of fishing in Kodiak, Alaska.

No dramatics for the camera, no cursing & swearing, no hurtful put-downs and no unnecessary added music; just fishing without complaint, and good-natured banter. Very pleasant viewing.

Awesome. Thanks guys for these video's. Not just the fishing, but the adventure of family working together. Father passing down skills to his son's. Most of America has lost this and we can see the results in todays world. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more of your video's in the future.

I think it's good to share the slow days as well as the action packed ones - provides perspective and why it's called 'fishing' not 'catching'. We like squid baits here as well for the same reason i.e they stay on the hook longer. when it's slow we double up a squid bait and fish bait on the hook so if the fish bait goes the squid is there as insurance. I can also very much relate to what you said about fishing when it's quiet - One of the reasons I fish out to sea is to escape the crowds! Thanks again for the video.

The sea is far away in Chicago, I love the sea the smell of it the sound of it everything about it, I was born and raised in Ireland where the sea is not that far away at any point, miss fishing off wrecks for cod and beach casting on the strands there for European sea bass. With covid I haven't been able to visit there in the past couple of years. Love eating fish and chips (cod) there where they do it right.

Great video guys. Question, When you caught the Rock fish you gutted them before storage, but not the Cod, Why?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 3 года назад
The rockfish were sent out fresh, meaning not filleted and packaged/frozen. For the cod, these were brought in the next day to be processed, so there was no need to.

Hey folks, nice to see those big fat cod. I am amazed at how very much like Atlantic cod they are. They have to be the same species, which surprises me a little. Hi from Ireland where I enjoy your videos while unable to fish as recreational anglers are Covid locked down to 5km. I've seen you bleed and gut the Halibut on board but after bleeding the cod went in the hold. Why is there a difference?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 3 года назад
That's a shame Tim, hope it all blows over soon. Main reason is just industry standards, for cod we aren't required to. For the halibut we take weights to figure out our quota remaining and that is cleaned weight.
@KayakFishingCorkIreland
@KayakFishingCorkIreland 3 года назад
@@EISAlaska cool, thanks for explaining. No halibut here and any time I've tried a long line from my kayak it has been plagues of lesser spotted catsharks. The only time you want to see them is when nothing else is biting 🙄.

Never a dumb question, the reason is that we brought these in the next day to be custom processed, they were filleted and frozen. In our area gutting cod isn't really an industry standard, so we don't generally do that. Thanks Deb.

How do you target the cod over the rock ?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 3 года назад
It's a different sea bottom. The cod like the sand and gravel areas, whereas rockfish like hard and rocky. Rockfish do eat the bait, but it's not necessary to use it.

Nice haul guys! Love eating cod. What kind of ground and depth are you looking for to chatch them?
@EISAlaska
@EISAlaska 3 года назад
Cod usually like soft bottom, sand and mud anywhere from 10 to 100 fathoms. Deep in the winter and fall, and shallow in spring when they come up to feed on herring and sand lance and also spawn. Right now we are fishing in mid-thirties.
