Around 50 thousand people live on the Faroe Islands. But too many of them are men. Faroese women go abroad to study. Many don’t return. Men stay behind to live off the sea. Now the islands are enjoying a growing influx of women from the Philippines.
Antonette gets her folk dress out of the closet. Like a native Faroese woman, she’s getting ready for the Ólavsøka, the national holiday of the Faroe Islands. The 36-year-old actually comes from the metropolis of Manila. But life in the Philippines was too loud, stressful and uncertain for her. Antonette sought security and safety and married Regin Egholm a year ago. Her first daughter was born nine months later. Her new happiness on the other side of the world is complete.
Antonette is one of about 200 Filipinas who now live on the islands in the North Atlantic. Rain instead of sun, dried fish instead of tropical fruits - at first, their new life on the edge of Europe was a culture shock for many of them. And yet Filipinas and Faroe Islanders often share the same values. Family, faith and tradition are important in both cultures.
These values are often reason enough for young, liberated Faroese women to leave. The only university is too small and most men too old-fashioned. As a result, there are about 15 percent more men than women living on the islands today. The government is trying to make the Faroes more attractive. New courses of study and more jobs are supposed to draw Faroese women back to the islands. But in the meantime, women from the Philippines are settling in their new home, where they form the largest ethnic minority on the islands, closely followed by women from Thailand.

I live in Singapore. There are many Filipinos here. 1 thing i learned from them is that they're very adaptable to new environments and willing to integrate. They keep their culture but they respect local cultures. They make themselves as part of the country they're living in.

Clicked on this out of boredom rather than curiosity, wasn't disappointed. The relaxed way it was filmed and edited made it engaging enough that i wouldn't have complained if it ran for longer. Narrator: One of Europe's most remote regions shows how integration can work. Integration can only work if immigrants want to integrate, unfortunately, this isn't always the case and some expect a country to change to be like the country they left. You don't have to give up traditions to integrate but it does help by taking part in local traditions. You can have the best of both worlds, only you make it a problem when you demand local traditions change to suit your entitlement. Filipino women are some of the most amazing people i have met, extremely humble.

I would think integration from women (and men) marrying a native rarely is a problem. the problem usually comes from taking in too many people with a diffrent culture and no connection to the country or the people there. And also placing them all in the same neighbourhoods so they have very limited interactions with the native people. I'd say the problem is rarely with the immigrants, but with the politicians who "compete" with their peers in accepting the most immigrants. because in their eyes more immigrants means you're a better person.

smadge100 Why do you think that it is prostitution for a husband to provide for his wife and children? Do you think that a wife should cook, clean, do laundry, birth babies, raise the children, and earn half the family income while the husband gets to keep his income all to himself? I am a high wage earning white American woman and even I would not marry a man that will not provide for me and the children we will have together. It is not just to clean up after a grown man, cook his meals, wash his close, birth and raise kids his kids, and then be called a prostitute or reduced to a bed buddy just because the man brings his paycheck to the table. What the fuck does a man actually contribute to a family if not his paycheck since the woman does everything else for the family. Please don’t bother with saying his persona and love is enough because it is not when the wife is contributing her time, labor, and resources.

She should be the role model of the Filipinas who are in Faroe Islands. Addennum: The Filipina women living in Faroe Islands were also featured in a local tv show (kmjs). After watching it, I got the impression that some of the Filipinas in the island are male-ordered-brides. The Faroese dude is also correct. Most of the Filipinas will do the household chores for their family. (It is questions my identity if I am really a Filipina. I am too lazy to do household chores. Hahaha)

Amazed at how Beng easily adapted and loves this place. It is beautiful, but so different from Philippine weather where we constantly have sun, I can imagine how lonely it must feel during winter.
@blueheart8786
@blueheart8786 3 года назад
Having sun and warm weather does not automaticually mean you are less lonely. I know of many Pinoys that do not feel lonely in cold Canada, Norway and so on. It is not the weather that defines whether you will feel lonely or not, but more if you find companionsship, and in many places you will find the warmest and kindest people in the cold places. Given it is hard to a first get close to them, but when you do, then you get a friend for life. Often people in the cold places are more genuine than in warmer places.

@@blueheart8786 there is a direct correlation between sunlight, vitamin D levels and mood. That’s the reason why people buy sun lamps to help during winter. christina fouche I am from the Global South (also known as the developing world) so I feel protective of these women. And I live in the West, where I received my education and have a career, so I am capable of understanding phenomena. I too would love to travel to this place because it looks beautiful. But I do take issue with men specifically targeting a marginalized group. When it’s a trend or a statistic, you question the motives. And the interviews here, from which I quoted, prove my point. Wouldn’t it be easier to seek out women in the region, for example, because of shared backgrounds such as culture and language? Also, Africa is a vast and diverse continent, not a country. “I live in Africa” says very little.

Also, it wasn't well explained why women were leaving, they wanted 'excitement' and the young men did not? Or was it because women were expected to stay home and keep house and be subservient to their husbands?

Nothing wrong with that if people go into it freely, some people's personalities go well with traditional gender roles, some don't, which is why they leave or try to change things, like Ingilin later in the film. Love how the old man blames it on the women, that they are 'looking for excitement', no they have choices and a voice, good for them old man!!!

The way they translated it made it seem more conservative than it was meant, besides they dont want to leave their lives most of the time. They go to study abroad because we have very few Uni courses here, and meanwhile they are studying they find themselves a partner

@LagiNaLangAko23 you can go out on a fishing boat for days/weeks/months at the time. fish factory, government job, restaurant/hotel jobs. They kinda have everything but in very small amounts. So not much chance to get the job you want. I could only get a restaurant job when I was there.

300 days of rain! But good for her adjusting to that sunless land and building her home there. Fishing and island life is same in Philippines

Interesting. These men want a woman who cooks, cleans and raises children, but these traditional women won't stand for infidelity. You can't have your cake and eat it too! Good for this lady for sticking to her traditional values.

The Philippines are such a vast archipelago. Is it a coincidence that the Filipinas seem to find it easier to get by with the insular environment of Faroe Islands since they're used to being an islander back in the Philippines??

@@LegendTheAnonymous " what to do with surplus men " why indicates there is a problem with those men because they are surplus men more than what women need ??!! Like because they aren't utility for a women they became a problem , there is no problem with these men therefore there is nothing to do

jeff jeff Oh I see. Well I don’t know I think you are a bit oversensitive, I think it is just a title to capture attention, also surplus doesn’t have to mean that these men are useless.

Traditional marriages don't automatically mean abusive men and weak women. Yes, in some cases. But there's just as much trouble in "modern" marriages too 🙄. It's about mutual respect and both parties being happy with how they choose to live. More power to them.

Exactly. Toxic marriages painted a bad picture for traditional marriages but they are not always like that. I hope more people realize this.
