www.vladtv.com - Lord Jamar sat down with VladTV and shared his thoughts on sports commentator and former Phoenix Suns player Charles Barkley's comments about African-Americans thinking there's such a thing as "acting black" and its origins in ignorance. Jamar feels there is truth to these comments, saying he himself has been accused of "acting/speaking white," and that there are certain things African-Americans view as "White" that they shouldn't.
Check out the clip above.

I wonder why SOME blacks are so attracted to pretty things; fancy clothes, expensive shoes etc, but live in sub-par conditions, I mean your main focus should be getting rich, not just looking like you have money..

It's a common mentality amongst the "have-nots" though. I don't think you understand that. It's a form of escapism. It's a sense of wanting to at least APPEAR that you have things so you can FEEL good about yourself. It's a bit deeper but that's too long for RU-vid. Dont be so easy to dismiss it though. Not saying you don't have a point, but try to look at things objectively cuz it's easy to not understand what you or somebody isn't used to or haven't experienced. Of course we dont know each other and im sure you have pain & struggles like everybody else but there's always someone who has it "better" and someone "worse".

All my life I have heard that I sound white ... But recently at 52 years old I was told by another black woman that she felt that I want it to be white. I am a black woman, I am proud to be a black woman and I don't want to be anything else. At times I am disappointed and even ashamed of some of the things that black people do, but they're still my people. Learning about our history I'm starting to understand why we act the way we do...but I still love my black people. My mother was very big on annunciation and our diction, our mannerism period... From eating to answering the phone. I hated it when I was young but I so appreciate it now. I have conversations and people think that I have been to college, they ask are you a teacher, was your mother a teacher...No she wasn't she just taught us well, because of my mother and her being adamant about how we carried our selves, I go to benefits, parties, the opera... I do a lot of things that a lot of black people consider white things, and I do them with very prominent white people... founders of banks, hospitals shit like that. I am very black and I can get down one way or the other no that.✌🏾

IN MY OPINION (let me be VERY clear that this is only my opinion) one of the main reasons why blacks current situation is bad is due to ourselves. We as blacks are quick to discredit one another and for some of us who already lack drive and self esteem it does nothing to help us. If all teens hear from adults in their families and in school is that they are gonna be failures no matter what then they tend to say fuck it and focus on what makes them feel good. Which for the most part is not good. Partying, drinking, excessive sex, fighting, etc. That's the same reason that I hear a lot of black people say they don't go to church anymore. Too much prejudging and alienation. Doesn't matter what household or establishment, we are tearing each other down, while blaming "the white man". For example, I know at least a few people are going to bash me for sharing my thoughts. That's the mentality I'm speaking of. With all of this new found awareness of this age of social-media, I refuse to believe that us blacks are lost causes. We need to begin focusing on the things that we are doing right. So many black kids are told not to go into sports or music, but the same amount if not more white kids pursue music and sports. Yet no one talks about that fact. All the average child sees is successful entertainers. And the same adults that would steer them away from entertainment, praise these rappers and ball players. No one is sitting down with these kids and showing them other options. Black people at this time aren't being shown the reward for being model citizens. Especially with police officers shooting us down at the drop of a dime and members of the media and politics blaming us. I agree with Charles Barkley, but I don't see Chuck trying to teach these kids any different. Only those of us who care to see things change should be given a platform to share their opinion of society at large. I'm one of the many people that want to see things change and speak to young members of my family and neighborhood to inform them. How many of you actually try to speak to people about the things you feel are wrong with society? If you aren't a part of the solution, then you're a part of the problem.

What makes someone a slave, "theyre dependent on someone to provide for them." Every baby is a slave, got it. No, a slave is a person that can be bought and sold like property. Thats what the word means, we're using it to describe things it doesn't actually describe. No one is forcing anyone to buy overpriced tennis shoes.

That’s a specific kind of slave technically called "chattel” slavery. Not all slavery is chattel slavery. For example, debt peonage is considered a form of slavery, though the slaves in that instance cannot be bought or sold. They are not owned technically.

Funny thing about this video. I stated that there was no such thing as acting white/black but people who agreed with Jamar said otherwise in another recent video of his with that Iggy chick and him discussing the way she talks and acts. Now in this video he is stating the same thing I said. Its very ignorant to say someone is acting black/white because its impossible to do. Its something that simply doesn't exist. People cannot wrap their heads around it though because they have a very flawed and hypocritical logic.

I don't know what other people in the comments were saying. However, I remember Jamal saying that that Iggy uses a down south rap style and other than an Australian rap style. It had nothing to do with talking and it had nothing to do with difference of speech due to race. It was about taking a distinctive rap style from a area that she is no where close to as oppose to representing a style and songs that represent Australia more. Eminem choose to rap in his own style and manner instead of trying to sound like every other black rapper and it made him widely famous and arguably one of the best rappers made. Iggy merely copied from someone and there is nothing unique about her.

tman229 They were basically saying the exact opposite of what he was saying in this video while praising him in the very sense. I just find it very ironic that he is saying the same thing I was saying and those people who left comments saying she was "pretending to be black" or "acting black". I basically said the same thing you are saying but according to them I was "sensitive" and "ignorant".

I can relate to this topic from here in New Zealand where we experience a similar scenario - many Maori (indigenous, brown skinned) people have also bought into the stereotypes put upon us by the white colonialists ie. that we are 'supposed' to be staunch, ignorant, happy go-lucky, tough, poorly spoken, musical etc etc - if we are well spoken, highly educated, sober!, academic etc then somehow we are 'less Maori' - WTF!!!???

