People seem to forget Floyd's been a boxer for almost two decades, most people involved in martial arts as an profession for that long are not going to be the most fluent readers out loud. Even with Floyd's great defence, I've seen him take some heavy shots in his past fights. You can clearly see the effect it's had on Floyd in interviews where he pauses mid speech and has trouble remembering things (He usually calls one of his co-workers to remind him)

Not only that but certain books are quite expensive, if you want a serious library you will need a lot of money. Now if you chose the ability to read there is no guarantee you will be able to amass that net worth. So the smart person would take the money, then hire a tutor to learn how to read and write. I'm neither educated, nor rich. However, I'd rather have money, then book smarts any day. When you're hungry, money puts food in your mouth, not words. It's no illusion, just facts.

What you do with the knowledge is the most important aspect of attaining it. There are people who know how to read who are flipping burgers; Floyd can't read but he has found his life calling, who do you think is leading a more fulfilling life? Reading is overrated when you're reading for entertainment over substance, which is what most of us do anyway. Lord Jamar is right, he should go around the world telling poor people that the lack of money means nothing because money is an illusion. In his reality you don't need money to buy food and shelter, or clothing. In his world growing up in the projects to poor parents affords you the same comforts as his kids have, that live in the burbs and go to private school; which he can do because he understands the power of illusions and being rich is the equivalent to being a great magician.

One of the realest moments in this video is the cribs reference. One of my older friends(in his 50s now) said something similar to what Jamar said. Back when Cribs was one of the popular MTV shows he'd often remark about how he has yet to see one of these entertainers show off a library or collection of books. And like Jamar, he also mentioned the references to Scarface dvds/memorabilia.

I would rather have the money. Money=power. Floyd Mayweather not only has money, he has real power in his sport. He has his own company and I think that is particularly relevant for black people. In my opinion, Mayweather is a shining example of how to succeed in life, despite not having a formal education. I would take the money. Education usually is the key to financial stability. But having an education doesn't guarantee anything. There are plenty of people with a college degree who are out of work, and worried about how their bills are going to get paid. I would rather rich and worried about not being able read, and whatever problems come with that. Then to have an education and be worried about how I'm going to provide for my family.

I agree with L Jamar for the most part but just because Mayweather is not a good reader does not mean he cannot comprehend what is written on paper. I'm sure he understood what that "drop" was talking about, plus he does have family and people who can read and probably like most famous people have attorneys to interpret legal contracts. That's why people have attorneys to review and respond to their contracts/legal dealings and that includes 50 cents. I think Mayweather can learn to read if he wants to but he has more money than most people who can read and the bottom line is we go to work to make money.
