@@firegator6853 I stated "Glad you helped him" in my comment. I thought that was self explanatory that I did read the description and knew he helped it.....
I was just worried if he'd hurt himself somehow, or if he'd been struck by a car. I had no idea loons can barely walk. I learned something new today. Thanks and good on you for helping him!
That happens with other waterfowl too. Especially in the rain when the dark asphalt glitters like the surface of water, swans for example sometimes crashland and hurt themselves ❤️🩹 I wish there was giant bird stickers like those you put on windows to keep them from thinking it’s water
Wow! Such beautiful feather designs. Fun fact: some birds that may look solid black to us, actually have colors that we humans cannot see, only other birds!
There's a pure black duck at my local park but when the sun shines on him there's blue, green, purple, pink, just a whole rainbow! Iridescence like no other
@@TropicGal777 The Common Grackle in North America has similar things going in with the feathers. When the sun shines on them, they get a slight rainbow-like appearance of purples and blues
I found him "crash landed" in the parking lot at work. Something must have scared him out of the water and since it was night he must have thought our lot was water and attempted to land. I did some research and apparently loons cannot walk. He did attempt to move his legs to get away but couldn't move. He tried flying away but didn't get far. He foot was bleeding a bit but it stopped on its own.
God bless your soul for saving this little fella, my friend! It was heartbreaking seeing the dried-up blood under him but I’m so happy to know that the loon was released back into the water. Again, God bless your soul 🙏🏻
I had the same thing happen to me when I was 13! Virginian; I had to get one that broke its leg out of the flood containment area of my pool's pond after he tried to clear two ponds, failed twice, and then got stuck on his second attempt. Dude almost stabbed me but I was able to put a rubber band around his beak and wrap him up in a towel. Animal Control didn't believe me when I said I caught a loon.. till he got here and opened the box~ xD
It feels so weird knowing that most people associate that sound with movies. Growing up in Iceland I have always associated the Loon call with nature and the summer.
Scenarios like this happen quite a bit during the summer here in the U.K. - after it rains, the sunlight shining off surface water on tarmac can make roads look like stretches of water to birds in flight, and so it’s not unheard of to see large water birds such as swans come in to land, then get into difficulty getting back into the air since they don’t have enough space to gather the speed required.
I’ve seen swans try to walk on ice to get across the water and the poor things can barely get by - the dominant ones end up fighting each other for ‘water space’
It was so kind of you to try helping the little guy. That just warms my heart. :) I'm sorry about the people complaining. They obviously didn't bother to look at the description.
Aw, this little guy's situation is upsetting. It's so great that you happened to be around and stopped to help him. Can't imagine what another few hours in that state-confused, lonely, unable to move, exposed-would have been like. I know this video is nearly 10 years old, but good on you. You can tell a lot about a person based on how they treat animals. : )
Such a beautiful bird. The loon might have "crash landed" and got separated from it's partner or migratory flock. It seems very confused to not hear a response back from it's other loon(s). Poor Lil guy. I hope they managed to find them again. Thank you for taking the time out of your day/night to look after it! Loons are very, very vulnerable on land (because of their dense bones / inexperience to walk properly with their huge feet) and easy, EASY prey for any predators in the area (Even distracted humans! Since it was stranded in a parking lot, it could have easily been run over by a car 💔) Bless your heart, you did all you could for it. (And the right thing!) Much love and respect for you.
Fortunately it was night shift and I can't remember if it was a holiday or if the plant was in Shutdown Maintenance mode. I was the only one there at the time.
