I used to really dislike the Blood Angel's and Dante too. They seemed to dumb, perfect and self important to me. I just couldn't care for years and I never understood why they were so popular. Then I actually read the books 'Dante' and 'Devastation of Baal' Rather then just reading about them from a wiki I got to see what their personalities were like and how they did stuff. I fell in love with Dante as a character. People treat him like a living legend but deep down he's pretty lonely. All his original brothers are dead and hes so old and tired that he just wants to stop and relax. He just feels like he can't and hes always end guessing himself in his own head. When I first read the lore on him I thought he sounded like a pretentious goody too shoes. Actually reading from his perspective helped a lot Also the video totally undersold the chapters reuniting thing. The Tyranids were coming for their Primarchs old homewold. Over 30 chapters from Sanguinius' gene seed showed up to fight a major Tyranid fleet. The book is great. You had 29,000 space marines in one place for the first time in thousands of years and they almost lost. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride

that final battle with the swarm lord... and the Khorne deamon attack on the moon... damn those scenes are still with me..

I listened to the audiobook of The Devastation of Baal a few months ago and it was amazing I loved every second of it. I actually picked it up due to similar reasons thinking Dante was some holier-than-thou figure but boy was I pleased to be wrong

@@wangchung2157 that's a great audiobook. You could get the same effect reading it yourself. I think Guy Haley is good enough with tone that you dont need a reader to spell it out for you. Sometimes I think I listened to his Konrad Curze book as an audiobook, but no. I distinctly remember reading it myself. I just had such a clear image in my head of the sound, tempo and tone But yeah. I've been a fan or warhammer for 20 years and as long as I can remember they came across as really pretentious to me. They were this hyper noble, cultured chapter but who were supposedly more effective berzerkers then the world eaters and other known maker monster. And also had 2 crippling gene-flaws that were super tragic. They felt like a faction with elements that didnt fir together and honestly I resented them the way others did for the Ultramarines. You said it best. It's a vibe of holier-than-thou. Dante without getting his perspective came across as conceited and self important when I read lore where he assumed he was the prophesied warrior who'd save the Emperor. Now though. After the books Dante and Devastation of Baal, hes one of my fave characters in the setting

Becoming Blood Angel tend to more painful process than other chapters. Not because more cruel training or something, but because with geneseed your body morphs to resemble Sanguinius. People living in Baal tend to be short, weak and mutated, but in final process your body will change. Your bones will crack, reshape and readjust, your skin changes, you will grow.. You go in as hunchback mutant and come out as an Angel.

There's also the fact that they aren't ment to be awake during their time in the sarcophagus and those that do wake up tend to go mad pretty fast.

There are very few space marines that can remember Dante not being the chapter master of the bloodangels. While he is not famous for being the most skilled fighter it says a lot that he survived that long and he is a decent fighter for astartes standards. There probably isn't a space marine who doesn't know his name because he has been chapter master of one of the original chapters for as long as they know.

He's a bit like Master Chief in Halo, or Saurfang in Warcraft and World of Warcraft - he's lived longer than anyone thought he should by luck on top of what every other space marine has but the universe and his sense of morality and honor refuse to let him die.
