An outspoken critic of Brexit, Lord Heseltine’s political career has spanned over five decades. Serving in both the Cabinets of Thatcher and Major, Lord Heseltine was Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State from 1995- 97. Throughout his political career, Lord Heseltine has been a proponent of Conservative modernisation. His support for the regeneration of Liverpool in the early 1980s and opposition to the Poll Tax of 1990, resulted in his eventual alienation from the Thatcher administration. Lord Heseltine was Treasurer of the Union sixty-five years ago this Trinity, going on to serve as its President the term after.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Heseltine will be remembered more so than many of his contemporaries. As a Statesman he remained committed to certain consistent considerations..formed as he mentions through historic realism and realistic reasoning. I fear for our current crop of politicians who and by profile is garnered through social media polls rather than conviction led politics. People in latter age tend to be more reflective rather than motivated. It is to Oxfords preeminence that would engage him to a packed audience

A decent, one nation Tory. Was out of step with the right wing Thatcher. Fair play to him, he stuck to his principles and resigned over Westland and told Thatcher where to stick it. Went to Liverpool and did good work there getting investment in the city as Thatcher & Co weren't interested in Liverpool. Came very close to becoming PM in 90 when he challenged her, but fell short once Major came in to the running. A Tory grandee now and a decent guy for a Tory.

He has an impressive knowledge of history and his place in it. Furthermore, his analysis of Brexit is a rational, logical and realistic evaluation of what life outside will mean for Britain. A marginal power, diminished, adrift and with fading influence, buffeted around on the tides of bigger forces. He is wise and sees things clearly. On another note, the questions from the students at the end were very unimpressive, they were no match for Hezza 🤝😎.

Eamonn O'Connor= well said. To those people who pose the question about 'sovereignty' they clearly failed to catch a powerful TV programme (about 2 months ago) where Michael Portillo interviewed Michael Heseltine (and many more, including Nicholas Soames - Winston Churchill grandson) and when the sovereignty question came up Lord Heseltine provided a powerful example of wisdom and intelligence by replying that sovereignty and power are inextricably linked. He provided a basic and most effective example by saying that 'the man in the desert is sovereign, BUT POWERLESS'. Lord Heseltine , throughout his political career, has consistently shown clarity of vision, commitment to the Britain self interest and national stability in order to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the British people. Most of us will not maintain his clarity of vision and conviction when we will get to his age...if we will get to his age. One may not agree with him, but one cannot refute his political standing (since the 1950s), vast knowledge and experience, and his incredible intelligence.

I did not experience the exchange with Hitchens but I suspect that rather than simply drawing attention to the way in which failure of diplomacy by governments led to young soldiers dying (the Heseltine position) Hitchens probably said young people should refuse the call to defend their country in time if war. That would certainly lead to Heseltime accusing Hitchens of being unpatriotic.

@wincav
@wincav 4 года назад
@@alexrose5993 Hello: Look at the questions for Steve Bannon after his comments and you will see what I mean. It is clear to me the students have not had a lot of life experience to understand what they are talking about (hence la, la, land). In America we see similar attitudes with people coming out of higher education (where most of the educators have significant socialist views). The students are immersed in this line of thinking and after a few years view this as gospel. Perhaps you understand the ramifications of only getting "one side of the story". Not all students will "grow up" as they age but many will recognize the impact this has had on them as they navigate life. Sadly, this socialist breeding ground clouds the thinking of many young minds since "it make so much sense" yet in reality is a disaster waiting to happen, IE Venezuela. You have to understand that in order to allow most people of the world to prosper you need to remove the obstacles that hold them back. You need to reward for hard work not punish. Yes, there are people born into this world that are not given a fair shake (mentally retarded, etc.) and society needs to help. Unfortunately, there are evil people in this world who will put a knife in your back the moment you give them a hug. RU-vid: Dinesh D'Souza and learn from him. You will not hear this in a classroom. He may not change a persons thinking but he will give a different perspective on important issues. Alex, if you are a student at Oxford (which college ?) make the most of the opportunity you are given. Good luck to you! Thank you for reading my thoughts.

He also plays the moral card. And many of his contentions are contrived or circular. He is a convincing speaker, but then the world is full of dangerous eloquent fools. Margret Thatcher chucked him out, because he is a loose gun and likewise with Teresa May it seems. We joined the United Nations, which was supposed to end all wars, and look what a toothless organisation that turned out to be. It was the huge support of America, in men, equipment and money in WW2, that enabled the UK to overcome the Nazis, and free Europe. The UK also had great support from the commonwealth, and of course, it was Russia (once again with material support from America) that actually crushed the Nazis. Lets hope we have closer ties with our friends, especially, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand after we leave the EU.

