Hi all, thanks for the support on the video. To clear some things up, regardless of how or why the dog was loose, it put me and my horse in danger, luckily, my horse is very patient and did not harm the dog. Second, i trotted off straight away to 1) get away from the situation and 2) there was a car behind me (that I almost ended up on the bonnet of because of the dog making my horse back up) and I didnt want to hold up traffic. Thanks again :)
clearly this is a wonderful horse but i am curious what would happen if your horse did kick a dog? i definitely don't want that to happen but it would be a shame if you or the horse got in trouble because the dog owner didn't control their animal when you do
In all fairness modern day dog owners do not take responsibility, but they're really good at making excuses. I would say that goes for probably 80% of them. I would like to see more sweet old dogs get adopted instead of the Pitbull mentality running rampant. Regardless of what someone adopts, train it. Loose dogs are usually nuisance, end of story.. it's easy to tell the people on here who are very biased and dog only because they do not take responsibility, everyone else is supposed to work around them and their dog.. it's getting epidemic and it's ridiculous.
What a great and trustful horse. This video gives the opportunity to focus on his ears, to see how he listens to the rider. The work with horses in the police work (and other fields) is so important.
I blame the stupid owner of the dog!!!! If the dog or horse would of got hurt then it would of been down to the prick letting go of the lead. Made me angry seeing that and hearing the distress in the riders voice!! ❤
@@elaineburgess9265 Basically I am a 3 dog owner who unleashes the dogs on street. I Can tell tho, as obvious, that this road is too big to leave dogs like that and when there are horses. One buck and its dead, Can't blame on horse cuz a horse is like a prey to it, so it'll defend itself.
If I horses, trained horses and even backed horses for several decades, I complete agree this boy is extremely well behaved. Any horse would react to a dog coming over like that, whether the dog wanted to play or attack, the horse is a prey animal and its instinct is to escape a predator, which is what a dog is.. I've seen dogs being kicked in the head and being instantly killed by a horse because it was off lead around a horse. So yes, this horse is well behaved and the rider thanking drivers that slowed or stopped to pass is great too.
What a great horse and your training and riding obviously gives your horse confidence. Dog owners need to understand how dangerous it is for their dog, the rider and their horse to allow them to run free and cause an accident. This video shows just why we, as riders, need more off road routes.
Your horse and your riding are a credit to you! You stayed calm in all situations. Not a particularly good area for riding, alot of roadwork but that is what it's like now. Difficult to find good places to hack and certainly not on your doorstep. The wood's looked lovely though. 😁
Exactly, I live out in the country, we have areas to ride like the river, woods, and fields farmers let us use when they're not being used for veggies (usually late autumn and winter we get to use them) but we do indeed need to use a busy road to access these areas. It doesnt help its a narrow road and everyone loves speeding in the countryside.. We had horse signs put up, but they seem to drive faster after putting them up
Well if you bother looking the dog had a leash so it likely pulled hard after it got excited over the horse and the owner got caught off guard, it was clearly just an accident.
My dog is a strong puller and one day she pulled so hard that the lead was pulled out of my hand and she was suddenly loose. So it can happen (luckily only once)
If your smart you only let it happen once.. i sometimes walk my sisters dog and he pulled free when he saw a deer once, i now hold the leash in such a way it grips my arm as well..
Your horse was so calm props to you both Nothing irks me more than an untrained off leash agressive dog when you are on a horse (i love dogs too they are the best like horses but it's to sad to see owner like this who didn't bother to train their dog or apologize to you ) You handled it both so well ☺️
What a beautiful horse! Both of you handled the situation so calmly! People definitely need to keep their dogs on a leash and trained to recall. I absolutely love your rides. It's so beautiful watching the scenery and hearing his trotting! Can't wait to see more!
@ana-bk8kp Even so, owners should be able to recall their dogs! Not just for other's safety, but for the dog's as well! Teaching recall could save that dog's life in many situations!
@@LadyKhaosTheDisorderedWitch yes I do agree on that It was on leash just got out of hands I have my dog trained off and on lead she doesn’t like being far from us and knows to listen to me when calling her plus
@@ana-bk8kp That's awesome! I also have my 4 trained to recall. I grew up around dogs and have had them all my life. I've seen so many dogs be hurt or end up euthanized because of incidents that could've been prevented just by teaching recall. Especially that one video of the dog who attacked the horse pulling a carriage! I don't quite remember if he passed or not, but I know he was really hurt.
@@LadyKhaosTheDisorderedWitch it’s sad that they do happen and a lot can be tho my sisters dog is trained off lead but she only has off lead when nones around at all because he was abused by his last owner and was chained up and watched as owner got new one and just left him chained small so for his safety and others when another animal is near he’s on lead but she only takes him on places that wouldn’t have enough room for like horses and riders to go for off lead just in case and he can be good with other dogs and do recall off lead fine but if he feels he can’t get away on lead he will bark if dog is too close but he wouldn’t bite
The dog looked really happy and curious so thats good! It probably pulled so hard it got off the leash, good thing it wasnt aggresive biting you or the horse .
