I remember riding this when it was over near Batman & Robin The Chiller. It was a great ride!! It was always fun to see how much stuff woudl fall out of people's pockets or whatever when it would hang upside down. In this shot, The Great American Scream Machine is till there, which was my favorite roller coaster of all time. I am still very angry they tore it down to build The Green Lantern. Yes, the stand-up coaster is fun, but nothing in my heart of hearts can replace the fun I had on The Great American Scream Machine.
Hello there Jim. Oh yes I sure do remember people's money falling out of their pocket! My favorites were this over course, FreeFall, Kingda Ka, Scream Machine.
OMG that ride....that was great when I got older, but I have a very vivid memory of going on that when I was a kid and almost shi**ing my pants when it did the longest stop all the way upside down! LMAO that thing was no joke - great ride. One thing that sticks out in my mind was always hearing/seeing change clanging against the cage on the top that was falling out of people's pockets when they went upside down! LOL
Man, this was such a huge fave for me back in the day! I remember I always had to pin my pockets closed though, as stuff was always falling out of people's pants and purses when we were upside down. I remember you could look down underneath and see all kinds of money, watches, etc. LOL
I used to operate this in the 1999-2000 season. I think it broke midway through the 2000 season and the part they needed stopped being made or something. It was the best ride to operate in the summer because it was an air conditioned kiosk. Only problem was if someone puked you had to clean it up.
I just found this video in 4-2020! I have fond memories of ALWAYS going on this ride back in the late 80's & early 90's.... I see where you said it BROKE, & they couldn't get the part for it... I was so disappointed when they removed it, I used to look for this ride whenever I went there!
I loved this ride at sixflags astroworld in Houston Texas. Even with a lap bar and chest restraints I proved that all u needed was the seatbelt to hold you in. When I rode it once I positioned both to not touch my body and while upside down the only thing that held me in place was the seatbelt!
I used to run this ride back in 1997 . I was there the year the Chicago Bulls has the whole park to themselves that night I remember having to catch cell phones and change as it fell onto your heads lol
@@joyacresfarm7937Hi, I'm the fellow who wrote that comment: my family is middle-class. However, Game Boys were still in vogue in the late '90s, much to my eternal confusion. Aside from Pokémon, it was mostly licensed games though.
I remember this all to well. It was also a time when SFGA had a nice collection of flat rides almost on par with Canada’s Wonderland. But for some reason they got rid of all them.
@@jimkerr5426 I 1000000% agree with you on that back in the early 2000’s they had tons of them but for some reason they relocated all of them. They are just getting there flat ride collection back up. SFGA had a looping star ship, Chaos,Excalibur, Huss Enterprise, fly carpet, they had pendulum flat with Wonder Woman being the second one they had and etc. They also had big versions and small versions of flat ride for kids.
I used to ride this same ride at Six Flags Great America back in the 80's..Theirs was called the POWER DIVE!!!! and I remember the hydraulic pressure in the lap bar crushing your legs!!! To keep you from falling out and getting killed or badly hurt...Ahhh the memories of watching this!!!
Apparently this was put into storage, and it was moved around. It wasn't on a lot but wasn't closed a ton either, but lost it's popularity in later years. By the time it got any back they closed it as they did several rides citing "the recession" as the reason and it was presumed it was just in storage. But after removing great american scream machine and putting in a crappy stand up and now a larson super loop seems like it is definitely gone. Shame, the park did definitely used to have a better coaster selection and mostly with rides too (at least they have been adding more rides, including the dark ride, and a zamperla giant discovery would round it out well enough for now-now if only they'd get a really sweet coaster no single RMC crap either).
OneAndOnlySound u might of heard this but el Diablo is closing at the end of fright fest or before holiday in the park. Which most likely means there’s something going in that spot. In the rmc factory(or whatever they call it) are gonna have one rmc trex for 2020. They even said that and even great adventure said there next Addition to the park would be tall fast and steel. So I think there getting a trex in 2020 where rolling thunder use to be.
I remember as a kid having to wait a few years to be tall enough to go on this. The first time I did, I was so excited, yet so terrified. One of my all time faves. I'm guessing they had a lot of complaints though. Everytime you hung upside down, all you could hear was the clinging of coins, keys, wallets, etc hitting the caged metal roof of the starship.
OOOOO, we have a pirate ship version here in Minnesota! GREAT RIDE! Although, YES, it does hurt! It's funny seeing everyone's face turn red though because of all the blood! LOL!

Yeah I remember this ride! Way back when we were standing on line waiting to get on the ride and all the sudden one of the drive motors shorted out,and froze up while the ride was in motion.SCREEEEECH!!!
They could have done without the twilight zone music. However this space shuttle idea is so unique. I understand that this looping starship met it's eventual demise, because of constant relocations around the park, and ultimately, breakdowns due to the former.
yea i remember riding this in 1995 this didn't look like a scary roller coaster but it was simply cuz u were really high up and barely strapped in... i rode the scream machine 10 times before i rode this once
This ride actually goes fast. This ride is so humongous it appears to look as it were going slow. A similar ride is also found at Six Flags over Texas called Rockin Rocket in the Loony Tunes section of the park. The ride appears to look like an Acme Rocket from Road Runner cartoon. Type in Rockin Rocket in the search area and you can find POV videos of this ride.
thats kinda creepy seeing this because when six flags great america (my home park) had the shockwave (which had the same design as GASM) we had a starship looper ride infront of it to.
i miss this ride..about one of the only things i miss about chicago...that and the food.. love this ride because it flips..cant imagine someone loosing it at the flip..and coming back down in it... i remember someone did that on the giant drop..im glad i was on the other side lol.
@bazzabeech i am sorry, the roller coaster in the background is now gone. It was called the Great american scream machine. I LOVE YOU GRATE AMERICAN SCREAM MACHINE
Why did they discontinue this ride?? I always wanted to go on it when i was little but it was always closed? Id really love to know what happened to it if someone can reply!!!
Now i know i'm getting old! The space shuttle and the scream machine are no longer there!! That space shuttle ride was awesome!! Why did they do away with it? It was simple operation with cool inversions. I lost about $20 in change over the years on that ride!
It was probably taken out after the 2007 season. The first time I went to Great Adventure was in 2007 and I remember it being there. I don't recall seeing it in 2008.
Vomit Machine, for sure. I feel sorry for the park workers who have to hose down the cars after someone has had their pukefest - and shut the ride down for 15 minutes. Don't eat lunch before getting on this thing...
I was at great adventure this past sunday. The park was empty until about 2 00. we were able to go on kingda ka about 20 times in a row without waiting. The same with el torro. It was sad to see the rubble of the scream mashine, but life goes on and new coasters will rise. I just wish they would rise at six flags new england and lake compounce.
Sort of high. But upside down - just the way I like my amusement park rides :D Oh, and that coaster! xP Anyone else think the red roller coaster in the background looks pretty promising?
@lovespell2716: It just looks like it is going slow because of the massive counterweights on the other side. It makes the load more balanced which also slows down the movement. However, without them, it would probably be impossible for them to get it that high using the equipment they have set up. It is not in slow mo.
Fucking Hellski. The Russian Cosmonauts were trained on a machine similar to this 30 years ago, to simulate gravity force and weightlessness. Theirs was 10 times faster than this thing.
I went on this ride a couple years ago. They took it down??? It was one of the best rides there. VERY SCARY, you really can't tell how high up it is in this video.
