Wow!!!

Actually, difficult as this is to say...I was quite a bit like her. Everyone thought I was this sophisticated jet-setter, truthfully....I was extremely lacking in self-confidence, having gained quite a bit of weight after my two children (got married and had them very young, gave up my career for my much-older husband who turned out to be a real jerk). I decided to do something about it, entered part-time ballet classes, lost all the weight and then some, toned and felt good. But I truly was unsure of myself for a long time.....until I decided to return and finish my career education. I graduated top of my class, enjoyed a fantastic and rewarding, loving career as an ER/ Trauma RN for nearly 40 years. I’m old now, but I remember wondering why people (especially men!) seemed afraid to approach me, never went outside without my hair and nails and make-up perfect. IT WAS HARD WORK, LEMME TELL YA!👍🏽😅. But I became happy with caring for the poor, the homeless in an inner city hospital......and only MY LORD AND MY GOD made this happen! Still happy and contented looking at “my Harvest”....my beautiful grandchildren who are striking out onto their own beautiful roads and lives. I guess the moral of my story, anyway, is Life us so, so short.....don’t worry if you’re so glamorous and beautiful all the time! Allow people to see the beauty INSIDE of you! I can so relate to trying to unlock the true stories of people that I've "lost."

In a world where silence is denigrated, over exposure reified and vacuous females call themselves “influencers,” I continue to embrace my privacy. I am not on any social networking sites like Farcebook which presents a reflection of a faux self via a carefully crafted “life,” as disingenuousness attempts to pass as authenticity. It fails spectacularly through self-promotion as an illusion for empty, aimless lives.

The sad truth is, it's not an uncommon reaction. It's all too human to refuse to believe things that would upset your world. How much easier for many, to turn their heads and deny. I don't get it, but that may because I was blamed and I grew up knowing I would never do that to anyone.

Particularly her mother's reaction to it. The mother sounded so admirable, too, up to that point - a suffragette type. That generation did brush things under the rug, but to blame Louise for seducing him!

I think they are just living up to the standard. Society expects or at least claims that all beautiful people are ugly inside. It is the way they cope with not being beautiful on the outside; it makes them feel better about themselves to put better-looking people down. How many times have I heard that I have a "weakness" for good-looking men? Like how is that a weakness? What, I am strong when I am only attracted to ugly men because you know that all ugly men are beautiful inside? Because people assume that all good-looking men are assholes inside? Right. From experience, THAT theory failed to stand up to the test. Ugly men can be even nastier maybe because they are holding a grudge? Maybe from hearing that they are going to be lady killers, or man killers from an early age, physically attractive people subconsciously build that expectation into their personalities. Being constantly hounded and molested doesn't help. It builds hardness and thick skin to the extent that the ugliness physically attractive people experience from people on the outside starts to mirror itself from the inside. What is more, what is attractive physically to one person may not be to another. So how society builds such universal myths about physically attractive people is beyond me.

@@suzannfulbright5652 Look, this isn't rocket science. There's nothing new under this sun. Bottom line, it's the quality of that which lives under the skin that makes the difference in the humanity of being. Physical attractiveness is lovely, and loads of fun, to look at. But it's the interior life (if any) that holds, and earns, either respect or disdain. The body decays, but a heart, spirit and soul need not. The person who esteems greater a pretty exterior, over a beautiful interior, well, that reflects upon them, doesn't it? (Rhetorical question.) Physical attractiveness and inner beauty certainly aren't mutually exclusive. But both qualities, in one person, remain uncommon. And where interior attractiveness is, of course, completely absent where toxic narcissism exists.

How wonderful 💕 I did the same on the unmarked grave of an unknown murder victim in Oslo in 1994. Look it up. Oslo Plaza Murder. So sad. I found her grave last year after having looked for it a long time. Placed red roses. If I ever find Brooks grave in the US, I will for sure buy a big boquet for her.

A terrific profile of Louise Brooks in "Show People" by Kenneth Tynan. Weidenfield & Nicholson. 1979. "The Girl in the Black Helmet" Tynan interviewed her over several days and much of this piece is Brooks verbatim. One example gives the flavor "...born in the Bible Belt of Anglo Saxon farmers who prayed in the parlour and practiced incest in the barn." An amazing woman

There is also an entire chapter about LB in Kevin Brownlow's "The Parade's Gone By ..." (U of California Press, 1968).

I see that sentiment stated too seldom about her. I've watched a few of her movies now, and even when the role was one of a bauble or ingenue, she just dominated the room and the screen. Such a strong woman, even against all the currents of the time.

Only creepy if considered in "conventional" terms. Louise Brooks was the definition of timeless beauty. Appreciation for that is unfortunately beyond most in our society.

Having just finished her book I couldn't quite put my finger on it and have to agree with you. Maybe she was one of those people who just had to push people away and didn't know how to do it in a normal manner? I might be way off the mark, but she seemed to be a real loner who denied her chronic unhappiness. Being a loner is fine, but there is just that "something else" that is behind her...

I was thinking, how fortunate that she didn't have children.
