Meteor Man must be Gandalf, the way they made him say “when in doubt, always follow your nose”, which is a direct reference. They’ve changed so much, they’ve probably just changed the time of his arrival. I think that the harfoot taking care of him and how close he gets with them, is a reason for the love he has for the hobbits later on.

It is him but it shouldn’t be. Gandalf has been on middle earth for far longer in the books “300 lives of men i’ve walked this earth and now I have no time!”. Granted, he says that at the end of the third age, but each age is what.. roughly 3000 years give or take? I believe an average lifespan of man in middle earth was what.. 80-100 years? So, one age would only be around 30 lives of men. Idk honestly.. they royally fucked up everything with this show.

I caught that as well, my only doubt is Amazon doesn't has the rights for anything from the 3rd age, so unless he will be used as a (Gandalf) without saying it, not sure how they will fit in, indeed is clever to use gandalf without using him, Maybe he could be a Blue Wizard and that sentence was shared to him? also the love for the Hobbitt,/Hardfoots? He could even be Saruman Before turning evil 😅.. well until season 2 hopefully

@@compass3309 you think amazon, who made the decision to invent harfoots to nostalgia bait people would bring any other wizard than Gandalf to keep the nostalgia flowing, to the story? Amazon who wrote halbrand to drop Sauron lines through all the episodes, and finally surprise surprise(not) he turns out to be Sauron, would heavily imply that the stranger is Gandalf(“always follow your nose”, moths, talk menacing and the background darkens and bending in like he did to bilbo in the shire) and not have it be Gandalf? All the rings were made by the Elves for the Elves. Originally the only separation was between the Three and the lesser 16. The 16 lesser Elf Rings of Power were forged over 300 years with Annatar (Lord of Gifts) assisting Celebrimbor and the Elven-Smiths. Celebrimbor and his people grew suspicious of Annatar, and given the opportunity once Annatar left the city they crafted the Three Great Rings by themselves for a total of 19 rings. Of course Annatar was Sauron and he was also going off to forge his own ring to highjack the others. With the One Ring the grand total was finally 20.When Sauron's plan to mind-control the Elves failed he launched a genocidal war on Eregion to steal the Rings, but Celebrimbor was able to get the Three out in time. Sauron captured the lesser 16 when he conquered the city, however he realized the Rings weren't going to work on the Elves anymore so he started passing them out to the Dwarves and Humans. The famous poem was actually written many centuries after these events, basically describing the state at the time, but would be a source of confusion for later generations on the order of events, which would manifest with the idea that the Rings were made for other races besides the Elves. The Rings of Power project was initially conceived to recreate the bliss, purity, and timelessness of Valinor upon Earth, so the Elves could preserve their civilization in this mortal world of decay. Morgoth's taint and corruption essentially made the world toxic to immortal beings in the long-term, leaving only the Blessed Realm of the Valar as a save pocket to live out the life of the universe, but Celebrimbor and his Elven-smiths weren't going to give up so quickly... which was exactly the gap in the armor Sauron was looking for to get some leverage on corrupting the Elves (and everyone else by default).

It seems to me that Amazon Studios is choosing to forgo the Third Age appearance of Gandalf and introduce him early. I'll bet that he arrives in Greenwood in the second season and that's where he'll meet with Galadriel since they have been friends for a very long time. They may not even give him the name "Gandalf" until the Third Age just to make it seem more in line with his Third Age introduction in the book.

The Fall of Numenor will definitely be a big moment. For one, Sauron actually gets them to sail against the Valinor, and that's when the Valar break the world, destroying the Numenorean army and completely engulfing the entire island. So there will be a big build up to that moment. I'm actually curious as to how they will play this. Is Halbrand going to be Sauron's fair form going forward? I'm not sure. I could see it going both ways. Sauron is supposed to just give up when the Numenoreans come against him again and he willingly goes to Numenor, where he slowly corrupts them. So, I could see that guise being Halbrand, but I could also see it being a different character. I had always thought of Annatar as being somewhat Elven in appearance, but now the show has set up an animosity already between the Elves and Numenoreans, so I am not sure how they want to play it. Clearly Isildur's sister is going to be the one who influences them to go back since she just found the Palantir, and presumably starts conversing with Sauron.