It was heartbreaking to watch it as it didn't get a response. That long, howling call is specifically used to ensure that the loon isn't alone, and still has other loons around. Kinda like a beautiful Marco Polo game.
their call is so hauntingly beautiful when it echoes across water, maybe it's just because they remind me of home, but i feel their call somewhere deep within me. thank you for helping him get to safety :)
I'm glad you added a description, because it really looks like some sort of loon torture and ransom video. Good sir, it's illegal to interrogate loons in this country. 🧐
Yes, it is true that Loons cannot walk very well on the ground because their legs are situated farther back on their bodies than any other wayer bird. They are fantastic swimmers, and diving is their feeding/defensive specialty. This person did a huge favor to the stranded Loon and likely saved it's life by getting it to water and releasing it. On land they can be easily taken by a predatory animal or hit by a car. Sir, you did exactly what was best for this unfortunate situation and just ignor the uninformed commenters!
They are beautiful animals. I’d be willing to bet this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, to be able to see one up close like this. Glad you were able to help him out.
Bless you for helping this loon out. Thanks for filming him too. It's not a bird you often get a chance to be that close to. I love their calls. I find them very peaceful.
Oh random cool fact about common loons, they sometimes mistake roads and driveways as bodies of water and get stranded. Loons are like a plane, they need a runway of water to take off. They can't take off without water.
Thank you for including the description. Far, far too many people will hurt animals and then film them for clout. You're a good person for helping that Loon.
I’ve read stories about loons dying like this even after they’re rescued from the injuries to their breast, so thank goodness you helped, ik this vid is 10 years old tho. They’re so top heavy that they can’t walk long distances, just short little spurts between nearby bodies of water. They also need adequate space to take off from. Such cool birds though, love hearing their sound on a calm night.
Aww, I'm soo glad you helped it. I was worried as soon as I saw the thumbnail because it wasn't in water. I came upon one just like this near my home when i was younger; coming home late from work. I think it thought the puddle in the street was bigger than it was. My mom, thankfully, knew all about them; she loves birds. The one we found was exhausted. I took it home for the night, we gave it something to eat and released it in a creek early the next morning. It seemed to circle back in thanks, before eventually swimming away.
Loons are an example of animals that are extremely adapted to one type of environment - the poor things don't do well out of water at all. I'm so glad you were there to help it before something bad happened.
I have been searching the source of that beautiful call, that is used in so many japanese themed media, for months. Your video has finally put an end to it. What's more weird is that loon's wail used in mentioned media for cranes/herons or just a generic japanese garden ambient sound, and I can't still wrap my head around the fact it took me so long to find the source. Loons don't even seem to live in Japan, what the hell?
Yeah, I wish people would be more accurate with their bird calls in films. For example, in many films, if there is a bald eagle flying over head, they play a Red-tailed Hawk call. If you look up Bald Eagle and Red-tailed Hawk calls, I guess the hawk is supposed to sound more fierce so they use that instead, but I think the eagle sounds just as fierce. And a lot of herons make a sort of grunting call, so that's probably why they don't use the correct call. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a bunch of sounds and they are trying to get people to use them accurately.
Americans, actually - mistake is present almost in every Japanese THEMED project, starting from small bunch of dedicated animators who've made a lovely Kubo and Two Strings and all up to high-profile production teams, responsible for big blockbuster titles like Wolverine (2013).
I❤that sound. They very rarely come on land. The reason being that their feet are set so far back on their bodies. Not built for ealking/being on land. They are a water bird, built for swimming/diving. Thanks so much for sharing this w/us ScenePhotos.
I am glad to know they were returned to the water. I never heard the sound of a loon so close, without any echo or reverberation. It makes the bird seem like a fallen angel.
Thanks for the explanation in the description. I was wondering what the heck a loon was doing sitting on pavement. What a rare chance to see him up close
Thank you for helping him, and thank you for doing something for him even though the police an animal services didn't. Poor guy, that must have hurt :-( and been a little scary
Wow I’ve heard this beautiful majestic call on the lakes of Canada but to see it up close on a carpet is amazing. I guess he’s being rehabbed? Great video, the more animal videos there are out there the morr people and youth learn to love and respect them.
I am glad this story, according to the description, had a happy ending. Such a cool animal, I am happy he ended up happily floating down a creek, where he was able to fly away under his own steam. I hope he had many loon babies in the coming ten years.
