Looking for sea shells after a storm. What crazy things washed up on the beach this week?

Looking for sea shells after a storm is always thrilling. I was very excited to watch the storm pass by and anticipate what sea shells I'd find when I went to the beach in the morning.
I didn't get to go to the beach I wanted to, but I did get to go to the island I wanted so I made the best of it. I came prepared and found myself a whole bunch of beachy goodness!

Yes, you have been very helpful in educating this shell huntress. I've learned a lot from you about the variety, size, color, etc., of shells in your area. And, your videos are topnotch: you clearly spend a lot of time recording & editing your videos, going out to great beaches, hauling your treasures home, cleaning and displaying your beautiful finds and providing a lot of tips (education). You talk about Shell Crafts, but I haven't seen any quite yet (I'll be looking after this vid). Many Thanks for all you do! 😀 ❤

That was an amazing walk!! I love how you talk about the shells and the water. I thought too that when the ocean is rough like that that there would be a lot more shells up on the beach but I was surprised. You did great with your finds today. Can't wait til next week, looks like it's going to be another great walk!! Have a great week and thank you for bringing the beach world to us!! 😊🐬

Just wanted to thank you. After a year of watching your videos (the best for shelling on a beach) I have been educated to a point of knowing what to look for and seeing things I would have probably overlooked. For the last 12 years, we usually spend 3 weeks on North Captiva during mid October - early November. This last visit, for the first time ever, I found flats, apple murex, banded tulips and lace murex. I was like a kid in a candy store. There was a storm which I welcomed because of the great shelling after. However it wasn't until the third or fourth day before we encountered the Mother of all shell piles and her daughters. Amazing what nature shows us. Thank you for bringing enthusiasm and expertise to a most enjoyable video experience.

Hi Sharmon! I have watched your channel for quite some time and faithfully watch a new episode every Sunday evening. Last week the interview video q&a by beachcombing life popped up on my feed and it's nice to connect a name and a face to your voice. I've been shelling the coast of Maine for over 50 years and will be on Sanibel for a week in mid-December. I've been twice before and love the island. Maybe we'll cross paths on the beach. If I find just one chestnut turban it would make my day! I appreciate all that you share. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I agree with Anna Marie. I found so many chestnut turbans on Honeymoon Island I had to stop collecting. I also had to stop collecting the operculums because they were everywhere. I was there in May. I also found long-spined star shells there. I had never seen them before. They are beautiful!

I think it was a day to look and find textured shells and I am really not surprised that most people did not see them. I think most people look for color only. That is only part of what I have learned watching your shelling videos! Those flats I probably would have thought were broken parts of a scallop at one time. I once found a bonnet and didnt know what it was thank goodness I kept it and and looking through my shells this year found it (again) mixed in with a lot of my other common shells! I think too the parking time limits make you rush along faster than you would like for sure!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 года назад
It's funny what people consider great shells or keepers can be different from sheller to sheller. I remember the first scotch bonnet I found - all beat up from a storm but I was so excited! I've since replaced it with a few good ones I found over on the East Coast. At this point I almost always keep the strange or mystery shells I find so I can try to figure out what they are and if I should keep them 😅

I have learned a lot from your searching and have really enjoyed your commentary and finds. I found lots of cocina this year (first week of Dec) and found tulips rolling around in the water at Lovers Key. I also found some lace murex. My sister found a perfect white lace murex at Lovers Key. I look forward to going to Marco Island next year. Need to know when we might find negative low tide for there. I love the flats!! Those are some great finds! It's so weird how certain storms will just wash ashore a ton of a certain random species. I've seen this happen with buttercup lucines, horse conchs, mussel shells, but never with turbans, especially on Captiva! 19:55 I think is a Red-brown ark. They don't get bigger than that and they are a very rare find actually! Congrats! At 33:18 I think is an eastern oyster. They are a super variable species which can make them tricky to ID. Well done as always!

The operculums for the Chestnut Turbans are fun! They look like iridescent pearly little round coin shaped on the “outside “ and the “inside” side has a little brownish bump. The outside side (the pearly colored side) has a sweet little swirl in it. They’re called “Mermaid Money”. I found well over 100 easily in about half hour at Honeymoon Island state park in Dunedin, FL. If you want to do a little day trip, that’s an excellent place to go.

@deniseyoung5385
@deniseyoung5385 Год назад
@@SWFBeachLife when you are looking for the Chestnut Turban operculums, they are super tiny. Usually only about the size of an aspirin tablet or smaller. They kinda hide in the mini’s & tiny section like where you would look for wentletraps. But on Honeymoon Island they are literally just everywhere and if you look for the brownish yellowish bumps on the ground you will see them. I don’t know if that might help you with finding a few on the beaches you go to nearer your home.

Just discovered your channel and I LOVE watching you shell and beach comb. I live in the PNW so we have very different shells than what you find in Florida. I would think the shell museum on Sanibel could help you with shell identification or perhaps you could ask teachers or grad students at universities. If we find things we can't identify, we consult with our local colleges...mushrooms, rocks, plants. You have learned a lot in the short time you've lived in Florida. Did you go shelling in New Jersey?

My very first time I came to SWFL I stayed at Fort Myers Beach at Bella Lago condos. It was across the street from a fantastic shelling area on FMB. Fort Myers Beach is a little more "lively" than Sanibel is and there's a Times Square with restaurants and bars and live music. And on the south end of the island I find all the same shells I find on Sanibel. Sanibel is another great location and I would think anywhere close to the beach there would be a great place to stay for shells as well. Lover's Key is great too!

You’ve got some amazing finds. Do you wash the shells when you take them home?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 года назад
I rinse them real good and then determine from there what I'll do. I'll try to clean up some by either soaking it in bleach or dipping it in acid and I'll either keep it, I'll put it to the side to sell or if it looks like there's no saving it, I'll bring it back to the beach. Most of the shells I end up with are generally in pretty decent shape but I'll experiment with some occasionally just to see what will happen.

What do you use to clean off the beach crude as you call it? Would be nice to do a video on cleaning them up.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 2 года назад
It depends on which type of beach crud I'm talking about. Anything green, and the slimy Florida Fighting Conchs go in 100% bleach. Anything white gets acid or mineral oil. Different crud calls for different cleaning methods. Lately I've been showing some beat up shells and I'll show how they clean up at the end of the video and what technique I use. I can't always predict how the shells will clean up but sometimes I'm left surprised!

I also found some other pretty shells I swam with dolphins in Florida they were cute and not slimey.

I personally wouldn't dip anything with a natural shine, like Florida Fighting conchs, olives, shark eyes or gaudy naticas. You can, but it will strip anything shiny away. I love to dip murex shells, tulips (even though they do have a little shine to them), and crowned conchs. You can always try mineral oil after dipping if there are still any white areas left. Happy dipping!

I'm new to Sharmon's channel, and I'm binging on the older shows. I saw this and my attentions turned to a lamp I have with a jar base. (It was full of shells when Mom brought it home. Im land locked here.). ."What ? Is the lamp full of about a kazillion shells whitish, chalky.... No !. Chestnut Turbans ?. Yes !!!" I opened that sucker up and soaked a few of them, and had the similar patterns she was finding !. Even found an operculum !. The lamp had a big fish vertebra, a few bits of finger coral and a broken fighting Conch which is very interesting. About the Nutmeg: they have a more intricate apperature opening than theTurbans do. Alot going on in that mouth. I'd like to have a bigger one some day, mine is about BB sized, lol ! I Enjoyed your comment, Blessings !

I actually started making videos a bit before I started beachcombing, so I have a little bit of a head start when it comes to the whole production of a video.
