why when I hold my finger on 3 strings nothing is heard? I'm a beginner!

My fingers are fatter than large sausages so from A major 7 and beyond I always mute at least one string and I have practiced for a couple days with no improvement on it. Still this is a fairly good tutorial, I’m just fat so I can’t make use of it.
