Connections 3 | Help Me to Be What You Created Me to Be | Aug 11, 2024
In Week Three of our series Dr. Larry Baucom and Dr. Troy Doucet's dialogue on obedience. The focus is on living a life of continued spiritual growth and obedience to God, as instructed in Philippians 2:12-16. The Dialogue unfolds with three poignant prayers.
Prayer 1: Lord, help me to continue a life of obedience. (Verse 12)
The discussion emphasizes the importance of ongoing obedience, not just when others are watching but even more so in solitude. Paul encourages believers to keep working out their salvation with fear and trembling, highlighting that it is God who works within us to fulfill His purpose; something we should be afraid to miss.
Prayer 2: Lord, help me to quit whining when things do not go my way. (Verse 14)
St. Paul teaches that Christ-followers should strive to live without grumbling or arguing, which leads to becoming blameless and pure, shining like stars in a crooked generation. The importance of attitude in obedience is stressed, with a call to grow in Christ rather than groan under life's challenges.
Prayer 3: Lord, help me to become what you created me to be...a shining star (Verse 15)
Dr. Baucom concludes with the metaphor of shining like stars, giving God’s light to the world. The connection with God is portrayed as a source of transformation, enabling us to become what God created us to be-light-bearers in a dark world.
Illustrations: Personal stories, including a marriage counseling analogy and a reflection on a youthful mistake involving stolen tires (you’ll want to see this), serve to illustrate the need for ongoing reflection, correction, and connection to God. These stories highlight how even small acts of disobedience can hinder spiritual growth and the importance of making mid-course corrections through reflection and connection with God.
Call to Action: The Pastors encourage the congregation to reflect on areas of their lives-relationships, finances, careers, health-and surrender them to God. The message emphasizes that through reflection, connection, and submission to God, believers can find joy and become the shining stars they are meant to be. The dialogue ends with a reassurance of God’s love and a reminder of the importance of living in and as His light.
