This is part 2 of a series of videos building and experimenting with a loop on the ground antenna, as designed by KK5JY.
Parts 1 (build), 3 (more successful tests) & 4 (adding a preamp) of this series can be seen at:
• Loop on the Ground Ant...
• Loop on the Ground Ant...
• Loop On The Ground - P...

The most encouraging lesson from this series was that I am not the only one suffering with 10dB over S9 noise on 40m.

Ha ha, yes it's grim isn't it :-( Apologies for delayed reply, I've just discovered RU-vid holds a folder of what it thinks is "iffy" comments...all mine seem ok though, so not sure why!

@@ianxfs, no idea why I was censored, I don't believe in bashing people that take the time to make videos. Maybe the computer has been mind reading, I must admit my initial prejudice was that this was going to be a disaster, but the results clearly had merit. FWIW a friend made a tuned frame aerial for receive, that was fascinating. I did wonder whether in this example if your feed impedance might be very low, ie if the transformation is backwards. I don't know the answer, might be worth trying a VNA or antenna analyser. 73

Hello Ian, another good video demonstrating what ham radio is all about, experimenting. I used a meter square frame aerial with 16 turns for top band and a variable capacitor to resonate the coil, transmitting on a loaded dipole while listening on the loop made a big difference in reducing the noise. Very interesting. I’m enthusiastic now that this could work well with the right tweaking. It will be interesting to see if the little amplifier at the feed point raises the sensitivity without increasing the noise. Well done Ian and thanks for working on this. I’m rebuilding my shack layout after purchasing a new amp. I have the FTDX5000 same as you and the shelf won’t take the weight of the radio and amp cuz they’re bloody heavy. A little job has turned into a big one as usual. Catch up with you soon. Paul

I like this sort of Video, someone knows how to do a comparison Video, not just two radios receiving the same strong signal. Great Video Cheers.

In video 1 when the loop was around the pond, you weren't impressed with the results. Here, with the loop moved to the grass, the results appear much better. Could the pond itself, being inside the loop, have been "dampening" or "diluting" the received signal? No, really. Puns intended. I'm awaiting arrival of a couple of bits to make one of these, myself for Rx to hopefully combat a fairly constant S9 noise, with a DXCommander for Tx.

Hi Raymond. I’m not sure, I’d have to watch that one back 🤔 I find it really useful now on 160 & 80m. At a guess, other than something like a metal object, I don’t think much would interfere in the centre? Good luck with yours 👍🏻

Thanks Kevin. Yes, I’ve stuck with it and it does come in handy on some QSOs. Either making good signals more pleasant to listen to or helping make out the weak ones 👍🏻

Hi Ian - Callum and I were talking about this today - it seems you have definitely achieved a better S/N ratio with the loop on the ground (on 80m at least) this time. Am I right in thinking that all you did was move it to the lawn? Previously was it on more of a concrete surface as it went around the pond? I do think that raising it up will not make any improvements. I am about to make one myself so will let you know how it goes. Well done mate. 73 Tom M0RMY

Yes Tom. When it was round the pond only the one side was on the paving. The other three sides were on grass/soil. Apologies for delayed reply, I've just discovered RU-vid holds a folder of what it thinks is "iffy" comments...all mine seem ok though, so not sure why!

You say the receive 'drops off' when you raise the loop. Does this mean you get worse results when the wire is lifted off of the ground than when it's laying directly on the ground? Thank you jacob.
@ianxfs

Yes, I got worse results as I lifted the loop higher.

As it went higher, it started to behave more like a normal antenna and was susceptible to all the noise I was trying to get away from. It performed best back on the ground. Hope this helps!

S/N improved on all bands. On 160 I have horrendous QRN from my home’s electrical meter. Having the utility company come out and check for themselves. Great antenna and highly recommend. As enjoyed your video on tracking interference source. 73 de N9NY

Ian, have you ever tried a small active loop? I've just been made aware of the MLA-30 loop. I think it needs some upgrading but it's supposed to have a lot of potential for not a lot of money. It's something I'm going to look into.

@@ianxfs No problem Ian. I mentioned this to my neighbour across the road who is into his SDR. He took a punt and bought one. He showed me the difference between his long wire and the MLA. I was pretty impressed.