Wow, Brent Strathdee-Pehi I know this is not exactly the topic but Thank you for shedding light on what the name of the indigenous brothas and sistas in New Zealand is. I never knew the name was Maori. You learn something new every day. :) I got a new wrinkle in my brain. As far as Charles Barkley and the like are concerned...I really don't give a shit about them one way or the other, being angry at their comments ain't puttin no money in my pocket. Brownie Points from Whitey or not...he had a few points in his statements, but i choose to keep on pushin...i choose to lead by example the time for talk is over and being angry at sellouts and the like is over, you have to make a conscious choice to be the change you want to see, if people choose to stay ignorant that is the problem of the person. You can't help anyone if you don't become the person you want to be. Barkley still can't talk (in the words of Madea) Properer! LOL. And that cat has a job on the tell lie vision...so i know skies the limit for me. I speak way better than his ass. I don't believe any thing that i hear or see on that thing. And that is our problem to a certain extent, besides Racist White Supremacy We believe in that damn idiot box and all the lying images therein. .

I'm tired of people asserting that "proper" use of the English dialect is somehow indicative of intelligence, or a lack thereof. There have been tons of books written on the etymological differences between African, and European languages. It is also been proven that even when we English improperly, we are still speaking it properly. Doing away with unnecessary pronouns, suffixes, and adverbs (i.e, "intelligent subversion of the language). As sub Saharan Africans, we spoke multiple languages before the middle passage, and the Latin and Greek based structure of the English language goes against thousands of years of genetic influence, and muscle memory. Simply put, no that matter how long we are in the Western world, english is not our language, and we still speak it quite well...

Around and around in a circle they go. Same old themes, same old discussions, every generation. Same old story. It never ends. No progress. Sad to see a doomed people fizzle out in pointless discussions. The point of no return was passed long ago. Self depreciating, self degrading culture. A dead tree with no roots. Not because it doesnt have roots. The roots are denied, rejected and cut.

Some Black people are ignorant and will say you're not Black enough because you read a lot and they don't. They often call conscious Black people like Jamar Hoteps and use the word in a negative way , not realizing Hotep means " Peace ". I have to disengage from people like that. I can't.....

It may just be me but I kind of concur when some interpret being articulate with the english language as sounding " white ". Because that dialect is foreign to african people and is definitely the tongue of our mortal enemy and not of any authenticity of our ethnic originality. So although it may be useful due to our current state, its my opinion it shouldn't be held to any profound regard when many of us as black people find the true african way of speaking nothing but humorous when its brought in our presence.

To a degree Barkley is right. I myself have been accused of talking like a white person when I was young in school. But I was brought up, even in the hood, to talk with proper grammar by my parents. What is so wrong with speaking proper, why do I have to use 'slang' and 'ebonics' to be considered black? It's ridiculous & ignorant to think you can't be black and speak well.

When I lived in Cincinnati, early Aughts, the black kids in my apartment complex would tease each other: "Nigga you white, you white!" Not an uncommon thing, but as it were, a crisis of identity. This comes with the separation of a people from their culture. HOWEVER... This is not exclusive to black Americans. So many of our other poorer factions, of a lighter complexion, have undergone the same separation from culture. This is why the white/black paradigm is bullshit, something we've been told in order to drive a wedge. This is why hip-hop became so prevalent with lower class white teenagers. (No, I'm not talking about wealthy suburban whites... This popular myth denotes a demographic that is smaller than a tremendous amount of lower-class rural white teenagers.) Hip-hop IS a culture, a reclaiming of things of sorts but also a development of new cultural norms. Reclaiming lost cultural identity is an arduous and never-ending task. I am reminded of the history of the banjo and how it has only been the last decade or so that black American academics and preservationists like the Carolina Chocolate Drops have managed to salvage what was lost of that history. Which is the battle some wage, and something Barkley has hit on before: No matter what we identify as individually, we must use our minds to recall the things that we come from. Knowledge of self!

How Charles Barkley said what he stated made it a issue as well as his reoccurring ridicule he has for black people and more specifically black athletes, despite the fact he never speaks on the origin of these problems that were ingrained into our mentality severely from slavery by white people.

Vlad I'm a mixed Latino Catholic with Afro-Cuban roots but would take me for being white if you seen me, I'm born and raised in New York. I do not consider myself a member of a political party but I generally lean conservative. When I was young I listened to groups such as Brand Nubian without really understanding the lyrics, all I knew was the beats were fly, and the hooks flowed. I'm 32 now and love and respect lord Jamal because I grew up with a lot of guys just like him so even when I know he's being hypocritical and completely wrong IMO I still listen and get a laugh because watching these videos I feel like I'm listening to me and my friends having a conversation because, one thing lord Jamar is, is being straight up real with no holds barred. Lord Jamar ain't changing for nobody wether it's right or wrong he's genuinely just keeping it real and that's why I've always liked him and the rest of the Brand Nubian. Keep doing what you doing brother I ain't mad at ya

People, white, yellow & black, talk black & dress black - so what. There's a black man in the White House, & Directing Hollywood movies, top fashion designers, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Arthur Ashe, Dustin Brown...reached the height of what USED TO BE white elite sports - thankfully that day is long gone. Let's all move on together & live in harmony.