I really like the idea of The Stranger being one of the Blue Wizards, because Tolkien published very little concrete about them, and his ideas changed a lot over time whenever he talked about them privately in letters and such, so there's a lot of room for expanding the narrative, without conflicting with canon. Originally Tolkien suggested they failed in whatever their mission was, but later in life reconsidered that they were actually critical to disrupting Sauron's will and domination over the more distant lands. We do know one Blue Wizard's Maiarin name was Alatar, and he was affiliated with Oromë. I wonder if they're using the other though, who's even more of a blank slate. (As Charlie sort of touches on, all the Maiar are aligned with / in service of one of the Valar - Sauron/Mairon with Aulë, Gandalf/Olórin with Manwë, Radagast/Aiwendil with Yavanna, Saruman/Curumo also with Aulë.) The references around The Stranger to the butterfly constellation, stars, the sun and moon, etc., might be to imply that he's affiliated with Varda, which would be cool.

Keeping hold of it and that's why they're not as strongly influenced by it, they don't claim power, they don't want power, just fun and adventure, unlike every Human or Elf!! It didn't feel like Tolkien and was way too UNDER-produced in critical areas, as well as extremely OVER-produced in other areas. Too much unnecessary exposition. PLENTY of bad dialogue. Some good dialogue too though, not much. The season's entire plot (the actual plot) should've taken place in the first 2 episodes and then the last 6 episodes should've been Gandalf and Nori's adventure and Sauron's final descent into darkness. The show didn't make efficient use of its time. It is slow, boring, and badly paced. I liked that they made Sauron very three-dimensional and especially the fact that Galadriel was his last chance to cling to the light and she denied him that. They should've done more with this and made the potential love interest between Sauron and Galadriel more compelling so that we actually felt betrayed when he reveals himself to her and even MORE betrayed when we realize that Galadriel's decision is what forces Sauron to abandon the light for the final time. The ENTIRE Elendil/Isildur/Earien storylines should've been cut. Tar Palantir, Miriel, and Pharazon should've have remained bit parts, as they didn't effectively contribute to the ACTUAL plot. The Elrond/Durin storyline was probably the most compelling in the entire show but the need for it felt forced, as the entire Mithril/corruption/plague idea isn't compelling and seems affected or concocted. Overall, this was a 1/5.

The “butterflies” are moths… and Gandalf in the movies (LOTR and Hobbit) has multiple encounters with moths. I took the moth inclusion to mean that they were using meteor man as a younger Gandalf who they have maybe merged with blue wizard story and just brought him to ME in this age rather than the 3rd age. It makes way more sense with him being so embedded with Harfoots and Gandalf’s affinity for Hobbits. Like the Harfoots save him and show him who he is, teach him, it seems like an origin story to Gandalfs love of the Hobbits way more than Blue Wizards. From a film fan service and monetary perspective I think they’re more like to do this than to stick to the books too tightly- they already deviated in a lot of ways like Galadriel being fooled by Sauron and renaming him Halibrand. I dunno how you think it’s about fireworks.

Honestly, this wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Key moments were handled with more care, and the (entirely expected) revelation that Halbrand is Sauron helps to explain away some of the more egregious coincidences from earlier episodes (such as how Galadriel happened to run into that raft in the middle of nowhere and then happen upon a Numenorian vessel miles from anywhere, or how Halbrand mysteriously got that apparently life-threatening injury despite not being wounded in battle [which nobody questions], but was conveniently strong enough to ride all the way to the Elven city). He used Galadriel and engineered these situations to get close to Celebrimbor. Certainly a flawed series. My overall rating is 6/10.

To answer your Question: Anatar/Sauron (NOT Halbrand) did befriend with the Elves and seduced Celebrimbor into forging the Rings of Power. Over a long time Period first there were made the 7 Rings for the Dwarfs, then the 9 Rings for the Men. Those were forged by Anatar/Sauron and Celebribor together. When it was done, it was devealed that Anatar was Sauron and so Sauron did flee the realms of the Elves (Eregion). When Sauron was gone, Celebrimbor forged the 3 Elven Rings which where never corrupted in any way due the presence of Sauon. Thats was the reason They stod pure and Sauron had no Power over them. Not just got Amazone corrupt the pureness of the three Elven Rings by having Sauron touching both, the Dagger and the Mithril, but by having him being part of the whole proces. Another big Problem Amazone created is the fact, they totaly ignored the seven and especialy the nine Rings for the Men. While the seven Rings never were importatnd since the Dwarfs were just too stubborn and selfmindet to get corrupted by Sauron... without the nine Rings for Men, there will be no Nazguls / Ringwraiths. In the Lore of Tolkien it is an important fact, those Rings were forged by the Elves and Anatar in Eregion and only the ONE Ringe, the Master Ring is forged by Sauron allone at Mount Doom. But since completly ignore ALL of the Tolkien Lore and got literaly nothing right about what realy happend and WHY and WHEN it happend... you realy dont need to worry about such a litle thing like what does it mean, Sauron touched the Dagger and Mithril :)

