The tragedy of Boromir was that he WAS a hero, especially to his people. He shouldered a lot of the burden of leading his people during a time of near ceaseless war. Gondor was the frontline protection against Mordor. The fight had been building there for a lot longer than any of the other places. He was desperate for a way to save his people, he saw the man who should be his King ignore, (to his mind), and shun their people in order to be with the Elves. Boromir’s first loyalty was always going to to his people. If he had to take the Ring to save his people, so be it. Angry and despairing, he was ripe for the Ring to corrupt. His death is heartbreaking in the books especially when you see where he came from later.

Re: The Elvish door at Moria. It was Elvish because there was a relationship between the Noldoran Elves of that region led by Celebrimbor (who made all of the other rings of power), and the Dwarves. They shared a lot of crafting knowledge and became allies, and the door was made with the "friend" riddle to signify that. Great episode guys!

It is subtle Nick, but you can see Legolas walking normal above the snow while the rest of them are struggling through it. I love that they kept that detail.

Nick the moment you're talking about with Legolas walking over the snow is in the movie they have an explicit shot showing him walking on the snow as everyone else is trying to trudge through it

It kinda gets overlooked how great The Fellowship Of The Ring is in comparison to the other two. Also shoutout to Nick for reminding everyone that Sean Bean was the Bond villain agent 006 in Golden Eye. I feel like people under the age of 20 will only recognise him as Ned Stark.

I finished Return of the King thirty minutes ago. I love this series so much that I went ahead, and, while it's hard to say, I think that Lord of the Rings is better than any of the Star Wars trilogies.

My favorite movie trilogy, rewatching these reaffirmed it for me.

As someone who has always had rescues as pets, I'm here to add some love for Bill the Pony. He is only in the movies as an easter egg for those who read the books. He was a great companion & friend to Sam and he carried Frodo from Weather top when he couldn't walk. I wish they had explained him a little better, but I get cutting all that to save time.

I'm actually mad that Elyse didn't mention or didn't even know that 3 of the 13 Dwarves in the Hobbit are among those who were slaughtered in Moria and you can see them. *Oin* gets eaten by the big octopus monster outside Moria. *Balin* is in the tomb that Gimli mourns then stands on top of. And lastly, *Ori* is the one who wrote in the book that Gandalf reads from. Gandalf takes the book off of Ori's skeleton. Just a cool little tragic easter egg i would've loved to see the others react to

I've seen this movie years ago and I wasn't that invested but this time I loved it. One of the 1st scenes on disk two where the whole fellowship walks over the Hill 1 by 1 and the big orchestra version of the theme plays teared me up

Loved this also Nick missed one of my favourite lines from Aragorn "They will look for his coming for the White tower but he will not return."

I keep finding myself talking to the screen like it's one of the times me and all my friends gushed about LOTRs. This is a great cast for this in review.

My super lame claim to fame. I did maintenance work on the outside of Tolkien’s old summer house in the north east of england.

During the reunion the cast did last week Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen did a scene from when they are resting in front of the 3 doors, some of my favorite lines in the movie and very poignant given current events. I got goosebumps hearing him say it again. FRODO: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.... GANDALF: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us...

if anyone is interested, the cast of LOTR just did a quarantine reunion video chat. it was super cool

It's funny that Tim was onto Nick from 27:54 to 28:05. (27:41 for the leadin) For the record that's a fantastic scene. I think in the bonus features I watched once it said that Sean Bean was so terrified of flying up there on a helicopter...and because of that it gave his speech a lot more added weight because he was terrified to fly back down.

I can't believe I'm gonna be that guy, but I'm pretty sure Gandalf's passivity to events even with his knowledge has to do with his nature as a more ascended being on Middle Earth. You'll notice people refer to him as Mithrandir later, which is more or less a true identity as a sort of vehicle and ambassador to the "gods" of Tolkien's universe. With that, there's rules he has to obey to not overextend his power, which includes not nudging people too far in one direction. He's also very old and learned to a point where you could almost call him prescient. Wizards be punctual I hear. I prefer to leave the Silmarillion rabbit hole out of my perspective of the trilogy, so it's best to just think of him as a willing and active participant in the play that is these puny mortals' lives, though he doesn't have to be.