Glad my street dog has the smarts not to mess with with horse's. I tested him with nabores horse and donkey. He backed off when they started walking. He knew.
I can imagine, wolfs would not just come up to horses like this either, their instinct tells them to stay clear from horses legs. Sadly many dogs just don't seem to have this instinct anymore and just go bonkers, I think it's due to inbreeding and not having enough experience with other dogs and animals as a pup
The first video is exactly the reason I put my dog on a lead when we meet horses, because I know she doesn't like them. Yes, I don't think she would do anything, but I'm not willing to take that risk. It's not fair on the horse or the rider. It's annoying that they didn't appoligise to you
Its been 30 years since I rode..this brought me back to my childhood! You are a VERY polite rider and your horse is really in tune with you! Thanks for this, I got to be 13 again for a few minutes..lol! ❤
You definitely should not be apologising to the woman who opened her car door she should apologise to you. It's her responsibility to check if it's OK to open her car door just like she would with a car coming along the road. What a good horse you have.👍👍
Totally agree...Unfortunately some people don't think or don't care. We have had this happen down the road giving plenty of room way on the grassy side.. a two-lane road and people will go by and throw their trash and their bottles out right there where you are riding not a mile before not a mile after but they think it's funny to throw things at where the horses are. I don't know what's wrong with people anymore.. and... people who are strictly dog people will never understand this, no matter what a dog does, to them it's okay or an excuse, an aggressive dog is an aggressive dog, end of story. First rule of thumb no dogs under the horse's feet/hooves or never around the arena and never in the Stalls.
This happens to me all the time with my bike. I am a cyclist and it really irritates me when people don’t perceive the bike as a full-fledged vehicle, opening the front door and thinking that I will magically have time to brake or somehow turn.
Well trained horse and good rider for that matter. It takes a very special bond between the two to react the way you did when that dog came out of nowhere. And the galloping down the trail when you said "not yet... ok". Throughout the video the "good boy" were especially awesome. Giving praise to the horse or any animal strengthens that bond. Stay frosty!
What a good boy. He was so sensible in all the different situations x various changes, roads x bridle paths dog building site!! You obviously fill him with confidence,he seems happy on his ride, no shying or napping or silliness. You've taught him well. Wish you x he many happy rides together.
Wow Ollie behaved so well big pats! Good job for handling him they really need to keep there dogs on a lead, otherwise looks like a fun hack! Congrats on 100 subs I subbed to you yesterday 🥰
I don’t like to be mean to dogs, but if it’s a problem I’d definitely carry a whip or spray of some sort. A dog can get a bad kick just as easily as it can give a bad bite, better to teach a loose dog some manners than have the horse do it!
@@averycheesypotato A spray can backfires and hit you or your horse. A whip could work as defense but the dog might get really aggressive if it gets hurt.
@@July-nj5sn Some sprays are more like streams than vapour. Bear spray or some pepper sprays- the bear spray is usually legal even where pepper-spray isn’t, but is more potent
the woman blamed the guy without even know what he really did.. "Why did you let it go?!" I don't think he said to himself "oh a horse! I'm going to untie my dog :)" I have a reactive dog too 😂
At first I was kinda confused as to why someone would ride around in the middle of a town, but when you see how well behaved and desensitized this horse is to it all, it does kinda make sense. Both for the horses mind and the riders overal safety in the long run. The more your horse is used to things that could be scary, the safer it is. Which is shown in the way the horse handled the dog. Very nice :D
It probably has to do with there's nowhere else for them to go. It seems to get to the woods to have a good canter they have to go through town, then again to get home.
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you for taking us along for the ride. It looked like an enjoyable time and your horse is so behaved! People riding horses in town is not something we see in America. Very cool thank you
People have already commented on the dogs, but i feel like it needs to be said more that: horses in the UK have more rights on the road, than the people who neglect your hack!
i almost got attacked by two dogs somebody let run free around their neighborhood when i was visiting my dad in illinois. i managed to get away from them without being injured but it was terrifying- never, EVER let your dogs run free without supervision, and if you have a dog you cannot physically control, you shouldn't have that dog. in this case, it seems the dog had a lead but got away from the owner(s), they should not have such an aggressive dog if they are unable to prevent it from running off.
Some horses are like that if they haven't been desensitised from a young age. We have a 36 year old mare on our yard that poops herself at a piece of tarpaulin. Yet my nearly 7 year old wears it.