Weren't the first 15-16 Great Rings made before the 3? I seem to recall from the books that Sauron helped Celebrimbor make those rings first, and then Sauron took them and gave them out, and THEN the 3 elven rings were made, and finally the One Ring by Sauron alone. I *think* we saw the original Great Rings when they made those plain bands early in the process, but there was no confirmation or discussion that it was so. Also, the show could have made it more clear that "Halbrands" advice on making the rings was what was going to enable him to control the wearers later on. Instead, they just sorta show him meandering around and pointing at things. I feel like that should have been foreshadowed at least a little bit.

The show changed the order slightly, so that the Elven rings are made first (for the survival of the Elves in Middle-earth). Halbrand managed to touch the mithril used in their creation and there was a brief hint of the Eye of Sauron when Elrond added it to the molten material of Galadriel's dagger. So that might be the connection for them. As for the other rings, those will likely be forged when Sauron will return to Eregion in Season 2 (possibly as Annatar as teased by the actor in his NYTimes interview).

The wizard is definitely Olorin, the amount of direct Lord of The Rings Gandalf references makes it fairly obvious. Whispering to insects, the Grey robes, the moth, the dark cloud when angry, tne line, " When in doubt always follow your nose" is straight from Gandalfs mouth in the Fellowship of The Ring.

Actualy the books make it pretty clear, that even if Sauron did not participate in the making of the rings, the one ring still is their superior. Sauron would eventually control the person who wears one of the three rings, as he would with all other rings of power. Therefor The elves decided not to wear them until Sauron was defeated! Factcheckers say: Not True. Sauron had no Power over the three Elven Rings. However, as soon as the Elves did USE their rings, it was imidiatly revealed to Sauron and also the Location of the Ring that was used got revealed. For their safety, the Elves did not use the Rings, to keep their Locations secret.

@@sailingsavage9787 well, then u didn’t read the silmarillion, I’m actually 100% positive, that Tolkien makes it very clear, that the one ring had the power to dominate the three elven rings… sorry, but of that I’m very sure! Read the book like 10 times.

In fact, that’s the main reason why they wouldn’t use the rings… fact check it again, I promise u, it literally says: even while Sauron did not partake in the making of the rings of Celebrimbor, the one ring still had the power to control them, and that’s why they couldn’t use them (paraphrasing here, I only read it in German haha)

The making of the rings was so rushed. I would have love to have seen a slow manipulation over time, and him appearing as an elf not a man. Him being sauron should have been revealed to the audience but not the characters. Where are the lesser rings? Why the rush?

I like the Mairon/Sauron duality & dichotomy connection to Samael/Lucifer as a fallen angel turning to evil.

Should be since Tolkien was a huge Catholic. Though I think he meant Melkor to be his Lucifer. Melkor = Arises in Might; Lucifer = Lightbringer. Morgoth = Black foe of the world; Satan/Devil = The enemy; accuser I’m not familiar with Samael, since I though the main fallen angels were Azazel and Samyaza

@@blackflagsnroses6013 I think Sauron/Marion is more of the lesser demons that appeared in the New Testament. It might also be a reference to Tolkien thinking that evil spawns evil as he was a prolific reader of Greek mythology and this something that happens all the time.

The fact that Gandalf is the stranger is some kind of bullshit like they for sure took the easy way out here. I wasn’t fully ok with the fact that a wizard was going to be in the show but would have been more or if it was a blue wizard as thats not been done. I kinda liked the ep but for me that was a massive let down and I wish they would stop playing it safe and leaning so heavily on the Lord of the Rings trilogy and playing of nostalgia like every reboot these days.