People think that EU farm subsidies goes to poor farmers who are finding it rather difficult to survive. They couldn't be more wrong, where the vast majority of the money goes to the wealthy up to the super rich in Europe. I find it very amusing whenever I listen to the Euro fanatic Heseltine speaking against Brexit. One point that he never reveals on his shows, and one that LBC presenters never question his Lordship about, is that the multi millionaire with an estimated 300 million pound fortune, has received over the years many millions in EU farm subsidies from us as EU tax payers - of which the UK is one of the few EU28 that is a net contributor. You will never hear O'Brien or other media hacks reveal these facts, and neither Heseltine himself informing listeners of the conflict of interest concerning his property empire that includes over a 1000 acres of land in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. Subsidies that amount to income support should not benefit those that are stinking rich. However the EU refuses to address this fact and that tens of billions of euros are given every year to farmers who are extremely wealthy, of which Heseltine is one of them. Heseltine once said to a reporter, the fact that he is wealthy and receives these huge sums of money from the EU is irrelevant. Typical of the ruling elite who are anti Brexit.

@tn_onyoutube8436
@tn_onyoutube8436 Год назад
@ Chris saltaur- a little late to the show, but to be clear - nobody with any brains ever thought subsidies were to help poor farmers (so I guess most Brexiteers do think that). Subsidies are about managing the market and the land, giving incentives to grow certain crops or to not grow anything in certain years, or indeed any years sometimes. And guess what - they are heavily dependent on how much land you have, how much you leave fallow, how much you turn over to other uses, and therefore by definition it is the richest, biggest farms and farmers and landowners who get the most subsidies. There is no issue, no lie, no cover up to address. Sounds like yet another of the many incorrect attributions that motivated so many Brexiteers to vote to throttle our economy and ruin our markets. The others of course just wanted less foreigners- and just how is that going? Highest immigration in decades, but coming from Africa and Asia instead of Europe.

Lord Heseltine continues by saying that he hasn't changed his mind and will continue to stay in that position within the Conservative party, that he has fought the Conservative party most entrenched battles (...and those of us who still remember the 80s and beyond can vouch for his claim) and will continue to do so. Lord Heseltine vehemently stresses: "BUT I will never sacrifice British self interest for narrow party purposes".Lord Heseltine reminds us that: "A PM is one of 650 people, the only thing that singles them out is that they can command a majority in the House of Commons, if they can't they are just one of 650 and that i suspect is the position in which Mr Johnsons will find himself with no parliamentary majority, and it will be abuse of our Constitution to then think that you can take Britain out of Europe despite the House of Commons." Michael Heseltine also adds that: "..Large number of Conservatives will not vote for a no deal Brexit, they will vote for whatever party appears to stand behind a European policy [...] asserting the fact that they will vote for Britain national self interest, despite the loyalty they feel for the Conservative party.." His view: ..".. large numbers of people will vote for what they believe to be Britain national self interest and therefore for a candidate that represents the European destiny to which this Country has been committed since the 1960s" Lord Heseltine states that he would be happy with a solution that leaves Britain at the heart of Europe "...the position of every Conservative leader I have worked for....we are where we are today, the most likely scenario today is continued uncertainty but in the event of continued uncertainty the worst thing to do is to add to that uncertainty by actually cutting the ground from underneath our economic strength which depends in huge measure on our membership of the European Community." Throughout history Great Britain has always been at the forefront of many incredible things and events. Perhaps, now, if 'leavers' are allowed to set our Country back to the middle ages, Great Britain will set another (unfortunate this time) precedent by becoming the first former Colonising Country to become a 'Colony' of its former Colonies, given Trump vision of the world and economics.

He still talks about being "at the top table " " I am doing it for you, the next generation " He doesn't realise that however much the EU has done , it is a peace exersise. It is not a fully balanced union. Germany and France set the agenda. They have protected their banks, they have built debt, their policies are policies of "put every decision off " This man is not a thinking leader, he is a follower. A good soldier who will follow orders. But no brains when it comes to solving the major problems facing our next generation. Housing, Youth unemployment, Migration, Government Debt. These issues can not be solved by consensus. They must be solved by using the same methods as Margaret Thatcher. Monetarism. And if the others don't want to go down this path we, the United Kingdom will have to part with them and seek our own destiny. It will be our choice. It is our choice. I can understand Michael's reasoning, but I believe his premises are wrong. The many wars and conflicts in Europe were nearly all caused by the failure of nation states, not always democratic states on the continent, to respect each other’s sovereignty. The EEC, European Economic Community, was a very successful association of sovereign, democratically accountable nation states. That worked very well. Until the odious Maastricht Treaty determined to transform this successful association into a superstate; to usurp the sovereignty of the nations. The old continental problem, which has led to so many wars. We need mutually respectful sovereign national democracies, accountable to their peoples. Not a Napoleonic superstate, with an unworkable currency, dictated by a Brussels bureaucracy.

@ Customs evolve as society does - or should we all still live in caves and club women over the head? Migration has existed since man had legs - countries such as the USA, Australia, Canada or even cities like London would not be the same without it. Actually now if you want to eat sausages you can do almost anywhere as products are sold all over the world. I remember when you could only get unflavoured crisps in France, for example

@ One could say the same about Cape Town, NY, New Orelans, Moscow or Sao Paolo and none of those are to do with being in a political union with other countries. Also, these issues existed well before 1973 what with immigration from ex-colonies and gangsters so I don´t see how being in the EU is to blame.