Remember folks. There are no bad dogs, only idiots who don't train them. That being said, my sister has a MEAN horse, hates dogs. Doesn't try to throw you or buck, but if he can, he'll grab the dog in his teeth and YEET then as hard as he can over his back, then he tries to stomp them into the dirt.
It seems like the guy with the border collie let the dog go so she could run at her other owner (the woman walking a bit in front of them). This is so dangerous if you have a reactive dog or if your dog doesn't listen to you whenever. If there wasn't a horse, there could have been a car, someone on a bike, someone with an agressive dog, etc. Very irresponsible behaviour. Glad neither your horse nor their dog got injured! They should have apologized at the very least...
I do that sometimes with my dogs. But, it's so important to check your surroundings first, and not just let go. And even if they're well trained, I'd never do it in an area with that much traffic.
The dog owners were definitely in the wrong but at least their dog was good enough to come back when they called it . Could have been a lot worse. Glad ur both okay tho
At least they first people were trying to get their dog and it was on a leash but may have slipped. Doesn't look like they actually wanted him to roam free. Edit: I'd be scared to death by this bus driving alonside me soooo close. I mean the horse just needs to trip or be scared or anything and the next blink I'd be lying under that bus... I think I could never get used to riding in a village or anything😅 Kudos to you and your horse
❤ What a great horse you have! Definitely not a plod but nice and forward going. Brings back some beautiful memories. Actually I’m tearing up a bit 😭💔 I became very unwell and my illness has progressed to the point where I’m wheelchair reliant and mostly housebound and bedridden. Unless there’s a miracle or a medical cure there’s no hope of improvement sadly. It was lovely watching your video just the familiar sounds of hooves and the wonderful creaking of leather. Total bliss! And your horse is clearly a very happy boy. Loved watching him snacking along the way just those little things that brought me memories. Thanks for sharing your video. Yes I was fortunate enough to live on a small island when I was involved with horses and of course I started mucking out etc and learned to ride when I was still at primary school. I’m 51 now so it was a while ago. But I continued to ride through the years. Back then drivers were considerate and roads were very quiet unless it was the holiday seasons when the trekking centre was busy and the place was full of tourist’s. I had the joy of keeping my favourite horse from autumn to late spring and I had a great time. The place you’re riding is more built up. But when I left the island I experienced similar issues with drivers coming way too close from up behind me and hitting 60 or more! It’s shocking! I haven’t had the nightmare dog situation that you experienced. Absolutely shocking! Like I say you have a great horse there and you were able to hold him nicely and calmly. Well done! I don’t think I would have been so calm as you. The bridle paths were interesting and certainly far from boring. You could tell that your horse was enjoying himself. Oh my gosh the bus was shocking! Unbelievable
That bus should not have tried to get around you, sheesh. That was waaaay too close. That driver needs a reminder of what it's like to have a bus go by that closely while on the side of a road.
This is why I'm so glad my horse is good with dogs. He will run straight at them if I tell him to, even bite if he feels the need BUT he's also very friendly with my own dogs and kind to them. When it comes to dogs, it's so important to get them used to it.
My horse is very protective of me, any dogs or even cats that come near me while I'm working with him, he will snap at them.. I did give him into trouble about the cat though, I like cats.. Though tharmt cat has since died. She was murdered by the council, who didn't even apologise after hitting her. We live in a village so its a 20mph area, the cat usually gets off the road when cars come hence why I know they were doing at least 50-60 though our village. And then people wonder why I prefer animals over humans.. 🤷♀️
I live in Canada in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and surprised a wolverine while riding on an old logging road. Wolverines can be exceedingly nasty and this one was. It snarled and leapt forward and I thought for sure my horse was going to get a nasty bite. I also thought my horse would shy away or leap back but I guess after all the years of riding in the mountains and encountering other wild life that he wasn’t to worried. Instead he lifted up his front foot and clunked the wolverine in the head with his hoof which sent the wolverine back into the bush a short ways. It just sat there and growled after that hit and we trotted off. Anyway, something to be said for calm well trained horses. Your horse handles the road and vehicles really well. Mine isn’t fond of vehicles at all but then we don’t ride around them much. With the exception of some country roads horses aren’t allowed on the roads here.
the horse hooves clattering sounds abit asmr and soothing to me and the different perspective and view on a horse is intresting, I myself have never ridden a horse since i struggle to get on them being 5'1.
Your horse is well trained and your horse is also brave unlike other horses I'm gonna get one and i hope mine is also brave oh and can I ask you that how many horses you have and what are there names j would love to know thanks love your vids have a good day❤
I don’t do this ride very often anymore and stick to the mountains mainly since I moved yards! However, still run into problems with dogs/cars/bikes/people wherever I am unfortunately! xx
Jeezus, that dog is very much untrained, it has horrendous recall abilities if any at all. Not too mention it got extremely lucky your horse was pretty calm. Hope those owners have decided to get that pup trained now
