Today we compare a traditional multi band vertical to a loop on the ground receiving antenna. The matching unit is from LMK Technical Solutions in the UK and is very well built. This video was inspired by KI6NAZ holiday video about LOG antennas.

I use a loop on the ground, great and easy to do antenna, In a pinch I've used them for transmit and they did pretty well for an antenna on the ground.

Planning on doing the same thing but not using a balun. Just going to use a little manual tuner in the shack so I can tune the receive for each band. 73

Thank you for the purchase and testing. You could also try using the 7610 preamp with the LoG as sometimes it can make quite a big improvement on the SNR without increasing the noise floor much depending on local conditions. I tend to use my LoG with the 7610 on the sub RX exactly the same as your demo shows with headphones on, my DX Commander in one ear and the LoG in the other. It's really cool to hear signals move from one side of your head to the other as the propagation of the signal changes. Matt M0LMK/KI5GXV (LMK Technical Solutions)

I have noticed the same when using my headphones. Thanks for producing a good and simple project/product.

I have inverted U, Inverted L with wire hanging down from other end. I notice lower the height , lower the noise. but, transmit get worse as it get lower height. My ANT is about 14 Ft high now, good compromise between Low Noise and acceptable TX . I operate from City with tight houses in neighbourhood. my dream is move to some place like where you live. I see under ground tornado shelter. I never saw those except in OK, KS AG6JU

Nice video! Thank you. What if the LOG is placed in the open field (no influence of building)? I want to test the LOG in my small garden.

I think it may perform slightly better, but one reason I didn't move this one more out into the open is mainly feed line losses. But also, most people don't have an open area without influences of structures, so I feel this is a more realistic install for a lot of operators. Best of luck testing in your small garden. Let us know how it works.

Wellbrook ceased operations in March of 2023 and Andy Ikin, the Brains of those fantastic Antennas passed in October.

It is a fantastic antenna. I like the fact that you can null the noise out, meaning its very directional.

Thanks for this info. I didn't know Andy passed. I did have correspondence with him in the past regarding one of his loops. Really good guy.

How does the LOG compare to the Wellbrook? I have a Wellbrook, but fed with a different amp (the amp blew and I replaced it with a Cross Country Wireless loop amp, which works very well and has very deep, very sharp, nulls), and it is so quiet compared to my triangular loop (20m perimeter, with a 4:1 balun, fed at the apex - 6m/20ft agl, lowest points are about 3m/10ft above ground, so its sloping at 45 degrees or so). The triangle works really well as a TX antenna on 20-10m but is really noisy - rather like your DX-Commander (I suspect because they are vertically polarised, well I presume my loop is vertically polarised as it is top fed). I use an MFJ1026 noise phaser, with the active loop as the auxiliary input, which really helps to get the noise floor down. I've considered a LOG a few times and I can get 100-130ft loop in the garden (60x60x30x30ft, so in theory 180ft would fit but would be up at the house and too close to electrical feeds, etc.). I will be interested to see more comparisons as you get the loop configured properly. My area of interest for a project like this would be VLF-80m DXing, from a receive perspective, obviously. 73, and thanks for the videos - HNY '24, de G4UCJ - IO91ox

I have not shot the LOG vs Wellbrook comparison. The LOG actually crosses an underground electrical feed line at least twice. Thanks for watching.

Unfortunately this doesn’t show the signal to nouse ratio, which is the critical reading in checking out antennas. Not easy to do on dynamic signals.

Nice. What coax do you use out to the DX Commander??
@HamRadio200
@HamRadio200 6 месяцев назад
The DX-Commander is fed with DX engineerings version of RG-213. The 80m Dipole is fed with LMR-400 ultra-flex. If I had to do it all over again, I get some direct bury LMR-400 for both. Thanks for watching.

Did I miss you playing what the receiving antenna sounds like? Is the sound more pleasant? Can you hear qso's on the lotg that you cannot make out on the transmitting antenna? Would I rather listen to the receiving antenna than the transmitting antenna? Would I be able to complete more qso's using the transmitting/receiving antenna combination versus the transmitting antenna only?

The loop on the ground is extremely attenuated. If noise levels are high and signals are otherwise strong then the log is great. But faint stations are difficult to pull in with the log.