Notice how the breaking of the fellowship in this movie is mirrored at the end of season 1 of Game of Thrones as all the Starks get separated.

Honestly been looking forward to this all week. Great podcast fellowship!

Galadriel's hubby's played by Marton Csokas, a new zealand actor. Yes, he's played A LOT of bad guy roles...most notably in The Bourne Supremacy, xXx & The Equalizer with Denzel... he also played that crazy corny mad scientist in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I'm with Kevin in that they almost made it out without any problems. Also it's important to note that the real concern was the hobbits, and Frodo in particular. They weren't going to be able to survive the mountain. Boromir says it and Gandalf knows it. That was Saruman's ploy. He knew the hobbits wouldn't be able to survive the mountain if he awoke it. Gandalf makes a decision at the bridge of Khazad-dûm to stay behind to fight the Balrog because Frodo surviving and the quest continuing was more important thank his continued involvement. Also the whip catching his leg was a fluke. He could have climbed back up and went with them, but it's likely he decided that this Balrog that has wings was too much of a threat and needed to be put down. If you look up the lore, Gandalf and Balrogs are actually the same level of being too. They are both Maiar, servants of the Valar, who are the gods who created Middle-Earth. Balrogs were Maiar who were corrupted by the first Dark Lord, Melkor (a former Valar who turns his back on his kin and wants to rule the world himself), and bent to his will. Sauron is also a Maiar who was corrupted by Melkor, as is Saruman. Much like in Greek and Roman mythology, where the gods retreat to their godly realm and don't directly interfere with their creation, the Valar do the same in Arda, which is all of creation in Tolkien's world, and includes the undying lands and elsewhere. Since Melkor has chosen more champions to imbue with more power, so the Valar chose Gandalf to imbue with more power and send back as a champion. Saruman was the leader of the Maiar and the eponymous white wizard. With him become Melkor's servant through serving Sauron, Gandalf is appointed as the new white wizard.

*SPOILERS: The borimir death scene is hands down the most emotional scene I've seen in movies, I've seen the movie about 6 times now and even though I always know what's coming I can't help but tear up. Borimir's just such a soldier trying to do the right thing in his heart but falls to greed like all men. In his final moments I could feel his guilt then acceptance that he did right in the end. Incredible movies that I doubt will be topped at least in my lifetime.

Actually they show Bill the Pony early on when they are leaving the shire after they catch Sam peeping on them from the bushes. Gandalf says "Ive thought of a better use for you..." It's kind of a sight gag where you can see Gandalf Frodo and Bill, but not Sam, so you assume Gandalf turned him into a pony (or at least I did!). Gandalf then says "Come on Samwise, keep up!" and Sam scampers into the frame a second later in the shot. I'm pretty sure in the book they do pick him up in Bree. They're right, they don't show Bill too often at all. The bigger problem is Gandalf's beard as they leave the Caradhras mountains and gives the speech to Frodo. All of a sudden he's got this dark black beard. No clue wtf happened. It's like they gave him the wrong beard. Stands out like a sore thumb to me!

Gandalf's sacrifice was such a major "a wizard did it" given how soft the magic system in LOTR is that it never really hit me emotionally. It's always been badass, but not much beyond that.

I usually hate recap-focused reviews, because they tend to meander and are almost always boring. That said, Nick does a FANTASTIC job, great humor, but the movie is always the centerpiece.

I was interested in listening to the audiobook on podcast service. Late last year I came across the LOTR Unofficial Unabridged Audiobook Soundscape Project by Phil Dragash on castbox. I think it was an enjoyable experience with the music and sound effects. Would normally listen while playing Forza Horizon 4. There are two versions on castbox User Vegeto TrSeven split by chapter, but book 3 isn't uploaded yet. User Bookforyou, each book is it's own single uninterrupted book
